yeah and uh you can still actually see
[3]
the dents in the playground wall and
[5]
that's when i knew i always wanted to be
[8]
a dentist
[10]
but uh tell me what do you do
[13]
oh well i'm i'm actually an operations
[16]
manager
[17]
i work for widget code
[21]
sounds sounds good um
[27]
oh look ice free cocktails
[31]
hi there i'm laurence gartside i'm a
[33]
management trainer and consultant in
[35]
business operations
[37]
helping you to level up you and your
[40]
team's
[40]
business operations fundamentals so
[44]
how about a career where you can
[46]
generate blank
[48]
confused looks wherever you go whilst
[51]
simultaneously taking responsibility for
[54]
some of the most
[55]
fundamental aspects of basically any
[58]
organization
[60]
well then it seems that being an
[62]
operations manager
[64]
really might be for you but
[67]
what is it that they do and how can it
[69]
be
[70]
so important to so many different
[73]
industries even ones that don't even use
[76]
the word
[77]
operations
[80]
operations is one of the main functions
[84]
or departments you could say of almost
[86]
any organization
[88]
it's the core daily activities that
[90]
create and deliver value
[92]
to customers operations has to work
[95]
closely with the other business
[97]
functions
[98]
such as customer support finance or
[101]
marketing
[102]
but it's the operations where the real
[104]
doing
[105]
gets done i've got separate intro videos
[108]
on
[109]
what business operations is and what
[111]
operations management is in general
[114]
but in this video we're really looking
[116]
at the actual role
[117]
of the operations manager the core
[120]
essentials across a huge range of types
[123]
and industries
[124]
and also some of the other names of jobs
[127]
used for what is again at its core
[130]
an operations manager basically
[133]
everything you buy has come to you
[135]
via operations managers your chair
[139]
your computer your internet service your
[142]
hospital treatment your big mac the it
[146]
phone support center the water coming
[148]
out of your tap
[149]
the amazon package you got delivered
[152]
everything
[153]
every one of these products and services
[156]
was created
[157]
and delivered under the design planning
[159]
and supervision
[160]
of operations managers operations
[163]
managers are responsible for the
[165]
designing
[166]
delivering developing and directing
[169]
the operations of an organization
[172]
designing the operations means what
[175]
processes
[176]
should be used planning how much space
[179]
equipment labor
[180]
energy and materials will be required
[182]
what
[183]
layout what skills how should the people
[186]
and equipment be organized and interact
[189]
with each other
[190]
operations managers would be integral to
[193]
the
[193]
design of a factory a hospital an
[196]
airport or a new
[198]
fast food restaurant each of these are
[200]
the operational core
[202]
of giant organizations with vast amounts
[205]
of
[205]
repetitive inputs being transformed
[208]
through a set of processes to produce a
[211]
flow of
[212]
higher value outputs and the design of
[215]
these systems
[216]
both the physical and the organizational
[219]
aspects
[220]
are absolutely integral to their
[222]
abilities
[223]
and success delivering means
[226]
the planning and controlling of the
[228]
ongoing operations
[231]
factories are not run by machines
[234]
airports are not run by pilots and in
[237]
hospitals
[238]
doctors have an essential but only
[241]
partial role and expertise in the huge
[244]
daily management of running the daily
[246]
activities
[247]
of the organization for some doctors a
[250]
big part of their role is
[252]
operations manager far far away and
[255]
totally different from any
[257]
surgical operations developing
[260]
is about continuous improvement however
[264]
well-designed the systems are there is
[266]
always opportunity for
[268]
improvements and also external changes
[271]
to the business environment
[273]
new customer demands or new technology
[276]
to be considered
[277]
and incorporated finally operations
[280]
managers are responsible
[282]
for directing the operations
[285]
this is the medium term higher level
[288]
management of the activities and
[290]
processes
[291]
away from the hourly daily issues but
[294]
much closer in than back when things
[297]
were first
[297]
being designed and set up we need
[301]
active steering from our operations
[303]
managers
[304]
reviewing performance data trends and
[306]
changes
[307]
reviewing forecasts and upcoming threats
[311]
to supply
[312]
reallocation changes of resources or
[315]
new scheduling rules to take advantage
[318]
of
[318]
situational changes or strategy
[321]
refinements
[322]
operations managers come with many
[325]
different job titles
[327]
often where the job role is part
[329]
operations manager
[330]
and part something else like head
[334]
chef in the restaurant the chief
[337]
engineer department manager line
[340]
supervisor a military captain or
[343]
head of software development whilst
[346]
their job titles can be specific to
[349]
their industry
[350]
a big part of each of these roles is
[353]
operations manager
[355]
very often people get promoted into a
[358]
senior role with
[359]
people and operations management
[361]
responsibilities because they were
[363]
a very good engineer software programmer
[366]
doctor or
[367]
salesman but now find their role is
[370]
very little to do with them doing their
[373]
old job
[374]
but now rather more about the systems
[377]
they manage
[378]
the resources they coordinate work they
[381]
schedule and so on
[383]
operations management is the practical
[386]
discipline
[386]
built on over a century of accumulated
[389]
knowledge and experience from
[391]
a thousand different industries all
[394]
sharing
[395]
so many of the same fundamental
[397]
challenges
[399]
cheesy catchphrase alert operations
[402]
managers may not always grab the
[404]
headlines and run the world
[406]
but they do make the world run
