NFT Mania - Hype Or A New Paradigm? CryptoPunks, BAYC, Generative Art, Loot Explained - YouTube

Channel: Finematics

[0]
nfts are clearly one of the hottest
[1]
topics in crypto at the moment crypto
[4]
banks autoglyphs board apes pudgy
[6]
penguins some of them selling for
[8]
hundreds of thousands or even millions
[10]
of dollars so rnft is just a hype or a
[13]
paradigm change what are some of the
[15]
most interesting nfts out there and what
[17]
are the biggest challenges of this new
[19]
space you'll find answers to these
[21]
questions in this video
[23]
before we begin if you want to learn
[24]
more about decentralized finance and the
[26]
technology behind it make sure you

[37]
let's start with a quick recap of what
[39]
nfts are in the first place
[41]
an nft or a non-fungible token is a way
[44]
of representing ownership in the digital
[47]
world
[47]
since the dawn of our civilization
[50]
humans have been collecting rare items
[52]
from seashells and gems to coins post
[55]
stamps and pokemon cards nfts are just
[58]
digital versions of that
[60]
collectibles pieces of art game items
[63]
domain names and even complex bespoke
[66]
financial instruments all of these can
[68]
be represented as nfts in contrast to
[71]
cryptocurrencies like bitcoin or ether
[73]
where each unit is interchangeable nfts
[76]
are unique at least in most cases the
[79]
creator of an nft project can decide on
[81]
the exact parameters of their nfts some
[84]
of the common examples are
[86]
only one nft per unique piece of art
[88]
artists that create individual pieces
[91]
like people follow this approach a
[93]
collection where each item has a unique
[95]
combination of different traits crypto
[97]
punks board apes a collection where
[100]
there is a set number of the same item
[102]
in the collection usually used for card
[105]
collectibles like my curio cards
[108]
the scarcity of individual nfts can be
[110]
verified on the blockchain where the
[112]
project was created for example we can
[114]
tell with 100 certainty that there were
[117]
only 10 000 original crypto banks
[120]
created on ethereum the authenticity of
[123]
nfts can also be instantly verified by
[125]
checking that the nft we own was created
[128]
using the original smart contract of a
[130]
particular project the blockchain also
[133]
provides a quick way of checking the
[135]
provenance of each individual nft which
[137]
is basically the history of its
[139]
ownership if you'd like to dive a bit
[141]
deeper into the technical aspects of
[143]
nfts and learn for example what
[145]
fungibility is or what different nft
[147]
standards like erc721
[150]
and
[151]
erc-1155 are you can check out my
[153]
previous video about nfts here now let's
[156]
go through some of the most popular nft
[158]
projects out there we couldn't start
[160]
this with anything other than crypto
[162]
punks crypto punks very often called
[164]
just punks are one of the oldest and one
[167]
of the most significant nfts the project
[169]
that was pretty much forgotten about
[171]
during the depth of the
[173]
2018-2019 bear market resurfaced at the
[176]
end of 2020 and took the world by storm
[179]
cryptopunx launched in june 2017 by
[182]
larval labs a two-person team was one of
[184]
the first nft projects presented as a
[187]
collection of similar items where the
[189]
uniqueness of each item was achieved by
[191]
having a distinctive combination of
[193]
different traits such as hats sunglasses
[196]
and hairstyles each punk is a unique
[199]
algorithmically generated 24 by 24 pixel
[202]
art image
[203]
in 2021 it's crazy to think that crypto
[206]
punks now worth around 350 000 for the
[210]
cheapest one were once claimable for
[212]
free and users were able to mint them by
[215]
paying a few dollars for an ethereum
[217]
transaction
[218]
crypto punks initially started gaining
[220]
popularity within the crypto community
[222]
itself but this quickly expanded to the
[224]
outside world with famous artists and
[226]
celebrities joining the bandwagon jay-z
[230]
othello beckham jr steve awoke to name
[233]
just a few in may 2021 a collection of
[236]
nine punks was sold at christie's one of
[238]
the most famous auction houses for a
[240]
whopping 16.9 million dollars another
[244]
prominent auction house sodebees sold a
[246]
rare alien bank for an astonishing 11.8
[250]
million dollars in june
[252]
in august 2021 visa announced a purchase
[255]
of a crypto punk as an addition to their
[257]
collection focus on historically
[259]
significant items in commerce this
[262]
basically skyrocketed the floor price
