iOS 16 Hands-On: Top 5 New Features! - YouTube
Channel: Marques Brownlee
[0]
so the newest version of iOS was
[1]
revealed by Apple about a month ago
[3]
which means sometime in the next few
[4]
months your iPhone's going to change
[7]
for the better luckily as long as you
[9]
have an iPhone 8 or later
[11]
this is iOS 16.
[20]
[Music]
[25]
so I've had the beta for iOS 16 on this
[28]
iPhone for about a month played around
[31]
with it a lot it's not stable enough to
[32]
make your main just yet just warning you
[34]
but there's a lot of good stuff here
[35]
some of which Apple did talk about on
[37]
stage some of which they didn't either
[39]
way this is the five best features in
[42]
iOS 16. so number five the ability to
[45]
edit and unsend messages so I realize
[48]
I've only been asking to do this on
[50]
Twitter but apparently people have
[51]
wanted this for iMessage too so now you
[54]
can long press the message you send and
[56]
for up to 15 minutes after you first
[57]
send something you can edit and then
[60]
type what you actually meant to send and
[62]
it'll revise to whoever you sent it to
[64]
or if you're just so disgusted with what
[66]
you originally sent you can actually
[68]
unsend a message completely which is
[70]
pretty sweet if you do either of these
[73]
things the other person will see that it
[75]
was edited but won't see the edit
[77]
history and if you undo send it just
[79]
leaves an alert in place for both people
[81]
by the way just as a heads up if you go
[82]
to try this feature with someone who
[85]
isn't on on iOS 16 yet it won't work so
[88]
they won't see the edit on their end or
[90]
the undo on their end so they'll still
[92]
see the crazy terrible message you
[95]
initially sent uh you've been warned but
[97]
that brings us to number four which is
[99]
live objects now I think I gotta just
[101]
sort of rewind just a little bit so you
[103]
can understand or at least fully
[104]
appreciate how amazing this is so you
[106]
remember live text right live text lets
[109]
you open any picture with text in it and
[111]
it immediately recognizes that text and
[113]
lets you interact with it lets you copy
[115]
paste it somewhere Etc iOS 16 also adds
[118]
live text in videos so if you pause a
[120]
video on a frame with text somewhere in
[122]
it you can lift that text from inside
[124]
the video that way but the cherry on top
[127]
is now in a photo with a subject and a
[131]
background you can long press and
[133]
literally lift any object out of a photo
[136]
to copy and paste into whatever you want
[139]
messages for example so it erases the
[142]
background does all the masking for you
[144]
and does a surprise amazingly good job
[146]
for a literal one second background
[149]
delete you can do this with seemingly
[151]
any photo too it's not just like
[152]
portrait mode photos shot on the iPhone
[154]
it can be shot on any camera as a matter
[156]
of fact any picture it just seems to
[158]
need to have a reasonable subject versus
[161]
background and the iPhone will just
[163]
figure it out I am very impressed I'll
[165]
be making all kinds of stickers for our
[167]
Discord now so then number three for me
[169]
is
[170]
the little things just all the little
[172]
things added up together this is one of
[174]
those things where like iOS still looks
[176]
and feels like iOS it's not that
[178]
dramatic of an overhaul but when you add
[180]
together all these small things it does
[182]
feel like a pretty nice refresh and I I
[184]
like pretty much all the things I
[186]
changed I like that the weather app
[187]
finally shows you individual daytime
[190]
forecasts now it's crazy that it took
[192]
them buying dark sky to finally
[194]
Implement all this but now for one day
[196]
you can see how the temperature will
[198]
move and fluctuate throughout the day or
[200]
when it will rain Etc love it I like the
[202]
new video watching UI if you choose to
[204]
watch a video in Safari now clean simple
[207]
I like that face ID Works in landscape
[210]
now it's a small touch but finally thank
[213]
you I like that the home screen says
[215]
search at the bottom where you can pull
[217]
up a slightly refreshed Spotlight search
[220]
UI pops up from the bottom now and I use
[222]
Spotlight all the time so I notice this
[224]
right away and I like that the things
[226]
you order with the Apple card will start
[228]
showing up in the wallet app it's self
