If you're anything like me, you got those聽 monthly child tax credit payments in 2021聽聽
[5]
and now you're wondering: How in the world do I聽 file this on my taxes? Well, I'm here today to聽聽
[10]
give you some answers. I'll tell you three ways聽 to figure out how much money you already got,聽聽
[14]
I'll tell you how much money you should have聽 gotten, and I'll tell you who's going to need to聽聽
[19]
repay those monthly payments. Let's look at those聽 three ways that you can figure out how much money聽聽
[23]
you got. The first is the simplest and that's to聽 look at your bank statement. You're going to want聽聽
[28]
to look at ACH payments that were from IRS TREAS聽 and it'll have a memo on it that says Child CTC.聽聽
[35]
By looking for that Child CTC, you can figure out聽 which ones are those child tax credit payments聽聽
[40]
as opposed to regular tax refund payments. Keep聽 in mind that if you are married filing jointly,聽聽
[46]
it is possible that the two spouses could have had聽 deposits into two separate bank accounts so make聽聽
[51]
sure you're finding all of those deposits. Your聽 second option is to check the IRS child tax credit聽聽
[57]
portal. I have videos about how to get into those聽 it's not the easiest but you can do it. There聽聽
[62]
are two different ways to get in you can use an聽 IRS.gov account or you can use an ID.me account.聽聽
[67]
I'll link at the end to those videos in case you聽 need to get into the portal but inside the portal聽聽
[72]
you'll be able to see all the payments and what聽 bank accounts they were sent to. And the third聽聽
[76]
way you can figure out how much you got is to wait聽 for your letter from the IRS. The IRS is going to聽聽
[80]
send letters to everyone who got monthly payments聽 in 2021. It's called the IRS letter 6419. Now of聽聽
[87]
course they're saying they're gonna send them to聽 everyone but we know from past experience that the聽聽
[91]
IRS has had a rough time lately getting everything聽 done so it might not work out for everyone. They聽聽
[97]
are supposed to be sending those letters out in聽 January 2022. Let me know down in the comments聽聽
[102]
if you got one. I haven't gotten mine yet but the聽 letter should detail all the payments you got and聽聽
[106]
the total that you should be entering into your聽 tax return. Now if you're married filing jointly,聽聽
[111]
both spouses will get that letter. The letter聽 should be mailed to the address that was on file聽聽
[116]
with the IRS as of your last tax return that聽 you filed, unless you changed it in one of the聽聽
[121]
portals. So while there are multiple ways you can聽 figure out how much money you got from the IRS,聽聽
[126]
I would suggest waiting for that letter because聽 that is what you're going to use to enter into聽聽
[130]
your tax return and you do want that number to be聽 right. If you are wrong about the number you enter聽聽
[136]
into your tax return, it is going to delay your聽 tax refund this year. All right so next up how聽聽
[141]
much should you have gotten? If you have a child聽 that was under age six as of December 31st 2021,聽聽
[148]
then you should have gotten a total of $1800 in聽 child tax credit payments. That is half of the聽聽
[155]
total child tax credit. The total child tax credit聽 for children under six is $3600. You got $1800 in聽聽
[162]
payments and you're supposed to get $1800 at tax聽 time. If your child is between the ages of six but聽聽
[167]
under age eighteen you should have gotten a total聽 of $1500 in payments and you'll get $1500 on your聽聽
[174]
tax return. Now remember that those payments did聽 go to the person who claimed the child in 2020.聽聽
[181]
They got the payments in 2021 but it's based on聽 who claimed the child in 2020. So this gets a聽聽
[186]
little complicated for people who have parents who聽 are not married and file separately. I know some聽聽
[191]
families like to go back and forth on who claims聽 the child so it could have gone to the wrong聽聽
[196]
parent in 2021. If you got payments and you were聽 not the parent who is going to claim the child for聽聽
[201]
2021 it is possible you will have to repay those聽 payments. The other situation that can happen is聽聽
[207]
if your income in 2020 was lower than your income聽 in 2021 and in 2021 your income was too high to聽聽
[214]
qualify for this expanded child tax credit.聽 If that happened you may also have to repay聽聽
[219]
these payments. All right so if you are in one of聽 those situations, you may not have to repay them.聽聽
[225]
The expanded child tax credit has what's called聽 a repayment protection program so lower income聽聽
[231]
families that got payments that they should not聽 have gotten do not have to repay them. So if you聽聽
[235]
are a single filer under forty thousand dollars聽 a year or a joint filer under sixty thousand聽聽
[241]
dollars a year, you will will not have to repay聽 any payments even if you got some that you should聽聽
[245]
not have gotten. If your income is between 40 and聽 80 thousand as a single filer or between 60 and聽聽
[252]
120 thousand as a joint filer, you may only have聽 to repay a partial amount of that extra payment聽聽
[257]
that you got that you should not have gotten. I聽 do also want to point out for those who may have聽聽
[261]
to repay some of these payments, it is very likely聽 that it's just going to reduce your refund amount.聽聽
[266]
You're very unlikely to have to actually write聽 a check to the IRS because most people do get a聽聽
[271]
tax refund at the end of the year. So if you were聽 supposed to get $2,000, maybe you're only gonna聽聽
[275]
get $500 but it doesn't mean you're gonna have聽 to write a check to repay the IRS. If you haven't聽聽
[280]
filed your taxes yet, next up definitely check聽 out my video about the best tax software in 2022.聽聽
