The Best QQQ Strategy That I Tested in 2020 and 2021 - YouTube
Channel: Mark Ursell
[0]
I often get asked what is the best QQQ/Nasdaq聽
100 strategy that i have tested - well in this聽聽
[6]
video i'm going to look at the three best trading聽
strategies that i have tested in 2020 and 2021聽聽
[15]
I'm Mark from Tradinformed.com and if you like聽
this video please don't forget to hit the like聽聽
[20]

want more content like this about analyzing聽聽
[26]
and back testing the financial markets i聽
have tested literally hundreds of different聽聽
[32]
trading strategies and the qqq has been one聽
of the best performing markets not just in聽聽
[39]
terms of the overall return although this has聽
been very good but in terms of the smoothness聽聽
[45]
of the price action and what this means聽
is that it is easier for mechanical and聽聽
[51]
discretionary traders to trade, we get less false聽
signals which means we get more winning trades聽聽
[60]
in this video i am going to cover how I compared聽
the strategies including the metrics that i think聽聽
[66]
are the most important i'm going to cover each聽
strategy and show you exactly how to trade them聽聽
[74]
i'm going to show you how i tested each strategy聽
the results that i got and also my thoughts about聽聽
[82]
each strategy so stay tuned so how have i compared聽
these strategies and why have i chosen these聽聽
[90]
three, well there's loads of great metrics out聽
there but i have chosen three for this analysis聽聽
[97]
number one the MAR ratio the MAR ratio is compound聽
annual growth rate divided by maximum drawdown聽聽
[106]
so as a single metric to compare strategies it聽
is very powerful compound annual growth rate聽聽
[113]
includes our overall net profit as a function聽
of time and maximum drawdown shows how much pain聽聽
[121]
we have felt in following this trading strategy聽
number two the win-loss ratio this may seem like聽聽
[129]
a very simple way to compare strategies but聽
it is absolutely crucial for our psychology聽聽
[136]
in terms of implementing the strategy you can聽
get a strategy with 95 winning trades that you聽聽
[143]
cannot follow because the drawdowns for those 5聽
of losing trades are too high equally a strategy聽聽
[150]
with only 20 winning trades can be easy to follow聽
if you're comfortable holding on to your winning聽聽
[158]
trades - it's all about how your psychology聽
works and number three average trade expectancy聽聽
[167]
now this is a way to measure how much profit we聽
can get in terms of the underlying market per聽聽
[175]
trade so this makes a difference because cost of聽
trading is a factor that many of us don't consider聽聽
[182]
so the higher average trade expectancy is the聽
lower our cost of trading per trade will be聽聽
[191]
let's have a look at the three trading strategies聽
strategy number one is the renko strategy renko is聽聽
[199]
a japanese charting system that uses price聽
instead of time to calculate the bars now聽聽
[206]
i am using it as a filter the strategy is very聽
simple trade in the direction of the renko bricks聽聽
[214]
and enter on a daily retracement strategy number聽
two is the stochastic strategy now this uses the聽聽
[223]
stochastic oscillator as the entry signal we enter聽
when the stochastic oscillator crosses above the聽聽
[231]
entry level now i'm using two entry levels in聽
this strategy and i will show you what they are聽聽
[238]
later there is a supplementary filter to聽
this strategy and that is only enter when聽聽
[244]
the ratio of the closing price divided by the ATR聽
is lower than three percent and the logic for this聽聽
[253]
is that we only trading long trades so we only聽
want to enter when volatility is relatively聽聽
[260]
low the third strategy is the two ema strategies聽
and this is to enter when the price crosses above聽聽
[270]
the three period ema and it is also above the 13聽
period ema next i am going to look at how i tested聽聽
[279]
the strategies and the results that i got on the聽
screen is aTradinformed backtest model it is built聽聽
[287]
in excel and this particular model was created聽
for Tradinformed members so i'm going to briefly聽聽
[294]
show you what you can do with this model firstly i聽
have each of the three strategies i have the renko聽聽
[301]
i have the stochastic and i have the two聽
ema strategies so you can switch between聽聽
[308]
the different strategies just using the check聽
box here you can test different profit targets聽聽
[316]
you can use different ways and see how the results聽
change in real time you can test different markets聽聽
[324]
i'm testing on the QQQ but you can very easily聽
test this on the spy the TQQQ or any market聽聽
[333]
that you wish we've got different exit conditions聽
and over here in real time we have the strategy聽聽
[340]
results so if you want more information about聽
how to use Tradinformed backtest models there聽聽
[346]
is a link on the screen and below this video聽
so please check that out for more information聽聽
[352]
let's have a look at the individual strategies聽
firstly renko you can see for each strategy聽聽
[358]
i have programmed in some different variables so聽
for renko the key one is the bar or brick size聽聽
[364]
so i've set this to 20 we can easily聽
change this to test different values
[373]
and you can see again the results adjusting聽
in real-time so I'm going to set this back聽聽
[379]
to 20 per cent now we can also adjust the profit聽
target so I'm using a fairly tight profit target聽聽
[387]
of just six per cent stop loss of two per cent聽
and a trailing stop a chandelier style trailing聽聽
[394]
stop of three per cent I'm also using some exit聽
