[2]
You've got your idea, and you've got your ambition.
[5]
The question is, what do you do next?
[8]
In this video, I'm going to tell you the four steps that you need to take
[11]
if you want to become a successful intrapreneur.
[14]
*Upbeat music*
[18]
Hello, and welcome back to my channel where I help you slay your career
[21]
and cultivate the success in life you deserve.
[23]
You've decided to become an intrapreneur.
[25]
And now what you need is the steps that it takes to get the ball rolling,
[30]
and most importantly, the steps that it takes to be successful. Now let's get right into it.
[34]
The first thing that you need is a plan.
[37]
Yes, in order to become an intrapreneur, you need to have an idea, and that's all well and great.
[43]
But without a plan, your idea is simply just like that - an idea.
[48]
It doesn't need to be some crazy color coded thing, and it doesn't require any Gantt charts.
[53]
Although I must admit, I am a fan of a good Gantt chart.
[57]
What you need at this stage is a rough map of how you're actually going to bring that
[61]
idea into reality. It has the obvious benefit of helping you achieve buy in from
[66]
whoever you need buy in from need to work with other teams, this is going to help show
[70]
them what's going to happen you buy in from your manager,
[72]
this is going to demonstrate what you're about to do.
[74]
The biggest win in terms of actually developing a plan before you go head on
[79]
to an idea without one is that it's actually going to help crystallize the vision for you.
[84]
It's going to help you approach your innovation from a tactical perspective,
[88]
so that the intrapreneurial initiative is going to go much smoother and much closer
[93]
to a plan because the plan exists.
[96]
Do you already have your idea and your plan?

[101]
The second step is determining the type of intrapreneur program that's actually available to you for this project and at your company.
[108]
Now, if you're at a big company, there may be a formal intrapreneurial program,
[113]
like we talked about in our examples video.
[115]
In fact, that there may even be an entire job that is dedicated to intrapreneurship.
[121]
But if you're at a smaller company, it's probably something that is less formal,
[125]
and might actually even be an expectation of you in your day to day role.
[129]
So what you need to do is figure out which one is actually available and which
[132]
one is a better fit. If it's something that requires 100%, dedication, resources, budget,
[138]
figure out if there's a formal program,
[140]
but most intrapreneurs are tackling their initiative as a side hustle to their core role.
[146]
What does that mean? It means that whether you have a formal program or informal program,
[151]
you're welcome and invited to pursue projects that are going to improve the overall well being
[157]
of your company and help you to grow without any red tape.
[161]
Now, if you have a formal program, and you do need to participate for any intrapreneurial projects
[166]
that you take on, you need to find the right people to talk to to figure out the application process
[171]
and how you actually get approvals. Now, it's going to be a lot easier if you can go the informal route.
[176]
Either way, you're now going to move into step three, which is getting buying and approvals.
[181]
If it's a formal process in order to get sign off your intrapreneurial project this is kind of obvious.
[187]
But even in an informal setting, there may be times where you're actually required to get an approval.
[192]
For example, if your project or initiative involves any sort of budget, and you don't actually
[198]
own any budgetat yourself at your company, you're probably you need someone else to sign off.
[203]
Same goes if there is going to be any investment of time that is going to impact maybe
[207]
KPIs for your team, you're probably going to need some sign off in order to do that.
[211]
Similarly, if there is a cross functional collaboration that is required, in order to
[216]
put your initiative to life, it's likely that you're going to have to at least talk to the people not
[220]
only on the team that are going to be helping you.
[223]
But it's even possible that you're going to be pitching to the leadership of that team as well.
[227]
Now, here's where it can get a little bit complicated.
[231]
Depending on your manager, in most cases, the first person that you're going to talk to you,
[235]
whether you're going through a formal program, or an informal process is going to be
[239]
your manager. Ideally your manager is going to help get you the support that you need,
[244]
they're going to give you guidance. And they can be really instrumental to the success of
[249]
your intrapreneurial initiative not only in the support that they directly give,
[253]
but in the indirect support they're able to give.
[256]
However, that's on the assumption that you have a good manager -
[259]
or at least on a manager who is low key threatened by your talent and potential.
[263]
Now, if this is the case, at some point, they're still going to need to know.
[267]
And this is where it actually is really challenging. Because I can't actually give you the steps
[272]
to take if you have a manager who isn't supportive in this video, the thing is what you are
[276]
going to do in order to proceed with your initiative and still frame it for success.
[281]
It's really going to depend on your company, as well as your manager and your unique relationship
[285]
with them. You're interested in a video on difficult or bad bosses?
[291]
Let me know in the comments down below, because I'm happy to make that one.
[294]
And that actually leads me to a question because I know a lot of you that have been
[298]
watching are already intrapreneurial, or have been an intrapreneur in a prior life and have
[302]
made the transition into entrepreneurship. I'm curious, did you actually get the sign off
[307]
from your manager before you actually started working on your intrapreneurial initiative?
[311]
The fourth step is going to be marketing your success, even in the earliest stages of
[316]
your intrapreneurial pursuit. You want to be marketing the accomplishments and
[321]
the milestones that you've already had. Why is this important?
[324]
Well, because as soon as something shows potential of being successful,
[329]
other people automatically want to attach their names to it.
[332]
That means that you're going to get better support from your leadership,
[336]
as well as better buying and collaboration from the teams
[339]
that you want to partner with in order to bring it to life.
[342]
Intrapreneurship is going to up level your career.
[345]
By collaborating with others, you're actually giving them the opportunity to uplevel their careers as well.
[350]
And aside from getting better support throughout the lifecycle of your project or initiative,
[355]
let's just face it, like a tree falling in the woods where no one can hear it,
[359]
success without anyone being aware of it, isn't really going to have the impact that you want it to.
[365]
Let's face it, you're going to have to market your initiative at some point or another
[369]
because making an impact that no one knows about, isn't really the result that you're
[373]
hoping to achieve in becoming an intrapreneur. And I know that this is the hardest step
[378]
for so many people, especially if you're a woman and you're facing a double bind
[381]
when it comes to self promotion, it can feel like you're
[384]
being asked to eat a week old Subway sandwich in order to get ahead.
[387]
It's just not desirable and it doesn't make you feel good.
[390]
Owning your success and getting the recognition that you deserve doesn't have to be icky
[394]
and it doesn't have to give you food poisoning (like that sandwich).
[397]
There is a way to do it that is actually going to be authentic and organic for you and
[401]
that's one of the things that I actually cover in detail in my free masterclass the
[405]
five secrets to get promoted. If you're interested in checking it out to figure out how you
[409]
can actually self promote without self promoting it all go ahead and
[413]
register you can watch on demand at masterclass.capdecasolutions.com.
[417]
And that leaves me with my final question to you today...
[420]
What's your motivation and becoming an intrapreneur?
[422]
Are you trying to get a promotion? Do you just want to have an impact in your career?
[426]
Are you just kind of bored and want a new challenge?
[429]
I'm really curious to hear what your motivation is.
