After you’ve made up your mind to join a top MBA program, the first big step would
[4]
be to get a high GMAT score.
[5]
In this video, we’ll touch upon all the basic information you need to know about this
[9]
important but feared test.
[21]
The full form of GMAT is Graduate Management Admission Test.
[23]
It’s a Computer Adaptive Test, which means the level of difficulty for each question
[28]
you get, will be influenced by how you’ve performed on the previous questions.
[32]
GMAT scores are valid for 5 years.
[35]
The fee is 250 US dollars.
[37]
You can take the test 5 times in a year.
[40]
And 8 times in your lifetime.
[41]
GMAT scores are accepted by a large number of universities for their MBA, MiM and other
[46]
management related programs.
[48]
It’s important to perform well on the test, because a high score can - not only get you
[52]
into your dream program, but also increase the odds of getting a scholarship.
[56]
Some top consulting firms and investment banks also use GMAT scores to filter out candidates
[61]
for their recruitment process.
[62]
Another reason to take it seriously.
[67]
There are four sections in the new GMAT exam.
[69]
• Analytical Writing Assessment In the AWA section, you’ll have to figure
[72]
out the reasoning behind an argument and write a critique of the same, with the relevant
[76]
examples and explanation
[77]
• Integrated Reasoning (IR) Section Integrated Reasoning is designed to test your
[80]
analytical skills to solve a complicated problem.
[83]
You are provided with data in various forms.
[86]
Your skill depends on being able to handle the data, pick out the information that is
[90]
relevant and then choose the right answer.
[92]
• Quantitative Section The questions in the quantitative section
[95]
are designed to put your math skills to test.
[97]
They revolve around basic arithmetic, algebra and geometry.
[101]
• Verbal Section In Reading Comprehension, you are given a
[106]
passage on a topic and multiple choice questions based on the same.
[110]
In Critical Reasoning, you’ll have to identify the key points that influence, strengthen
[115]
or weaken the given argument.
[117]
In Sentence Correction, you are given a sentence with an underlined portion that you’ll have
[120]
to evaluate, and rectify if it is incorrect.
[123]
You’ll have a little over three hours to complete these four sections.
[127]
This excludes the 2 optional 8-minute breaks.
[130]
The total score out of 800 is only for the verbal and quantitative sections.
[135]
The remaining two sections receive their independent scores.
[139]
Following are some of the GMAT syllabus topics you can expect in the quantitative section:
[144]
• Integers • Decimals
[145]
• Fractions • Number properties
[147]
• Order of operations • Percentage
[150]
• Ratio and proportion • Profit and loss
[154]
• Simple and compound interest • Speed, distance and time
[159]
• Permutation & combination • Linear equations
[161]
• Quadratic equations • Sets Theory
[164]

[168]

[175]

[176]

[177]

[181]
The GMAT syllabus for the verbal section includes basic grammar rules.
[220]
This should give you an idea of the average GMAT scores for the top MBA programs across the world.
[369]
There are more than 600 test centers across the world where you can take the test.
[373]
As the first step you’ll have to identify the closest test center and register your
[377]
details along with a date and time.
[380]
Many test takers delay it till a few months before the application deadlines.
[383]
That’s a bad idea.
[385]
To be on the comfortable side, take it at least 1 year before your application date.
[389]
That way you have enough time to retake it, if needed.
[392]
While the obvious fact is a high GMAT score can make a big impact on your application,
[396]
here are some not-so-obvious facts.
[398]
A perfect 800 score does not guarantee an admit.
[402]
Over the years, elite schools like Harvard, Stanford and Wharton have rejected perfect
[405]
scorers.
[406]
And the silver lining is that a lower-than-average GMAT score doesn’t automatically get you
[411]
rejected.
[412]
On the MBA Crystal Ball blog, you’ll find many stories of low GMAT scorers who’ve
[415]
found ways to overcome this hurdle and get into their target programs.
[419]
How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?
[422]
We’ve come across candidates who’ve cracked the test with less than a week’s preparation.
[426]
We also come across those who really struggle with it for months, and in fact, years.
[430]
If you follow a good, structured study plan, the typical duration can be around 3 months.
[434]
Of course, a lot will depend on how fast you can brush up on the basics and how you prepare
[438]
for the test.