[264]
for a punk which is the lowest amount
[266]
that someone is willing to sell a punk
[268]
for from around one hundred thousand
[270]
dollars to as much as four hundred
[272]
thousand dollars crypto punks are
[274]
clearly one of the most significant nfts
[276]
and are very often referred to as the
[278]
holy grail for any nft collector punks
[282]
also initiated another phenomenon the
[284]
pfp mania pfp which stands for profile
[288]
picture is a type of nft that is
[290]
suitable for an online avatar punk
[292]
owners including the previously
[294]
mentioned celebrities started using
[296]
panks as their profile pictures on
[298]
twitter this quickly led to the creation
[300]
of new pfp-focused nft projects as
[302]
people who were already priced out of
[304]
punks started searching for something
[306]
more affordable the launch of multiple
[308]
pfp pfp-focused projects ignited the pfp
[311]
mania with people changing their profile
[313]
pictures to nfts on twitter discord
[316]
telegram or even linkedin
[319]
one of the earliest projects that
[320]
benefited from the pfp phenomenon was
[323]
bored apes yacht club often just called
[325]
board apes or bayc
[328]
board apes created in april 2021 by hugo
[331]
labs launched a 10 000 element nft
[333]
collection featuring high resolution
[335]
image art of apes with different traits
[338]
from common apes with normal fur and
[340]
beanies to extremely rare ones with
[342]
golden skin and crowns yacht club in the
[345]
name wasn't chosen by accident as each
[348]
nft from the collection acts like a
[350]
membership card and grants access to
[352]
member-only benefits one of them being a
[354]
merge shop board apes initially sold by
[357]
hugo labs for 0.08 eth are now trading
[360]
in the range of 48 for the cheapest ones
[363]
bayc is a good example of a project that
[366]
created a strong community of nft
[368]
holders
[369]
similarly to crypto banks board apes
[371]
will be featured in one of the upcoming
[373]
christies and saw the bees auctions
[375]
the pfp mania also resulted in the
[377]
creation of multiple other pfp nft
[380]
projects most of them were just low
[382]
effort clones of one of the popular
[384]
projects but there were also exceptions
[386]
some of them include cool cat nfts
[389]
featuring a collection of blue cats with
[391]
different features was created by an
[393]
artist drawing the same blue cat for
[396]
over 10 years
[397]
pudgy penguins also gained a lot of
[399]
traction and were even featured in the
[401]
new york times their main feature they
[404]
are super cute
[405]
world of women a collection featuring
[407]
unique cool and diverse women was
[409]
created with the aim of bringing more
[411]
diversity and representation into the
[413]
nft space besides completing new nfts
[417]
the teams behind already successful
[419]
projects can decide to launch new
[420]
collections very often inspired by their
[423]
original work the two most prominent
[425]
examples are mibits released by the
[428]
creators of crypto punks and mutant apes
[430]
released by the creators of board aims
[433]
this approach allows for expanding the
[435]
existing communities and including
[437]
people who might have been priced out of
[438]
the original collections although pfps
[441]
seem to be the main focus of the nft
[443]
community let's not forget about other
[445]
super interesting niches within the nft
[447]
space one of which is generative art
[451]
generative art lies at the intersection
[453]
of art and code artists instead of
[456]
drawing pieces of art by themselves
[458]
write an algorithm that generates the
[460]
art the art is always generated at the
[462]
time of minting a new nft and uses an
[465]
input parameter such as a transaction
[467]
hash that will be forever associated
[470]
with this particular token this allows
[472]
the users to feel like they are taking
[474]
part in the art creation as two
[476]
different users meaning a piece of art
[478]
from the same collection would end up
[480]
with different results autoglyphs are a
[483]
prime example of generative art the
[485]
collection of 512 items also created by
[488]
larval apps was generated purely on
[490]
chain this was possible as the art is
[493]
created out of basic ascii characters
[495]
that can be displayed as a result of
[497]
executing the autoglyph smart contract
[500]
itself
[501]
at the time of creation each autoglyph
[503]
had a different probability for drawing
[505]
certain patterns hence some pieces are
[508]
more rare than others at the time of
[510]
making this video the cheapest