[230]
so if you keep track of everything there
[232]
then rip to some package tracking apps
[235]
and I know a lot of people that will
[236]
like the iPhone finally has a haptic
[240]
keyboard
[241]
is one of those things that Android has
[242]
had for
[243]
so many years a decade at this point
[245]
probably since the beginning but it's
[247]
funny because it's one of those things
[248]
that immediately lets me feel when a
[251]
phone has a good haptic engine or not
[253]
because first thing you do is type in a
[255]
Wi-Fi password and you can feel the
[256]
haptic keyboard and it's either a soft
[258]
mushy haptics or really tight and clicky
[262]
the good ones I leave it on the bad ones
[264]
I'll turn it off so the iPhone literally
[266]
has the best vibration motor on any
[268]
phone so it's about damn time the
[270]
keyboard gets the haptic feedback and
[272]
it's very good it's off by default but
[274]
you can easily hop into settings and
[276]
turn it on so there's always a bunch of
[278]
little things with software updates that
[280]
sort of add up to a bigger change and I
[282]
kind of like all these they're really
[283]
good but now it's time for the bigger
[285]
things so number two is continuity
[288]
camera this one
[290]
might be my personal favorite but it's
[293]
the one I got the biggest announcement
[294]
reaction on stage and it was the biggest
[297]
shocker so it's super cool so basically
[298]
over the years our smartphone cameras
[300]
have gotten better and better but
[301]
webcams in laptops not so much I mean it
[306]
was only the M1 MacBooks in 2020 where
[308]
Apple finally updated to a 1080p webcam
[311]
but it still looks worse than a normal
[313]
phone camera so Apple had this brilliant
[314]
idea why don't we use the good cameras
[317]
that we make which are the iPhone
[318]
cameras as your webcam
[321]
genius so you've got to have IOS 16 and
[324]
the latest version of Mac OS Ventura to
[326]
do it but once you've got all that going
[328]
continuity camera wirelessly turns your
[330]
iPhone into your Macs webcam so doing
[334]
that not only looks infinitely better
[336]
but also gives you access to all the
[338]
other cool things that your iPhone's
[339]
camera can do like portrait mode Studio
[342]
light and Center Stage if you want it's
[344]
pretty sick but easily the coolest part
[346]
of this is called desk view so by using
[349]
your phone's Ultra wide camera when it's
[351]
mounted on top of your laptop or your
[352]
monitor you can get your standard webcam
[354]
View and this top down view of
[357]
whatever's on your desk in front of you
[359]
so in this case it's basically showing
[361]
what's right in front of your keyboard
[362]
where your hands are at anything that's
[364]
pretty flat to the ground it seems like
[366]
black magic but it works pretty well
[369]
that's a lot of software processing
[371]
going on to take the edge of the ultra
[373]
wide frame and flip it upside down and
[375]
turn it into this perfect top-down view
[377]
but I can see this being crazy useful in
[380]
so many circumstances as long as
[381]
whatever object you're working with is
[383]
pretty flat so that is dope and that
[385]
brings us to number one which is the new
[388]
lock screen this is the biggest visual
[390]
most obvious change to iOS it's got the
[393]
most new stuff here and it's just all
[395]
the customization of the clock and the
[398]
wallpaper and all the stuff going on so
[400]
let's just jump right in so first things
[402]
first the lock screen looks different
[403]
right away new clock font matching
[406]
colors some widgets so to start
[408]
customizing your lock screen you just
[410]
hold it down and then hit the customize
[412]
button and then just tap what you want
[414]
to start to customize so you can mess
[416]
with the font and the color of course to
[418]
get the contrast right so things are
[419]
readable and then up above the clock and
[422]
below the clock you have slots to add
[424]
widgets you can see I already have a few
[426]
here and it's kind of like adding them
[428]
to your home screen you just pick the
[429]
one you want to add tap it or click to
[432]
drag it in and the widgets below the
[434]
clock are very much just like watch
[436]
complications they're these little
[438]
square glanceable pieces of information
[440]
that you can't really interact much with
[442]
but when you click them they open the
