[5]
in this video
[7]
we will explore the chinese aviation
[9]
market
[10]
and the four chinese jets that will
[12]
rival boeing and airbus for the next
[15]
century
[16]
everything from small regional jets to
[18]
lumbering aircraft to rival the boeing
[21]
747
[22]
and airbus a380 what are they
[25]
and what will they be like to fly and
[28]
why the western worlds have noticed
[30]
let's crack open this fortune cookie and
[33]
find
[42]
out
[48]
the aviation market is made up of two
[51]
big
[52]
players boeing and airbus and as well as
[55]
embraer
[56]
but soon there may be a third player who
[59]
rivals the two friendly giants
[62]
comac comax stands for the commercial
[66]
aircraft corporation of china
[68]
essentially china's economy is
[70]
snowballing so much
[72]
that they need to ensure that they have
[74]
their own aviation industry
[76]
to keep up with demand china plans to
[79]
build an extra 200
[81]
airports over the next 15 years to cope
[84]
with this relentless growth
[86]
spurt and only last year boeing's own
[89]
commercial market outlook projection
[91]
said that china would require 8090
[95]
new passenger aircraft plus related
[98]
aviation services
[100]
over the next 20 years a market that is
[103]
worth
[104]
2.9 trillion dollars
[107]
so honestly why doesn't china take a
[110]
chunk of that domestic market for
[112]
themselves
[114]
why give money to the west when you have
[116]
scores of engineers
[118]
and a chance to build a healthy local
[120]
economy
[121]
after all it worked for cars and trains
[125]
planes are essentially the same well
[128]
kind of
[128]
but we'll get into that so what are the
[131]
aircraft that comac
[133]
is planning to bring to the market there
[136]
is the arj21
[138]
which stands for the advanced regional
[140]
jet
[141]
nicknamed the soaring phoenix in the
[144]
local language
[146]
then there are the three brothers the
[149]
c919
[150]
the c929 and the c939
[154]
c standing for comac nine for forever
[158]
and the last two digits for how many
[160]
tens of passengers
[161]
each aircraft can carry so let's
[165]
break this down and start with the
[166]
smallest of the four the arj21
[170]
the arj had its first flight in 2008
[175]
but it took seven years to be delivered
[177]
to its first customers
[180]
32 of these aircraft are currently
[182]
flying across
[183]
china and there are 208 reported
[186]
orders there are two versions a
[190]
90-seater-700
[192]
and 105-seater-900
[195]
the base model only has a range of 1200
[198]
nautical miles
[200]
which is the equivalent of the very
[202]
first boeing 737
[204]
from 1967. but there is an additional
[208]
upgrade to boost it up to 2000 nautical
[211]
miles
[212]
while small as it's designed for
[214]
regional travel in china
[215]
it doesn't actually require the distance
[218]
that
[219]
is for the next in the series next up we
[222]
have the c919 which is the equivalent to
[225]
the boeing 737 and the airbus a320
[228]
which are both the most popular aircraft
[231]
ever built
[232]
there is only one version which can seat
[235]
168 passengers in an all-economy layout
[238]
or passengers with a business class
[241]
it has similar engines to the boeing 737
[244]
max
[245]
which allow it to fly a range of 2 200
[248]
nautical miles
[250]
again there's an extended range version
[252]
that can push this up to 3 000 nautical
[254]
miles
[255]
and this aircraft is allegedly very
[257]
popular with over 1 000
[259]
orders now just a quick side note
[263]
when i say orders for this aircraft that
[265]
needs to be taken with a grain of salt
[268]
as nearly all of these orders are from
[270]
chinese carriers
[271]
who are owned by the government or
[275]
they are nations in developing regions
[277]
that have significant chinese investment
[280]
or they are from engine manufacturers
[282]
who are providing the engines for the
[284]
planes
[285]
so far no western airline has shown
[289]
any interest in the comac aircraft but
[292]
we will get to that later
[294]
so far six prototypes of the c919 have
[297]
been built for flight testing
[299]
and it cost around nine billion dollars
[302]
so far to produce them
[304]
although again other sources have
[306]
sneakily suggested that the real cost is
[309]
closer to
[310]
20 billion dollars hey everyone it's me
[313]
