[0]
- And we're back with Cherie and Marqus.
[1]
They're a married couple struggling
[3]
with financial infidelity.
[5]
Tell us what's going on.
[6]
- So the first thing that happened was when
[8]
he took out the 401(k) to start a real estate business deal.
[13]
And it trunked, it went bad,
[16]
and we had just had a baby.
[18]
In between that I had been diagnosed with cancer,
[22]
and then we had another baby,
[25]
and then we had to finish up the cancer,
[26]
so we had all these medical bills that had piled up.
[31]
The second deal that went bad,
[33]
or the money thing that went bad,
[35]
that he didn't tell me about,
[36]
was two years ago.
[37]
He quit his job, and didn't let me know.
[39]
It was like, he came home, was like,
[41]
hey, I gave two weeks notice at my job,
[43]
and I was like, okay. (laughs)
[45]
So, that's the two big things,
[49]
financial things that have happened.
[51]
- So, Marqus.
[52]
- [Marqus] Yes.
[54]
- How did all --
[55]
(audience laughing)
[57]
- How did this happen?
[59]
- I take it, it is my responsibility as a husband, father,
[62]
in our family, to make sure I provide, protect,
[65]
and do any and everything for our family and for our boys.
[69]
So going into our second year of marriage,
[70]
preparing for our second son,
[72]
I figured, gey, I earned some money, got 401(k).
[75]
I'd been trying to learn real estate investing,
[78]
so I was like, I've got this money just sitting to the side,
[80]
let me put it to some use.
[81]
That deal totally went left on me.
[84]
I also had to file for bankruptcy,
[86]
I had to let go of my investment property, that foreclosed.
[91]
It was rough, it's been very hard.
[92]
- Very hard.
[93]
- So after our third son was born,
[95]
we figured out it was just best that Cherie
[97]
would stay home with the kids because the price of daycare,
[101]
just her check alone was covering daycare and gas,
[104]
just to get back and forth from work.
[105]
It's like it wasn't worth the added stress.
[109]
Cherie would tell me like,
[110]
you leave home and it's one version of Marqus,
[113]
but you come home totally different.
[115]
And it's a version that she never wanted to see.
[117]
So I had to check myself a lot,
[120]
before I even set foot in the door.
[121]
But it got to a point we were able to sell our house,
[125]
the house we were living in at the time,
[127]
we made some money, paid off some bills,
[128]
and on my way to a business meeting in Charlotte,
[131]
for my current employer at the time,
[133]
Steve, your book Jump had just came out.
[137]
I listened to Jump,
[138]
(audience laughing)
[139]
on that four-and-a-half, five hour drive back home,
[143]
I completed that thing, and within that week,
[147]
I mean, you gave me all the motivation I needed.
[150]
- He said this is your fault.
[151]
(audience laughing)
[152]
- I'm not saying that, I'm not saying that at all.
[153]
- He read it and he jumped!
[154]
- It is all one me, it's all on me.
[156]
I'm not saying that at all, I'm not saying that.
[157]
(laughter and clapping)
[160]
But when you hear things in life,
[163]
you feel like it's a message directed towards you.
[165]
- I'm just trying to understand how
[167]
(Marqus laughing)
[168]
all of the sudden this interview...
[170]
(laughter)
[173]
On the way to Charlotte, you know,
[175]
you had already made up your mind.
[177]
- Oh, you right.
[177]
- And took this money off this real estate,
[180]
out the sale of this house,
[181]
you was going.
[182]
You was already going.
[185]
Don't put this on Jump now.
[187]
- I didn't!
[188]
I'm not, I'm not.
[189]
I'm not putting it on Jump.
[190]
- Alright, let's start talking about where Marqus went wrong
[193]
- Yep.
[194]
- When he started this business,
[196]
now Farnoosh, where do you think Marqus went wrong?
[198]
- I encourage you to want to continue this ambition,
[201]
but it's really important
[202]
that you take care of your household finances first,
[205]
that they are locked solid,
[206]
so you can do this business with more sense of,
[210]
you know, I can take some risks and fall, yeah I will.
[213]
But my house is going to not crumble as a result of it.
[216]
- What are some of the tips that you would give Marqus?
[219]
- So the first tip, and I love this tip,
[221]
I think everyone will appreciate this,
[223]
is that you don't need a lot of money to start a business.
[226]
You cashed out your 401(k), not necessary.
[228]
The most important thing in the beginning,
[230]
is to invest your time, and that's free.
[232]
There are also, speaking of free, resources out there
[235]
for you to latch onto.
[236]
The SBA has resources, free online classes.
[240]
SCORE is also an organization around the country,
[243]
they have an office in Atlanta,
[244]
you can actually go in and get a coach,
[247]
who will work with you.
[248]
So invest time, not money.
[250]
Secondly, keep your day job.
[252]
You want to give yourself the bandwidth to try to experiment
[255]
and take on some risk,
[256]
without really compromising the home life.
[259]
And then last, but not least,
[261]
really create a divide between the personal life
[264]
and the business life.
[265]
Have your own checking account, savings account,
[267]
as well as credit card, same for the business.
[270]
But all the while, where you really need to be aligning,
[273]
is the communication.
[274]
You both need to be understanding
[276]
what's happening on both sides.
[278]
And in the event your business needs more money,
[281]
and you need to take it from your savings,
[283]
how is that gonna work?
[284]
What's that going to look like?
[285]
Have that conversation.
[286]
- Okay
[287]
(audience applauding)
[290]
- Okay, let's go to Spirit,
[292]
now they say that they're on the brink of divorce,
[296]
the question to you is can their marriage be saved
[300]
from this point where they are?
[302]
- Well, I want to say absolutely,
[303]
because any two people who work hard enough
[305]
to make something work, can.
[306]
But I want to know the number.
[308]
When you say that he took money out of the 401(k),
[310]
and you're just learning about it,
[312]
how much money are we talking about here?
[313]
- 25K, 25 thousand.
[315]
- You said that you wanted to protect and provide.
[318]
- [Marqus] Sure.
[319]
- And what you did was you stole and you exposed.
[322]
And so there are some real issues here,
[324]
so I will not say absolutely,
[326]
I will say we've got a lot of work to do.
[327]
- Sure.
[328]
- Look, we can beat this guy up all day,
[333]
I understood where he was coming from.
[335]
Because I'm that guy.
[338]
The mistake that was made was not sharing it with you.
[342]
You could handle it a lot better,
[345]
and I think you realize that now Marqus.
[346]
- [Marqus] Most definitely, most definitely.
[347]
- Had you shared with with her.
[348]
- Yes sir.
[349]
- So I understand.
[350]
I can get him.
[352]
'Cause what Marqus is, he a comer.
[355]
See I was a comer, it just ain't nobody seen me coming.
[358]
(laughter and clapping)
[363]
- We're gonna hear what Spirit has to say,
[365]
and we're gonna find out if our couple can take
[368]
the divorce option off the table when we come back.
[372]
(jazzy music)