[511]
autoglyphs are listed for 475
[514]
eth which is worth around 1.8 million
[517]
dollars other extremely popular pieces
[520]
of generative art come from art blocks
[523]
the art features on the artblock
[524]
platform is created using a script
[526]
written in a programming language called
[529]
5pjs each collection has its own script
[532]
that is stored on the ethereum
[534]
blockchain a program written in 5pjs can
[537]
generate different shapes with different
[539]
organizations textures or colors
[542]
depending what the creator wants to
[544]
achieve
[544]
art blocks curated is the most
[546]
prestigious collection with the most
[548]
sought-after pieces of generative art
[551]
such as ringer by dmitry cherniak and
[554]
videnza by tyler hobbs the most
[556]
expensive hidenza sold for 1000 eath
[559]
worth 3.3 million dollars at the time of
[562]
purchase in august 2021 generative art
[565]
explores an interesting concept of
[567]
artists becoming coders or maybe coders
[570]
becoming artists what happens if a
[573]
generative algorithm could be created
[575]
without any human help sounds quite
[577]
sci-fi for now but i wouldn't be
[579]
surprised if in the future the most
[581]
expensive piece of art was an nft
[584]
created by some kind of an ai
[586]
besides pfps and generative art there
[589]
are plenty of other types of nfts
[591]
available artists can create nfts for
[593]
their individual pieces of art a good
[596]
example is people who sold the most
[598]
expensive nft to date representing 5000
[601]
days of his work for 69 million dollars
[605]
at christie's in march 2021. fun fact if
[608]
people kept the 69 million dollars in
[611]
eth it would be worth over 140 million
[614]
dollars now
[616]
gaming is another area where nfts have
[618]
become more and more important axi
[621]
infinity cryptokitties and avagochi are
[624]
just a few good examples here and they
[626]
probably deserve a whole separate video
[628]
in the future metaverse is another big
[631]
area with huge potential for example the
[634]
land sold on decentraland is represented
[636]
as nfts i also wouldn't be surprised to
[639]
see more and more popular pfps being
[642]
used as avatars in the metaverse there
[644]
are also a lot of non-pfp collections
[647]
that have become really popular one of
[649]
them is ether rocks where nfts of
[652]
different rocks are being sold for
[654]
millions of dollars the main feature
[656]
they were one of the first nfts and
[658]
there are only 100 of them they were
[660]
even recently featured in one of the
[662]
popular business tv programs
[665]
besides pictures nfts can also represent
[667]
short clips or music
[669]
nba top shots became extremely popular
[672]
at the beginning of 2021 by selling
[674]
clips of the most viral moments in mba
[677]
euler beats is a set of algorithmically
[680]
generated music stored on chain on
[682]
ethereum
[684]
even tweets on twitter could be sold as
[686]
nfts the first tweet ever by jack dorsey
[689]
was sold in march 2021 for 2.9 million
[692]
dollars with new nft projects launching
[695]
pretty much every day we also have to
[697]
remember about a few challenges of this
[699]
still extremely new space
[701]
to start with not all nfts are stored in
[704]
the same way one of the main features of
[706]
nfts is their provable ownership
[709]
verifiability and provenance as we know
[712]
this is achieved by creating nfts on
[714]
decentralized blockchains such as
[716]
ethereum but here comes a problem
[718]
although the beautiful high-resolution
[720]
pictures of apes or penguins are cool
[723]
there is no way the image files
[725]
representing them can be stored on the
[727]
blockchain itself this leads to a
[729]
situation when most nfts only include a
[732]
link to the actual art and its metadata
[735]
which is then stored off-chain there is
[737]
a whole range of options when it comes
[739]
to storing data off-chain some projects
[742]
use centralized servers others try to
[744]
improve the situation by uploading their
[746]
metadata and art to ipfs other solutions
[750]
like rwith are also gaining traction
[753]
generative art and certain low
[754]
resolution nfts are some of the
[756]
exceptions here as they can be entirely
[758]
stored on chain
[760]
intellectual property rights are also
[762]
another big issue this is mostly as
[764]
there are a lot of inconsistencies
[766]
between different projects some nfts
[769]
allow the owners to use them however
[771]
they want other projects limit the
[773]
potential use of their nfts and still
[775]
