[0]
today therefore I'm calling on President
[2]
Trump to abandon his lawsuit seeking to
[5]
strike down the Affordable Care Act
[6]
instead the president should urge the 14
[9]
states who have refused to expand
[12]
Medicaid to do so last Thursday Pope
[16]
Francis offered the world this prayer
[18]
enlighten those responsible for the
[21]
common good so that they might know how
[24]
to care for those entrusted to their
[26]
responsibilities today House Democrats
[29]
are unveiling that take responsibility
[31]
for workers and Families Act a bill that
[34]
takes responsibility for the health
[36]
wages and well-being of America's
[38]
workers Democrats take responsibility
[41]
for our workers who require that any
[43]
corporation that takes taxpayer dollars
[46]
must protect their workers wages and
[48]
benefits not CEO pay stock buybacks or
[52]
layouts we strengthen unemployment
[54]
insurance though that it can replace the
[56]
average wages of our workers who are
[59]
losing their jobs and ours for our small
[62]
businesses we provide fast relief with
[65]
grants and loans to tide them through
[67]
this crisis for our doctors nurses
[69]
health care workers and first
[70]
respondent's responders in hospitals and
[73]
other health institutions we provide
[75]
desperately needed funds to care for
[77]
those who are sick and too sure that our
[80]
providers have personal protective
[83]
equipment PPE that they need we protect
[87]
our health care workers by requiring the
[89]
administration to enforce our stronger
[92]
OSHA protections for our families we
[95]
give direct payments to America's
[96]
families in a robust way and strengthen
[99]
the child tax credits and the Earned
[101]
Income Tax Credit we give more workers
[103]
the security of guaranteed paid family
[106]
and medical leave including those caring
[109]
for our seniors and we make the
[111]
coronavirus treatment free for the
[113]
patient for our students we provide
[115]
emergency funds for our schools and
[117]
universities we help current borrowers
[121]
with their student debt burden and the
[123]
GI bill benefits we bolster snap and
[126]
other initiatives to address
[128]
insecurity for our democracy we ensure
[131]
that states can carry out this year's
[133]
election and require early voting and
[135]
vote by mail I'm grateful to our
[137]
committee chairs and members for their
[140]
extraordinary leadership and work for
[142]
America's workers and families the
[145]
Senate Republican bill put corporations
[147]
first but because of the insistence of
[149]
Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate
[151]
Democrats progress has been made we urge
[154]
the sem the Senate to move closer to the
[157]
values in the take responsibility for
[159]
workers and Families Act must be bold
[163]
and for looking in our thinking
[165]
remember swift and evidence-based in our
[167]
actions and we must be prayerful god
[170]
bless the families of those who've lost
[172]
loved ones and those fighting this
[174]
terrible illness now god blesses our
[176]
nurses doctors first responders and men
[178]
and women in uniform
[179]
god bless the men and women in our
[181]
factories making medical supplies cars
[184]
all of it and those keeping our grocery
[186]
shelves stocked with food
[188]
god bless the scientists racing to find
[190]
a cure god bless all of you and may God
[194]
always bus america thank you thank you
[204]
speaker Pelosi just wrapping up Garrett
[206]
Haake let's go back to you take us
[208]
inside the politics here how about this
[210]
sure the point of that well this is an
[213]
opportunity for Democrats to show what
[215]
their priorities are in this crisis
[217]
given the absence of a compromise bill
[219]
in the Senate Pelosi said a couple days
[221]
ago that the house would offer its own
[222]
alternative when she wasn't satisfied
[225]
with what was being discussed on the
[226]
Senate side there you late saw her lay
[228]
some of it out the house is not in
[230]
session right now the house could not
[232]
vote on this bill tomorrow or probably
[233]
the next day or the next day even if
[235]
they wanted to and I think what you're
[237]
seeing here is Democrats believe they
[239]
have leverage here Republicans don't
[241]
even have 50 votes in the Senate where
[243]
they are in the majority right now
[244]
because some of their members are
[246]
quarantined they are trying to find
[248]
their way through a solution and
[249]
Democrats believe they have some
[251]
political leverage here to control the
[253]
response here and the way they would
[254]
like to see it performed and to get some
[256]
of their priorities across the finish
[257]
line
[258]
there is a political danger of
[260]
overreaching here and I think that's
[261]
what you're seeing play out in the
[262]
Senate floor where Democrats are being
[264]
criticized for things like including
[266]
cancellation of student debt which you
[268]
could argue is not a part of the
[269]
coronavirus crisis things like you heard
[271]
the speaker they're talking about
[272]
election security and vote-by-mail which
[274]
is a very interesting issue for all of
[276]
us who've been covering the connection
[278]
between the virus and electoral politics
[281]
but arguably not an urgent crisis in
[283]
March and so I think this is the walk
[286]
that the line the Democrats are going to
[288]
be walking here is do they press their
[290]
and political advantage as they see it
[292]
to get the most favorable terms possible
[294]
out of a Senate bill or do they press
[296]
too far and risk being blamed by the
[298]
public for slowing down a bill that is
[301]
widely agreed to be urgently needed out
[304]
in the rest of the country
