[7]
greetings my beautiful lovelies it's
[9]
emmy welcome back to another gadget test
[11]
today i'm going to be testing out a
[12]
little find that i found at my local a
[15]
thrift store and this is this gem
[18]
and this is a twinkies
[21]
maker now if you're not familiar with
[23]
twinkies twinkies are made by the
[25]
hostess company they are a little kind
[27]
of tube of fluffy yellow chiffon cake
[31]
filled with a cream filling you open it
[34]
up and inside you've got this white
[36]
fluffy cream
[38]
now
[39]
there is a cult following when it comes
[41]
to twinkies i personally didn't grow up
[43]
eating them much i can count on one hand
[45]
how many times i've had a twinkie in
[47]
fact i think all the times i really had
[49]
them have been on this show if you
[51]
follow me at all on social media you
[53]
know that last week i went to the thrift
[54]
store which i often do because i love
[57]
hunting for treasures i have made other
[59]
things with finds that i found at the
[60]
thrift store including a thrift store
[62]
bread maker a thrift store ice cream
[65]
maker and i paid 6.99 for it i'm going
[68]
to remove this sticker because once this
[70]
gets hot this is probably going to
[72]
stick permanently
[74]
and turn dark so pretty good deal so
[77]
this was manufactured several years ago
[79]
let's see if there's a date on here
[81]
there is not
[82]
this seems to be an excellent condition
[85]
it still has the original little twist
[88]
tie on it it still has the cap on the
[91]
plug
[92]
and we open it inside it doesn't even
[94]
look like oops
[96]
it doesn't look like it was ever used
[99]
so this did not come in its original box
[100]
and did not include a recipe manual
[103]
instruction manual but when i posted
[105]
this on facebook
[107]
many of you beautiful lovelies chimed in
[109]
that you too had one of these machines
[111]
and then sent me copies of your
[114]
instruction manual so that was
[115]
absolutely wonderful i remember
[117]
distinctly as a child seeing a twin pack
[120]
of twinkies that you could purchase them
[121]
like that at the grocery store because
[123]
they were always next to the chocolate
[124]
cupcakes which were my favorite i would
[126]
always get the hostess chocolate
[128]
cupcakes never even
[130]
bothered with the twinkies because
[131]
there's no chocolate involved but i
[132]
remember seeing the twin pack
[134]
but when i went to the grocery store all
[135]
i could find is a 10 pack no little
[138]
twinsies none of that maybe at a
[140]
convenience store i don't know twinkie
[142]
experts chime in tell me tell me do you
[144]
can you not get the little twinnies
[146]
anymore
[147]
i don't know okay let's make the batter
[149]
shall we one stick of room temperature
[152]
butter i cut this up so it would
[155]
warm up
[156]
faster and we're going to cream that
[158]
with some sugar all right spatula
[163]
so that's a half cup
[166]
cup of sugar blend this together with a
[168]
hand mixer here we go it's gonna be a
[170]
little loud
[172]
whoa take it easy
[175]
that's one
[176]
that seems a bit fast
[183]
one egg yolk look at that beautiful
[187]
oops
[188]
into
[189]
there
[190]
all of you in there
[195]
okay let's use
[196]
this okay
[199]
and then we're gonna add two eggs
[202]
also at room temperature
[207]
one
[208]
two
[209]
two teaspoons of vanilla
[212]
one
[216]
beat that all together
[222]
one and a half cups of all-purpose flour
[230]
half teaspoon of salt boop
[234]
and
[239]
baking powder
[240]
how much baking powder
[243]
one teaspoon of baking powder
[246]
baking powder
[247]
so long look how much soda was the
[249]
powder
[251]
oh under the marmite
[253]
one teaspoon of baking powder blend this
[256]
a bit and then i'm going to add my
[258]
three-quarter of a cup of milk
[269]
the rest of this we can just
[271]
use the spatula for okay so now we're
[274]
going to preheat
[276]
the maker and when it turns green it is
[278]
ready so let that go and i think to make
[282]
this easier to fill
[284]
i'm going to use a pastry bag with no
[287]
tip i'm going to clip the end with a
[289]
clip here
[290]
keep everything from going all over the
[292]
place hopefully and just going to fill
[294]
this up
[298]
i think this will just make things
[299]
easier
[300]
especially since i'm going to be filling
[302]
my twinkies with some interesting
[304]
fillings i'm going to do the original of
[306]
course which is just the cream filling
[308]
but i thought why not have a little bit
[310]
of fun
[311]
so i think putting the batter in a
[313]
piping bag will help
[315]
with that process
[317]
this is not turned green yet
[320]
oh
[321]
it turned green thank you twinkie maker
[324]
okay
[325]
i've got some oil and a silicone brush
[328]
and i'm going to very well
[331]
oil everything here
[336]
this looks like it's a non-stick coating
[339]
but
[340]
the instructions say specifically to
[344]
oil everything down so oiling i am
[347]
so i've got some fillings that i've
[348]
already prepared i'm going to do a hot
[350]
dog twinkie i'm going to do a pizza
[352]