conditions now these are excellent conditions聽聽
[404]
that I've worked on over time and I really like聽
so we've got two different exit conditions you聽聽
[411]
can see them in a lot of my models and strategies聽
firstly I'm using them for all three strategies聽聽
[418]
close after a number of bars if the trade is in聽
profit so we're going to give the trade a decent聽聽
[424]
a number of bars and if it's in profit and we聽
haven't and it hasn't hit our targets then we're聽聽
[431]
going to exit it so it's a type of inactivity stop聽
secondly we're using what I call a strength close聽聽
[439]
but the difference is for this one we're聽
using it for only when the trade is in loss
[446]
so all that means is two consecutive bars of聽
at least this gain close to close we will exit聽聽
[454]
the trade and I'll explain more about that聽
in a moment so we have Renko if i check this聽聽
[461]
box here we can have a look at stochastic聽
now the stochastic was probably the most聽聽
[467]
versatile in terms of working聽
for a number of different
[474]
settings and setups you can see we're getting聽
pretty good results in terms of the MAR聽聽
[479]
ratio down here in terms of net profit percentage聽
winning trades for all of these different setups聽聽
[488]
so I found a very tight trading stop working聽
well which shows you that the entry conditions聽聽
[495]
are quite sharp so we were able to use聽
a tight trailing stop and stop-loss
[502]
so finally let's have a look at the聽
stochastic look back period I'm using聽聽
[506]
five bars it's not essential to use five聽
but a shorter period tended to work better聽聽
[514]
although a longer period will also give decent聽
results so I'm going to keep it at five there my聽聽
[522]
stochastic entry levels I told you I'm using聽
two different levels now you don't have to聽聽
[528]
you could just set one of these to zero聽
and we're only testing one, in fact,聽聽
[533]
that's a good way to check the range of values聽
but I've found two giving a better set of results
[546]
now the EMA strategy i've used聽
a different reward to risk聽聽
[552]
profile for my two ema聽
strategy I'm using this time
[560]
a profit target of three and a stop loss聽聽
[563]
of 100 and all this effectively means聽
is that that stop loss is not active聽聽
[570]
so only the profit target is active here聽
however we have these other exit conditions
[581]
so we haven't got very many聽聽
[585]
variables for this strategy we've only got聽
two so we've got a 3 and a 13-period EMA
[595]
just sticking to the Fibonacci numbers you can聽
see we're going to get different profiles you see聽聽
[600]
if we keep ema two longer it's going to act as聽
more of a filter if i push that out to 35 we're聽聽
[609]
getting a lower net profit but still decent MAR聽
ratio so the strategy is working successfully for聽聽
[619]
a range of values again now the exit conditions聽
are more significant here because we're not using聽聽
[626]
a traditional stop loss so we only want the trade聽
to go on for a short while if it is in profit and聽聽
[636]
we want the trade to exit any time we have a聽
little bump up and even if we're in loss or rather聽聽
[642]
when we're in loss a couple of days that's showing聽
a reasonable daily gain then we're going to exit聽聽
[648]
that trade on the screen i have the combined聽
results of each of the three strategies you can聽聽
[653]
see that renko and stochastic are returning聽
very similar results and the EMA strategy聽聽
[660]
is returning a different profile of results we've聽
got a much higher percentage of winning trades聽聽
[666]
and we've still got a good MAR ratio and a higher聽
average trade expectancy i said at the start聽聽
[672]
of this video i was going to give my thoughts on聽
each of these three strategies because the numbers聽聽
[678]
never tells the full story firstly renko it is聽
easy to follow if like most people you have a聽聽
[687]
job and other commitments this is as easy as聽
it gets all you need to be looking for is a聽聽
[693]
close lower than the previous close and then you聽
enter the trade this system relies on renko bars聽聽
[703]
now these are a price based system and they聽
are different but now difficult for most of us聽聽
[710]
who are used to candlesticks standard weekly聽
daily five minute bars to get used to so you聽聽
[717]
need to be aware that this is a price based bar聽
system and it is more difficult to conceptualize聽聽
[727]
the stochastic strategy this is probably聽
the most versatile of the three strategy聽聽
[733]
it works well with a wide range of settings and聽
i like that it makes it feel a lot more robust聽聽
[742]
however this strategy is in the market a lot so聽聽
[745]
if and when we get a downturn this聽
strategy will get us into that downturn聽聽
[753]
the two ema strategies firstly number one the聽
great win loss ratio this is fantastic for people聽聽
[762]
who like a lot of winning trades and most of us聽
do but because we have no stop loss this strategy聽聽
[771]
you're going to spend time with trades that are聽
underwater that are losing and you have to be聽聽
[776]
patient at those times because the strategy has聽
systems to get out when the market bounces back聽聽
[785]
also for the two ema strategy there's not as聽
many trades as the other strategies now this聽聽
[791]
can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on聽
your perspective it can be a good thing if you聽聽
[797]
like to be patient wait for the best setup and聽
if you're impatient quite clearly this could be聽聽
[803]
a negative because you're going to want more聽
action trade a strategy that is appropriate聽聽
[810]
for you i hope you enjoyed this video聽
