Break out the borscht and pierogies comrades cause it's time to celebrate a true soviet hero.

(Intro Music)
[27]
Hello internet, welcome to Game Theory. Slightly funnier than Carlos Mencia. Slightly.
[34]
Who knew that the Super Mario franchise was so complex?
[38]
In Game Theory's most watched episode, "The Problems with Princess Peach",
[41]
We dove into Toadstool's psychological issues,
[44]
The kidnapping conspiracy between her and Bowser,
[48]
and the fact that Super Mario Brothers 3 may actually be a stage play.
[51]
Then, coming up in a few weeks, I plan on looking at what the series can teach about quantum mechanics.
[57]
because we didn't get enough of that during the Bioshock: Infinite episode
[61]
but, while all of this may be shocking,
[64]
it pales in comparison of today's topic
[67]
That Mario is a communist sympathizer.
[70]
Trust me, when loyal theorists of deadly sin asked me to look into this at the SGCGC
[77]
skeptical matt was skeptical
[79]
until I discovered that everything
[82]
from Mario's design
[84]
To the mushrooms he eats,
[85]
to Japan's political history points in
[88]
the direction of our platforming plumber
[90]
being a comrade from the motherland.
[93]
So is Mario jump man Mario more Russian
[96]
than Dolph Lundgren in Rocky four?
[98]
We're done Stalin, time to find out.
[101]
For those of you who didn't understand the epic
[103]
rap battles season 2 finale, here's a
[109]
quick two-minute refresher for your
[110]
Russian history. The period leading up to
[112]
World War One was a difficult time for
[114]
Mother Russia. In order to finance the
[116]
war, the government began printing
[118]
millions and millions of rubles. Ruble
[121]
notes and this caused massive inflation.
[124]
The prices for food skyrocketed,
[127]
quadrupling in the span of four years
[130]
but workers saw no change in pay, meaning
[133]
that no one could actually afford to
[135]
feed themselves. It literally took
[137]
wheelbarrows of money to pay for one
[140]
loaf of bread. Poor sanitation, dangerous
[143]
work conditions, hours of slave labor
[145]
that afforded them nothing. You can see
[147]
how people were angry and
[149]
were angry at the king. Or in Russia's
[151]
case the Tsar, Tsar Nicholas the second
[155]
On March 7th 1917, The February
[158]
revolution- Wait seriously the February
[160]
revolution happened in March? Fail,
[163]
Russia, Fail -saw the people overthrow
[165]
Nicholas and his royal family. Enter
[168]
communism, a movement to create a
[170]
classless moneyless society in which
[173]
everyone from the working-class
[174]
proletariat to the rich bourgeoisie
[177]
shares the wealth. This was the teachings
[179]
of Marx.
[180]
The other one. The other other
[183]
one. Is that really him? Oh, he looks like
[185]
a cross between socialism and Santa Claus.
[187]
To the fed up Russians, a system in
[190]
which everyone shares the wealth seemed
[191]
pretty good and on November 7th of
[194]
1917, the October Revolution - you can
[197]
probably see a pattern there - the
[199]
Communists took over. Now for those of
[201]
you who weren't forced to read Animal
[203]
Farm four times during your high school
[205]
career, there are three important
[207]
communists to know; Lenin, Stalin and
[210]
Trotsky. *ding* This one led the Bolshevik Party
[213]
in the October Revolution and did a lot
[215]
to transform Russia into a socialist
[217]
state before he was taken down by the
[219]
sith. After his death this one got screwed over,
[222]
exiled, and assassinated by this one
[225]
who took power screwed everything up and
[227]
was responsible for nearly 20 million deaths
[230]
via his secret police famines and
[232]
purges. To put Stalin's actions in
[235]
perspective, compare him to Hitler whose
[237]
Holocaust killed 12 million people.
[240]
Any way you slice it; not nice guys. And that
[243]
dear theorists, is everything you need to
[245]
know to understand this episode and pass
[248]
the Russian unit in world history. So how
[250]
could Mario possibly be seen as
[252]
communist propaganda well slap my buns
[255]
and call me Joseph McCarthy cuz we're
[257]
going to expose this supposed Italian
[260]
for what he really is, let's start with
[262]
his design what color is Mario most
[265]
associated with? Red. Ever wonder why red
[268]
was chosen the classic story is that it
[271]
was to contrast against the blue
[273]
background which would make sense if red
[275]
was truly the color opposite of
[278]
blue but it's not, on any color wheel
[281]
orange is the color that is directly
[283]
across from blue and orange has just as
[287]
many shades of red if not more in the
[290]
NES color palette how much orange is
[293]
used in the game? Next to none.
[295]
How much red was used? A lot.
[298]
Back in the real world, communism was also strongly
[301]
associated with red being known as
[304]
The red threat, the Red Scare, the Red Terror.
[307]
Then there's fire flower Mario clad all
[310]
in red and white if he wasn't sporting
[312]
the communist colors before he certainly
[315]
is now the red and white of Lenin's
[318]
Bolshevik Party but it's not just his
[321]
colors check out the Hat is it a
[323]
coincidence that Mario's hat just so
[326]
happens to sport a similar shape and
[328]
more strangely a similar design as
[331]
communism most infamous leader? perhaps.