twinkie i'm going to do a snickers
[353]
twinkie i'm just going to fill this up
[359]
i'm just going to do three plain
[362]
this one right here
[364]
a piece of hot dog right in the middle
[368]
cover it with more
[370]
batter then i'm going to do another one
[374]
half
[376]
and put a piece of string cheese in the
[378]
middle and that will be my pizza one
[381]
along with some of these tiny itty bitty
[383]
pepperonis
[385]
right here look at these pepperonis
[386]
aren't they the cutest
[388]
a little bit more batter
[394]
a quarter for snickers bar right in the
[396]
middle
[398]
top it with more batter
[401]
now we're supposed to close this and
[402]
cook it four to seven minutes i'm going
[405]
to check it after four minutes to see
[407]
how they're doing we're going to use a
[408]
toothpick and when it comes out clean we
[410]
know that our little cakes are ready
[412]
okay see in a few minutes ah shut up
[417]
okay that was four minutes let's check
[419]
on them
[421]
oh look how much they've puffed up and
[423]
cooked okay let's give this a little
[424]
poke
[427]
definitely oh i poked the hot dog i
[429]
think
[430]
yeah they still feel a little bit soft
[432]
in the middle so let's give these a
[434]
couple more minutes six minutes
[437]
alrighty let's take a look at these
[439]
these are definitely feeling cake-like
[441]
when i watched videos of people trying
[443]
to take these out there was a bit of a
[445]
struggle but i think there's an easy
[446]
answer i'm gonna unplug this rather than
[450]
struggling and trying to get these out
[452]
and
[452]
risk messing my twinkies up i'm going to
[455]
close this up turn it upside down
[457]
oh
[458]
one perfect twinkie
[460]
yes i feel like the count so i'm going
[462]
to transfer that to my baking tray
[467]
two perfect twinkie ah yes
[473]
[Applause]
[478]
okay where's my toothpick
[480]
this one wants to come out just a little
[482]
bit of coaxing here
[490]
three
[491]
perfect twinkie
[494]
this is great these are actually turning
[496]
out better than i expected
[500]
okay
[502]
now i'm transferring them
[504]
to oh yes
[508]
oh no now these are all mixed up now i
[510]
don't know which ones are which
[512]
wow this is going to be a little bit
[513]
like twinkie roulette or something
[517]
so this one was
[520]
a snickers bar they look pretty stinking
[522]
great i'm impressed
[524]
[Music]
[527]
all right now we're going to prepare our
[528]
filling i've got three tablespoons of
[530]
room temperature butter
[532]
along with an equal amount
[534]
of shortening
[536]
cream these together
[538]
now we're going to slowly add one cup of
[540]
powdered sugar
[545]
we're going to beat this for two minutes
[551]
okay now we're gonna gradually add one
[553]
cup of corn syrup
[557]
that was a lot
[562]
okay i think that's our
[564]
filling
[565]
it's kind of a cross between a frosting
[568]
and an icing although
[569]
it is a little closer to a frosting
[572]
whenever i think of the filling inside
[575]
of a twinkie though i think of something
[576]
really light and fluffy a little bit
[578]
more like whipped cream well this seems
[580]
a little bit more like a seven minute
[583]
icing really
[585]
so apparently this machine came with a
[588]
cream filler but i'm going to use a
[590]
piping bag a little round tip as a
[592]
substitution
[594]
it should work out just fine
[598]
okay now for the fun part we're going to
[600]
fill the cakes so here is an original
[603]
twinkie you can see that the cream has
[605]
been injected in three spots at the
[607]
bottom of the cake so i'm gonna do the
[609]
same thing
[610]
with my piping bag here i'm gonna use a
[613]
chopstick and kind of
[615]
pre-drill some holes here
[619]
these already feel pretty different than
[621]
the original ones i just squeezed
[622]
original ones which feel very soft and
[624]
these have a bit of a harder crust to
[626]
them i'm actually going to use the back
[628]
of the chopstick to kind of widen the
[631]
hole a bit
[632]
so that the
[634]
pastry tip will actually fit i'm going
[636]
to inject
[638]
some cream in there
[646]
can't really tell when it fills up
[650]
so i'm just giving it a good squeeze
[652]
scrape some of that excess off
[655]
and there is a filled
[657]
twinkie so for the next one i'm going to
[660]
add some sliced strawberries
[664]
see if i can fit a piece of strawberry
[666]
in there
[671]
the strawberry is basically filling the
[673]
hole
[674]
so i'm gonna make holes in between
[677]
to put the cream
[679]
inject
[682]
inject and finally we have our pizza one
[684]
so for that one and i'm gonna fill it
[686]
with a little bit of pizza sauce
[694]
so there we have it five different
[695]
twinkies pizza
[698]
hot dog
[700]
snickers
[701]
strawberry shortcake
[703]
and original
[705]
yay a little star of custom twinkies now
[709]
let's go ahead and give these a taste
[711]
so if you compare side by side the
[713]
homemade version is a little bit
[714]
narrower a little bit shorter
[717]
but pretty similar color
[720]
but immediately i noticed there's a
[721]
difference in texture the original
