Enterprise Risk Management - YouTube

The ERM Initiative is a thought leadership  center in the Poole College of Management  

providing thought leadership to help business  leaders, particularly the executive suite and the  

board get their arms around the top risks that are  emerging that could affect their business. From  

a strategic perspective, so we're working with  organizations to help them get their arms around  

all the various risks that could impact their  organization's success. Help them think through  

those risks, manage those risks, including taking  some risk to really be more successful as they go  

out into the future. The ERM Initiative is a great  example of the 'Think and Do' mission of NC State  

and that we are connecting academia with the real  world executives that are leading businesses of  

all types across the the entire United States and  even beyond. What we're doing is we're connecting  

the thought leadership that comes through our  research through our teaching of graduate programs  

but interacting with business leaders to  learn more about the challenges they face.  

Some of the issues that make it difficult  to get their arms around all their risks  

so we can feed that back into our research as well  as our teaching. So it's very circular in a lot of  

ways in that we are connecting real world insights  through the executives to what we do in our  

thought leadership side and I think each informs  the other. The ERM Initiative provides a number of  

opportunities for executives to get engaged with  what we're doing. We do a number of programs where  

executive education is and other sort of special  events. So they can be engaged by attending.  

They also can participate by helping us share  their insights, being speakers on programs.  

We have an ERM advisory board of about 50  organizations that are a part of our initiative  

in a more formal way and they partner with us  coming on site several times during the year  

both virtually as well as in-person to really  engage with us and help us understand deeper some  

of the challenges that they face. Students can  get involved by first being a part of some classes  

that we offer. I think the NC State opportunities  are unique to really develop their skills  

and knowledge in the area of risk management  particularly from an enterprise risk management  

view that leads them into the opportunities to do  some practicums where they're actually doing risk  

leadership for organizations in a consultative  way so that can be a great way for them to get  

engaged. Some can be engaged in some of the  research, helping us do some of the research  

and some of the writing and managing our website  where they'll learn by reading a lot of the topics  

that we're having their help us organize that  and put that on our website. I think the ERM  

Initiative provides a great example of really  supporting what Poole College is trying to do.  

We're very focused on the real world 'Think and  Do' mindset, but really an applied way. Getting  

out there, interacting with businesses and helping  provide that thought leadership and so the ERM  

Initiative is doing all that. We're very engaged  with business leaders all across the United States  

really learning from them and then helping them.  And I think that just is a great example of what  

Poole College does really well - that real world  integration and applying the knowledge that we  

have and really helping advance the business  community and how they think about risk. One of  

the unique ways the ERM Initiative connects and  provides thought leadership to the global world  

is through our website. We have assembled over  700 articles thought papers, research studies,  

video interviews of all kinds of topics to really  help provide insights and learning for people that  

are leading an enterprise risk management function  in their organization to tap into. The library has  

been organized by a number of topics  where people can go in and look for  

areas of focus that they're particularly seeking  information on. They can search the website and  

we're constantly updating that with new emerging  topics, so it's a great resource that we're very  

proud of and it gets a lot of activity so we're  very excited about what we're doing through that.
