one of the biggest government relief
[2]
programs in history the paycheck
[4]
protection program or ppp loan program
[7]
was meant to be a lifeline for small
[9]
businesses through a dark period of the
[11]
pandemic from coast to coast empty
[14]
streets businesses closed as dire as
[16]
things looked in march and april of 2020
[19]
many entities ended up faring well
[21]
through covid some of them benefited
[23]
from the program and got loans forgiven
[25]
even after their business bounced back
[28]
an nbc news analysis of data from the
[30]
government's pandemic response
[32]
accountability committee found that the
[34]
federal government authorized more than
[37]
300 000 ppp loans to real estate
[40]
entities claiming just one employee that
[43]
adds up to 3.9 billion dollars in loans
[46]
backed by the u.s small business
[48]
administration yet unlike other
[51]
industries like tourism and hospitality
[53]
which suffered during the pandemic real
[56]
estate boomed bidding wars are on the
[58]
rise 41 of listings sparked bidding wars
[62]
existing home sales in june jumped 20.7
[66]
that is the largest one-month jump ever
[69]
since the realtors began recording in
[70]
1968 between april of 2020 and january
[75]
of 2021 existing home sales jumped more
[78]
than 50 percent now the price of homes
[81]
are at least 38 percent higher than in
[84]
january of 2020. in santa barbara real
[87]
estate agent gary goldberg was involved
[89]
in the sales of luxury homes equaling
[92]
more than 27 million dollars in 2020 in
[95]
2021 jumping to 82 million according to
[99]
a history of listings on zillow even
[101]
estimating a conservative commission
[104]
that could still mean potentially seven
[106]
figures and earnings over the two years
[108]
yet public records show goldberg's
[110]
business also received ninety five
[113]
thousand dollars in ppp loans which were
[116]
forgiven in 2021 we reached out to ask
[119]
him about it but he declined to comment
[121]
there's no indication he did anything
[124]
illegal he's also not alone in west los
[127]
angeles
[128]
enzo ricciardelli was the agent in 12.2
[132]
million dollars of home sales in 2020
[134]
per his zillow history and his business
[137]
also received more than a 145 000 loan
[141]
from the paycheck protection program
[143]
forgiven in 2021 efforts to reach him
[146]
were unsuccessful nbc news reached out
[150]
to a dozen agents with strong 2020 sales
[153]
and whose businesses obtained ppp loans
[156]
in excess of ninety thousand dollars
[159]
that were wholly or partially forgiven
[161]
by the federal government none agreed to
[163]
do an on-camera interview aaron stackley
[166]
with the national association of
[168]
realtors defended those who asked for
[170]
ppp loan forgiveness in her industry
[173]
they had open houses cancelled because
[175]
obviously people didn't want people
[177]
traipsing through their homes if they
[179]
were received the loans in good faith
[182]
and if they follow the program's rules
[184]
then that is what the sba and congress
[186]
intended to happen the loans were made
[188]
with the understanding that they'd be
[190]
forgiven if the recipient met certain
[192]
criteria like spending 60 percent of it
[195]
on payroll
[196]
but not everybody was able to get
[198]
assistance back in los angeles we
[200]
visited an address listed on one
[202]
realtor's loan a new business had moved
[205]
in the manager there telling us what it
[207]
was like to get denied in the beginning
[210]
of the pandemic it was very hard because
[212]
everything was shutting down and closing
[214]
and
[215]
not available and
[217]
it was pretty tough numb we're barely
[220]
trying to
[221]
get our heads above the water now the
[223]
banks were also very kind of iffy they
[226]
were saying we are not qualifying yet
[228]
for real estate entities forgivable
[231]
loans were given back to realtors in
[233]
many booming markets 3.6 million to real
[236]
estate entities in beverly hills 4.3
[239]
million in el paso texas and 14.9
[242]
million in charlotte north carolina out
[245]
of the realtors we tried to contact one
[248]
did say she plans to return the money
[250]
phyllis patrick a real estate agent in
[252]
austin texas got an eighty three
[255]
thousand three hundred dollar loan she
[257]
says she'll pay hers back citing her
[260]
good business through the pandemic
[264]
squad venegas joins us now and gwen i
[266]
guess i understand a business asking for
[268]
forgiveness if you can ask why not ask
[270]
but from the government's perspective
[272]
why did the federal government forgive
[274]
all these loans even for businesses that
[276]
did well through the pandemic
[279]
that's a big part of the question aaron
[281]
we spoke to the small business
[282]
administration about this and a senior
[285]
sba official told nbc news that multiple
[288]
pieces of legislation dictated the terms
[291]
of the loan program and they were quote
[293]
extremely liberal and extremely generous
[295]
when it came to the loan forgiveness
[297]
essentially that's how the program was
[299]
designed but as the country now
[301]
questions if the pandemic relief was too
[303]
big with inflation where it is we
[305]
thought we would highlight how there
[306]
were lots of businesses that as you saw
[309]
got relief that actually did pretty well
[311]
these last two years