[444]
app that they're associated with and the
[447]
ones above the clock are mainly just a
[449]
text format so they make a lot of sense
[451]
for maybe calendar events or weather
[453]
things like that so you can already play
[455]
around endlessly with just that
[457]
combination of things you can mess with
[458]
the clock the weather the widgets
[460]
whatever else you want to put in there
[461]
but then what's nice is you can save
[463]
your layout what you've made and then go
[467]
to create a new one so now you can save
[469]
multiple different lock screens that
[471]
you've customized and set up and just
[473]
like watch faces on the Apple watch you
[475]
can just hold it down and switch between
[477]
any of these ones you've made at any
[479]
time but now here's an extra wrench to
[480]
throw into this whole equation if you
[482]
don't add any bottom widgets so if you
[485]
just have your clock and maybe a top
[487]
widget there's a new feature where the
[489]
clock will Nestle itself between the
[492]
foreground and the background of your
[494]
wallpaper and this was not just for like
[497]
portrait mode photos or photos from the
[499]
iPhone this is any photo so Apple's
[501]
using a little bit more of their AI
[502]
their impressive object recognition from
[505]
that live objects feature earlier and
[507]
it's able to with pretty impressive
[509]
consistency give me some pretty cool
[511]
cutouts it's really too bad it doesn't
[513]
work once you add widgets under the time
[514]
at least in this beta so you have to
[516]
choose between a cool clock cut out and
[519]
lots of widgets on your home screen but
[521]
I think this feature is pretty sweet
[523]
when it works and I am also a fan of
[525]
this little animation you're seeing
[526]
where when you unlock it fades in the
[528]
foreground just before it fades in the
[529]
background from black it's a nice touch
[531]
now to take this even further you can
[533]
associate any lock screen that you make
[535]
with a focus mode so if you have a focus
[538]
mode like for work for example you could
[540]
already do a certain home screen for
[542]
work now you can have a certain lock
[543]
screen for work then you can have a home
[546]
and lock screen for going to sleep going
[548]
to the gym going home whatever all that
[551]
stuff just ties and switches
[552]
automatically and then also now that
[554]
your lock screen is so much prettier the
[556]
notifications roll in and they don't
[558]
cover your Masterpiece anymore they roll
[560]
in from the bottom so I really like that
[562]
change it's good for reachability on
[564]
phones of all screen sizes but also just
[566]
seems to make chronological sense the
[568]
way they've been rolling in and they
[570]
keep rolling in from the bottom without
[571]
interrupting your precious lock screen
[573]
you can choose to display notifications
[575]
as a stack a list or account in the past
[578]
they'd always been a list that's what
[580]
we're used to but I like them as a stack
[581]
now it's more Compact and another cool
[583]
feature Apple added is called live
[585]
activities this is basically an app that
[588]
will update its notification live with
[590]
new information instead of sending you
[592]
new notifications over and over again so
[594]
something like when your Uber is getting
[596]
closer and closer to you before it picks
[598]
you up or maybe live sports scores just
[600]
update to scoreboard I really like the
[602]
new music live activity it's much
[604]
smaller than the huge widget was before
[606]
and you can still script through songs
[607]
it's great and also the new live timer
[610]
notifications pretty sweet just having
[612]
that little animation to count down the
[614]
seconds just a good amount of Polish
[616]
here on the lock screen and I think
[618]
that's really the highlight of iOS 16 is
[620]
just people we're going to be out here
[622]
customizing their lock screens doing
[623]
crazy stuff with the way they that's the
[626]
thing that you interact with the most on
[628]
your phone how many times do you think
[630]
maybe a hundred times a day you unlock
[631]
your phone and look at the wallpaper and
[633]
your lock screen it's a big deal so
[635]
that's pretty much it for iOS 16 let me
[638]
know what your favorite feature is in
[640]
the comments below and I'll talk to you
[642]
guys in the next one
[643]
peace
[646]
thank you