assign the ip rights to the creators
[779]
ethereum gas fees can also certainly be
[781]
a problem most nft drops are launched in
[784]
the first com first served model this
[786]
attracts a lot of bot activities and can
[788]
spike up gas prices to crazy amounts
[791]
resulting in normal users either not
[793]
getting into the sale or massively
[795]
overpaying for their mint other models
[798]
such as dutch auctions notably used by
[800]
art blocks are also being explored here
[804]
it will be interesting to see if nfts
[806]
get adopted on layer 2 as this could
[808]
certainly alleviate some of the gas
[810]
pressures from ethereum
[812]
price discovery in an illiquid market
[815]
such as the nft market can also be a
[817]
problem fortunately there are a lot of
[819]
projects focusing on tokenizing nfts
[822]
which helps with improving liquidity and
[824]
can be used for things like discovering
[826]
the floor price of certain collections
[829]
nftx and fractional art are some of the
[831]
popular solutions here another major
[834]
challenge is the infrastructure for
[835]
buying selling and displaying nfts at
[838]
the moment most trading volume happens
[840]
on openc where the curation of projects
[843]
is centralized it would be amazing to
[845]
see openc decentralizing in the future
[847]
and other more decentralized solutions
[850]
getting adopted over time in the end i
[852]
believe that most of these challenges
[854]
will be solved sooner or later and they
[856]
are just normal pain points of a
[858]
completely new and exciting industry
[861]
besides ethereum which has become pretty
[862]
much the standard for launching nfts
[865]
there are other layer ones that allow
[866]
for minting and of these solana thesis
[869]
and polygon are gaining some traction in
[872]
this field
[873]
another interesting development was the
[875]
creation of daos with the main purpose
[877]
of buying nfts people who wouldn't be
[879]
able to afford certain entities by
[881]
themselves can come together and form a
[883]
dao bot nfts can be later tokenized and
[887]
distributed to the members of the dao a
[889]
good example here is pleaser dao that
[892]
bought the original dogecoin nft for 4
[895]
million dollars
[896]
it will also be interesting to see nfts
[898]
being used as marketing tools projects
[901]
will be able to enter their own nfts or
[904]
invite certain nft owners to an early
[906]
releases of their products
[908]
it's also amazing to see new things
[910]
being tried in the nft space one of
[912]
which is the recent launch of loot
[914]
instead of creating an nft with an image
[917]
described by certain metadata blued
[919]
flipped the whole process upside down
[922]
the loot nfts only contain the metadata
[924]
that describes a set of items in a
[927]
hypothetical rpg game it's up to the
[930]
loot community to decide how to use or
[932]
even how to visualize these items it
[935]
will be super interesting to see how far
[937]
loot can go in the future there are
[938]
pretty much no boundaries on how far
[940]
such an idea can be pushed but the main
[943]
challenge is to coordinate the community
[945]
over long term goals instead of focusing
[947]
on quick wins like unlimited airdrops
[950]
with opencv volume hitting over 3
[952]
billion dollars in july we are clearly
[955]
in a very interesting time for mfts
[957]
celebrities using board apes as their
[959]
profile pictures major business channels
[962]
discussing ether rocks visa buying
[964]
crypto punks and new nft funds popping
[966]
up on the one hand it feels like nfts
[969]
just got their mainstream attention on
[971]
the other hand the market with hundreds
[973]
of projects launching every week may
[976]
look a bit overheated
[977]
in the end it's worth noting that this
[979]
is very common in a completely new space
[981]
and resembles a lot of periods of
[983]
exponential growth in crypto personally
[986]
i think that whatever happens to the
[988]
market in the short to medium term
[990]
doesn't really matter and nfts are here
[992]
to stay the quality projects will most
[995]
likely appreciate in value over time the
[997]
same cannot be said about thousands of
[999]
copycat projects and low quality cash
[1002]
grabs i believe that nfts will
[1004]
completely revolutionize the internet in
[1007]
the future most things we own in the
[1009]
digital world will be nfts game items
[1012]
collectibles cool pieces of art and even
[1016]
our metaverse gear all of these have the
[1018]
potential to become nfts
[1020]
so what do you think about nfts what are
[1022]
some of your favorite projects in this