[334]
I mean it is a bit odd that Mario's hat
[336]
and Stalin's both have a circle in the
[339]
front with a signature logo but we can
[341]
pass that off as happenstance. How about
[344]
that facial hair though is it also a
[347]
coincidence that Mario's moustache looks
[350]
like it was directly ripped off the face
[352]
of someone in contention for the world's
[354]
most evil man? Four out of five communist
[357]
leaders agree a good moustache is half
[360]
the uniform. Mario is mustache approved
[363]
and while we're looking at character
[365]
design let's not forget one of the
[367]
recurring villains of the Mario
[369]
franchise Wario. Wario was created as
[373]
the anti Mario am i right? And what are
[376]
the two things wario is known for?
[379]
*distant* being ten feet tall. Oh shut up. Being fat and
[382]
being greedy he's a walking American
[385]
stereotype an overweight capitalist pig
[388]
who eats way too much, and loves money
[391]
just look at his games they're all about
[394]
collecting treasure accumulating coins
[396]
gaining more wealth. Even back to the first
[399]
Wario Land the better endings get you
[402]
bigger and bigger houses and achievement
[405]
being tied to material wealth is as American as
[407]
apple pie. Wario's the bougie fat cat
[411]
counterpoint to our proletariat plumber
[414]
and let's look at that for a second
[416]
shall we? What is Mario exactly? A plumber,
[420]
Who started off as a carpenter both
[423]
working class physical labor positions
[426]
that define members of the Communist
[429]
Party remember this was a political
[431]
movement responding to the mistreatment
[433]
of the working class by the exclusionary
[435]
upper classes meaning that blue-collar
[437]
Mario would fit the bill perfectly and
[441]
while we're looking at Mario's
[443]
proletariat predilection what's his
[445]
signature weapon again? Oh that's right,
[448]
Hammers. Need i say more? If only magnus
[451]
appeared in these games then we'd have
[453]
the complete communist toolkit but
[455]
that's not all dear theorists what's the
[458]
goal of super mario brothers? To
[461]
overthrow a king. King koopa, and what was
[464]
the role of the russian revolution?
[466]
To overthrow a king, Tsar Nicholas the
[469]
second and what do you do at the end of
[472]
every level in mario? Rip down a flag at
[475]
the end of every level Mario tears down
[478]
a flag to raise his own. A red star on a
[481]
white background, no that's not a hostile
[484]
macys take over my friends. That's Mario
[487]
raising the symbol of his Soviet
[490]
brethren along with the hammer and
[492]
sickle the red star was the other emblem
[495]
of the Communist Party specifically of
[497]
the Red Army, with the five points of the
[499]
star meant to represent the five fingers
[502]
of the communist worker's hand and what's
[505]
on that flag Mario tears down? Is that a
[508]
pixelated green peace sign? So according
[511]
to Mario it's down with peace and up
[514]
with the people the people's Mario.
[518]
But let's take a break from communism for a
[520]
second shall we? And look at the rest of
[522]
the game, speculation has always gone on
[525]
about the mushrooms Mario uses it's a
[528]
bizarre power up right? Well wonder no more,
[531]
I give you
[532]
the Mario mushroom Amanita muscaria
[536]
the fly amanita look familiar? Not only
[540]
does it look like Mario's mushrooms, it
[542]
acts like them too. As this poisonous
[545]
mushroom has been used throughout
[546]
history for its ability to cause
[548]
hallucinations. And you know where in the
[551]
world it's found? Siberia aka the eastern
[555]
half of Mother Russia. But seriously if
[559]
you're still questioning Mario's loyalty,
[561]
stop to consider the development of the
[564]
game if Super Mario were developed in
[566]
America there would be no chance of any
[569]
sort of communist leanings. But as we all
[571]
know Nintendo is located in Japan and
[575]
while Japan may not be a communist state
[577]
the Japanese Communist Party has been a
[580]
strong presence in their election since
[582]
the 1950s, in fact it was at its
[585]
strongest in the 1970s and 80s when
[589]
mario games were first being developed
[591]
of the nearly 50 million votes cast in
[594]
any given election during that time well
[597]
over five million or ten percent go to
[600]
the Japanese Communist Party is it then
[603]
so difficult to believe that one maybe
[606]
two of the people involved in the
[608]
development of the game could have
[609]
subtly worked in some of their political
[611]
beliefs? All it takes is one and you know
[615]
what they say in soviet russia you don't
[618]
play mario games. Mario games play you.
[621]
but hey it's just, hold on a sec
[625]
seriously, mario is communist come on. The
[629]
green peace sign Mario tears down
[631]
clearly it's a skull. If it was meant to
[635]
be a peace sign there would be one more
[637]
green pixel at the bottom on either side
[639]
to complete the round lock and while yes
[642]
Mario may be overthrowing King Koopa,
[644]
he's also instating another aristocracy
[647]
this one supervised by a mentally
[649]
unstable princess in pink not much of a
[652]
people's plumber there huh jump man?
[654]
Regardless though it makes you question
[656]
right? So is mario communist? Maybe he is
[661]
maybe he isn't. I'll leave that for you
[663]
to debate but from
[664]
mushrooms to his enemies to the design of
[667]
the character to Japanese political
[669]
history it's definitely not as
[671]
ridiculous as it might initially sound.
[674]
But in the end it's just a theory, a game theory
[679]
Nostrovia.
[682]
Welcome back to the super amazing end card tournament for
[685]