real life nick from found and explained
[316]
has anyone else watched this video and
[319]
realized that they're
[320]
actually using the gladiator theme song
[324]
yes the one from the film um from
[327]
way back when it's really strange to
[331]
just hear that
[333]
you know just taken and totally ripped
[336]
off i'm sure they didn't get permission
[337]
but
[338]
anyway back to the video after the c919
[342]
we have the c929
[344]
or the craic cr929
[349]
this aircraft has two names because
[351]
there's actually a joint venture between
[353]
comac and the russian united aircraft
[357]
corporation
[357]
or uac this aircraft is an attempt to
[360]
replicate the success of the airbus a330
[364]
and the boeing 787 this aircraft would
[367]
fit up to 291 passengers
[370]
with two classes or 440 passengers in a
[374]
single seating class
[376]
or it could even fit all of my current
[378]
subscribers
[379]
so if you want to get on this chinese
[381]
plane with me hit that subscribe button
[383]
down below and i'll be sure to send you
[385]
a ticket
[386]
anyway back to the plane there will be
[388]
three versions of this plane with
[390]
progressively more seats
[392]
for less range speaking of range this
[395]
plane will
[396]
have a default range of 6480 nautical
[399]
miles
[400]
or 12 000 kilometers with the two
[403]
partners believed that they will sell
[405]
around a
[405]
thousand of these aircraft over the next
[408]
10 to 20 years
[409]
for an investment of 13 to 20 billion
[412]
dollars
[413]
the last the most recent news from the
[415]
camp is that progress has slowed down
[418]
and the first delivery to customers has
[420]
been pushed back to 2029
[423]
whilst we don't know the real reasons
[426]
the head of the russian
[427]
effort admitted it it was to do with
[430]
international cooperation
[432]
so i'll let you read into that in your
[434]
own time
[442]
now for the last and most significant of
[444]
these aircraft
[446]
is the mysterious c939
[449]
now very little is known about this
[451]
aircraft or
[452]
it will even be built in the age of
[454]
boeing's 747 retirings and airbus a380
[458]
production line
[459]
shutting down what we do know is that
[462]
the c939 will seat over 400 passengers
[466]
in a twin engine twin aisle
[468]
configuration
[469]
much like the biggest triple 7x in the
[472]
airbus
[473]
a350 it could even be expanded to the
[476]
same
[476]
size of the boeing 747 although at this
[479]
point
[479]
many of those ideas may be irrelevant
[481]
because outside of china
[483]
they may find few customers part of the
[486]
reason why chinese made aircraft are not
[488]
popular
[489]
is because of the engines at the moment
[492]
china can't produce the same level of
[494]
quality jet engines for all of these
[496]
projects
[497]
so far they have been working with ge
[499]
rolls royce and
[500]
others to power and make these planes
[503]
fly
[504]
and it doesn't just stop with the
[506]
engines comac is also working with
[508]
french designers to build the interior
[511]
of these planes right down to the
[513]
lavatories
[514]
plus if you're an airline and you order
[516]
this aircraft
[518]
how will you maintain them china doesn't
[520]
yet have
[521]
a worldwide spanning maintenance and
[523]
parts network
[524]
that airlines can easily access unless
[527]
you're on the border of the nation it
[529]
will be very expensive to operate these
[531]
aircraft and likely you will suffer the
[533]
same fate as interjet
[535]
as they did with their russian-made
[537]
regional jets
[539]
lastly each of these aircraft need to be
[541]
certified in each country in region
[544]
around the world a very long process
[546]
from an unproven company
[548]
and for a brand new plane type these
[551]
hurdles that will take them a long time
[554]
to overcome
[555]
but we'll eventually overcome them
[558]
those that have watched this video and
[560]
have laughed about this
[561]
attempt should remember that boeing also
[564]
wants laughed at airbus
[566]
and look at them now if you enjoyed this
[569]
exploration of the comac range
[571]
and what to expect in the future then
[574]
check out my other videos about soviet
[576]
and russian aircraft
[579]
pop in stay a while subscribe and enjoy
[583]
all things never built
[587]
thanks so much for watching