[724]
twinkie is much softer and feels a
[726]
little bit lighter
[728]
and
[729]
the homemade one is a little bit
[730]
crunchier break open the original to
[732]
show you what it looks like inside
[735]
there is the classic very white
[737]
frosting in the middle actually it's
[739]
more like a cream it's very light
[742]
let's give that a taste here we go
[743]
itadakimasu
[753]
very sweet
[754]
light
[755]
fluffy texture with a cream filling
[757]
that's
[758]
more like cool whip
[760]
it's fluffy and kind of sweet a little
[762]
bit of vanilla i almost taste a kind of
[765]
lemon chiffon
[767]
flavor but i don't think there's any
[769]
lemon in here just my imagination but it
[771]
has the texture of chiffon cake very
[773]
fluffy with a little bit of a chew to it
[776]
and the filling is very very soft and
[779]
fluffy a little bit sticky
[783]
very sweet
[785]
with a slight vanilla flavor to it
[788]
so there's the cake very very tender
[790]
let's compare that with the cream filled
[792]
homemade version now let's break this
[794]
open and see how we did in the middle
[800]
oh
[803]
not much of a cream filling definitely
[805]
doesn't look like the original in terms
[806]
of having it nice and centered and
[809]
fluffy and present this one has a kind
[812]
of goopier texture it's a little more
[814]
transparent it's not so opaque and white
[816]
and bright
[818]
so
[819]
let's give this a taste here we go
[826]
so it both tastes and feels very very
[828]
different the cake crumb is much denser
[830]
although it is like a yellow cake but
[832]
compared to the original which is much
[833]
more like a chiffon or an angel food
[836]
cake which is really really light
[838]
this is much more like a yellow cake
[840]
denser and almost has the consistency of
[842]
cornbread because the outside is kind of
[844]
crunchy
[848]
i shouldn't say crunchy but it has more
[849]
of a kind of baked in a little bit more
[852]
like when you have a brownie edge it's
[853]
just a little bit more cooked on the
[855]
outside and the filling is completely
[857]
different completely different texture
[860]
and in terms of a textural experience
[861]
you don't really notice it at all it
[863]
tastes a little bit extra sweetness but
[865]
there's not this kind of light fluffy
[866]
interior
[868]
like you have in the original very very
[870]
different not unpleasant it's tasty it's
[872]
just not really a twinkie let's try the
[874]
strawberry shortcake one let's open that
[877]
one up
[881]
filling is a little bit disappointing
[883]
there is some strawberry in there but
[884]
can't really see it in cross-section but
[887]
let's give it a go
[892]
i like that really classic combination
[895]
again the texture of the cake is wrong
[897]
but that combination of sweetness
[899]
strawberry cake yum
[902]
now let's try this one which is our
[904]
pizza one i'm gonna cut this one because
[905]
it has some cheese in it so let's see
[907]
how we did
[911]
that actually is pretty funny so we've
[913]
got a melted layer of cheese we've got a
[914]
little bit of pepperoni and a little
[916]
injection of sauce let's give that one a
[919]
go
[925]
definitely flavors of pizza we've got
[926]
mozzarella cheese pepperoni
[929]
a little bit of sauce
[930]
and that
[931]
crust part
[933]
tastes like sweet cornbread it's
[935]
actually a great combination
[937]
a little dry though i think a little
[939]
more sauce would be better let's try the
[940]
hot dog version
[943]
[Laughter]
[946]
not quite centered but there definitely
[947]
is a hot dog in the middle all right
[949]
let's give that a go
[955]
mmm
[957]
that's great that's actually my favorite
[958]
one so far that's like a corn dog
[963]
the cake is not too sweet and actually
[965]
goes really really well with a salty
[967]
hot dog in the middle great great great
[969]
great little hush puppy corn doggy thing
[973]
i love it and this one got a little bit
[975]
crisp on the bottom here really great
[977]
textural contrast a little bit of
[978]
crispiness
[981]
alrighty so here is the snickers bar
[983]
version okay let's cut that one
[987]
now that's the satisfying center look at
[989]
that kind of melted kind of gooey
[992]
i could see a little bit of the
[993]
chocolate coming through okay i like the
[995]
amount of filling in there and i like
[998]
that it's centered okay let's give this
[999]
one a go
[1005]
[Music]
[1007]
i'm a huge snickers bar fan so there's
[1010]
no reason why i wouldn't like this
[1013]
the proportion of cake to chocolate bar
[1016]
is perfect in there
[1017]
love this one this one and the hot dog
[1019]
one are definitely my favorite your
[1020]
ultimate goal is to actually create
[1022]
something that is similar to a twinkie
[1024]
in terms of texture and flavor it
[1025]
doesn't really do it doesn't make little
[1027]
cake bars that are fun to cook up and
[1028]
fill it yes most definitely could also
[1030]
use this to make little omelets i can
[1032]
imagine little omelet sticks or
[1033]
something like that thank you guys so
[1035]
much for joining me i hope you guys
