Choosing SIMPLICITY & FULFILLMENT - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
hello today i want to talk about the
[3]
voluntary simplicity movement
[5]
it is inspired by an article that i have
[8]
read
[9]
wealth is not a bad thing of course and
[12]
for those of us
[13]
living in wealthy countries we are
[15]
blessed and thankful for it
[17]
but the way that we see consumption and
[20]
status
[21]
leaves many of us still feel deprived or
[24]
lacked
[25]
we are not necessarily happier and quite
[28]
often we feel stuck in this
[30]
rat race of having to spend more money
[33]
work
[33]
more feel more stressed out and burned
[36]
out
[37]
the time we spent working just for
[40]
accumulating more and more things
[42]
is time that we lose to spend on things
[44]
that
[45]
give us actual meaning in life such as
[48]
community or
[49]
social engagement more time with family
[52]
artistic or intellectual
[54]
projects to find more fulfilling
[56]
employment or
[58]
political participation more focus on
[61]
sustainable living methods
[63]
spiritual exploration reading
[67]
contemplation relaxation and so on
[70]
none of which need to rely on much money
[74]
voluntary simplicity can be understood
[77]
as an
[77]
empowering expression of freedom a
[80]
choice to live
[81]
with fewer market commodities in a
[84]
belief that a better life
[86]
and a better world will result
[89]
voluntary simplicity is an oppositional
[92]
living strategy
[93]
that rejects the high consumption
[96]
materialistic lifestyle of
[98]
consumer culture and that strives for
[101]
the simple life or downshifting
[104]
sometimes it is also called
[106]
the quiet revolution and this approach
[109]
to life
[110]
involves providing for material needs as
[113]
simple
[114]
and as directly as possible and to
[117]
direct
[118]
more time and energy towards
[121]
non-materialistic sources of meaning
[124]
and this generally means accepting a
[126]
lower income and a lower level of
[128]
consumption
[129]
in exchange for more time and more
[132]
freedom
[133]
to pursue other life goals and according
[136]
to this philosophy of living
[139]
personal and social progress is measured
[141]
not by the display of
[143]
wealth or status and the notion of
[146]
simple living is
[148]
not new of course it has been very
[150]
prominent in
[151]
a lot of big names that we know from the
[153]
past but it
[154]
is becoming more and more difficult in
[157]
our past modern life
[159]
where it seems that consumption and
[161]
luxury are
[162]
glorified as never before we are not
[165]
against technology or
[167]
science but we don't believe in this
[169]
omniscent omnipresent
[172]
view that science has today in our
[175]
society
[176]
we are willing to explore alternatives
[178]
in all aspects of our lives and our
[180]
health
[181]
and we don't just take a narrative that
[184]
is given to us
[185]
for granted money provides power in the
[188]
market
[189]
power to purchase and consume desired
[191]
commodities
[192]
whether goods or services consumption
[196]
by satisfying market references is
[198]
supposed to lead to well-being
[200]
in essence this is the economic
[202]
foundation of consumer culture
[204]
its fundamental prescription is that
[207]
people should seek well-being
[209]
in higher incomes and more consumption
[212]
the problem however is
[213]
that the pursuit of income and
[215]
consumption can easily distract people
[218]
from what is best in their lives
[220]
functioning to lock people into a work
[222]
and spend cycle that has no end
[224]
and attains no lasting satisfaction
[228]
many simplicity theorists argue that if
[231]
people
[232]
in affluent societies are prepared to
[235]
rethink their relationship with money
[237]
and with possessions
[239]
they just might be able to free up more
[241]
time and energy for the pursuit of what
[243]
truly inspires them and makes them happy
[246]
whatever that may be lowering standards
[249]
of living
[250]
measured by income consumption can
[252]
actually
[253]
lead to increased quality of life
[256]
measured by
[257]
subjective well-being when we work less
[260]
we have
[260]
less stress and we can be of a greater
[263]
value for our communities
[265]
or even just for our friends and family
[268]
we can bring more value into their lives
[270]
by being more present
[271]
devoting more time being able to listen
[274]
and so forth
[276]
it makes me feel good that i can choose
[278]
to live simple
[279]
in this world that is increasingly
[281]
becoming more complex
[283]
and i want to share that for those who
[285]
are searching for an easier way
[287]
different paths and alternatives but of
[290]
course
[291]
you do you and live the way you want to
[294]
there is no judgment involved
[296]
and the only thing that matters is that
[298]
we're living the way we want to
[300]
and that we are listening to our own
[302]
needs and wants
[303]
and we respect those of others thanks so
[306]
much for watching i really appreciate it
[309]
and i hope to see you next time again
