Leadership | 5 Types of Leadership Styles (with Examples) - YouTube
Channel: Your Unlocked Potential - Organizational Psych.
[0]
Anyone can be a leader.
[2]
Whether at work or in your daily lives.
[4]
When you tell someone to order a pizza, or
teach your kid how to read.
[8]
You are displaying leadership qualities.
[10]
It’s all about the situation and the type
of leadership styles.
[13]
So, what are types of leadership?
[16]
What are the advantages and disadvantages
of each style?
[19]
It’s Your Unlocked Potential and this week,
we’ll talk about leadership improvement.
[23]
Let’s go!
[24]
[INTRO MUSIC]
[32]
Before we start, I want to clarify that the
[34]
leadership styles we’re going to talk about
are the approaches
[37]
a leader would use to influence
[39]
or guide their followers toward
[40]
a particular goal or objective.
[43]
These five types of leadership styles are
different from the six EMOTIONAL leadership
[47]
styles that affect people’s emotions and
team atmosphere,
[51]
which we will talk about in another video.

[59]
OK, without wasting any more time, let’s
start.
[62]
Number one
[63]
Transactional Leadership
[64]
Transactional leadership is considered conservative
[67]
or traditional.
[68]
Like the name suggests, transactional leadership is
[71]
"I give you this and you give me that."
[74]
A transactional leader would give an instruction,
and it is expected that the team members perform
[78]
the tasks accordingly.
[80]
Managers are famous for using this type of
leadership.
[84]
This style is also called
exceptional leadership, because it’s the
[87]
exceptional ones that are rewarded or punished.
[90]
If you did well, then you’re rewarded.
[92]
If you did poorly, you’re punished or receive no reward.
[95]
An example of this would be telling your friends
to order a pizza.
[98]
If they succeeded in ordering a pizza, the
reward is that you all get to have dinner.
[103]
If not, the punishment is that you and your
friends go hungry.
[107]
The leader may seem impersonal,
as this style is very direct.
[111]
But the benefit of this leadership style is
that the instructions are clear, therefore
[115]
there is less chance of misunderstanding or
confusion.
[119]
However, they may find it hard
to gain the trust of their followers and may
[123]
limit their followers’ creativity.
[125]
Number two
[127]
Transformational Leadership
[128]
Like the name suggests again, this type of
[130]
leadership focuses on transforming the people
they lead.
[134]
The leader sees the potential in people, and
they want to bring out those potential for
[138]
their own benefits (the followers themselves)
and for the company or organization.
[144]
They often allow the people to have more freedom,
and they encourage more creativity and innovation.
[149]
This approach focuses on personal strengths
and weaknesses and deal with them accordingly.
[154]
A transformational leader also leads by example.
[157]
As a result, this kind of leader is often
considered to be inspiring or empowering.
[163]
An example of this is a music teacher who
thinks you’re better on the piano compared
[167]
to on the guitar, and want you find your strength
to make yourself shine.
[173]
As a transformational leader, you will often
encourage people to step out of their comfort
[177]
zone and push their limit.
[179]
This type of leadership is good when both
the leader
[182]
and the followers have the same goal
[185]
The disadvantage of this leadership style
is that conflict may arise as when changes
[189]
take place, since everyone will have a different perspective
[192]
or an approach to manage those changes.
[195]
Number three
[197]
Servant Leadership
[198]
Instead of leading or inspiring, a servant
[201]
leader supports and guide the team’s effort.
[204]
They put the needs of their followers first,
and then their own needs second.
[209]
Servant leaders are very good at listening,
they're empathy, they're committed,
[213]
good at persuading and building a community.
[216]
Servant leaders are highly emotional intelligent,
[218]
because they are aware of other people’s needs.
[222]
Servant leaders are usually the one to start a movement
[225]
or support a good charity or a good cause.
[228]
Servant leadership allows working culture
to be very positive and the trust between
[232]
all team members to be strong.
[235]
This type of leadership is becoming more popular
over the years because the leaders make the
[239]
followers feel understood.
[242]
One disadvantage, however,
is that this type of leadership
[245]
puts priority on others too much,
[247]
and sometimes the leader may neglect their own needs.
[251]
Number four
[252]
Laissez-Faire Leadership
[253]
The term “laissez-faire” is the French
[255]
phrase for “leave it be”.
[257]
The laissez-faire leadership has an approach
that is very hands-off.
[261]
They often leave the team to perform their tasks
[264]
and let the teams manage themselves.
[266]
It uses the idea that most people hate to
be micromanaged.
[270]
Where micromanagement is your supervisor hovering
and asking for every detail,
[275]
laissez-faire leaders do not ask and trust that you will get the work done.
[279]
This type of leadership is often used in organizations
or teams
[283]
that have very well-established protocols and working system.
[287]
This type of leadership is actually very popular in IT setting,
[291]
the supervisors will not be asking to see every single written code
[294]
as the programmers are experts at what
they do.
[297]
They (the leader) perhaps just want a weekly update.
[300]
An advantage of this leadership is that trust
and independence allow the work to be performed
[305]
better, due to the lack of restrictions and
pressure.
[308]
However, if the protocols and working system
are not well established, teams may fall into
[313]
chaos as a leader is not around to supervise.
[316]
Also, laissez-faire leaders often feel absent,
because they leave the team to be.
[321]
Number five
[322]
Charismatic Leadership
[324]
A charismatic leader will use eloquent communication skills
[327]
to inspire their team members to work
towards objectives and visions.
[332]
Charisma leader will use compelling arguments
to attract or charm others into devotion.
[338]
They often persuade unity among the team members
by getting everyone excited
[343]
using well described vision and the end goal.
[346]
This type of leadership can be very inspiring
and boost the morale of team.
[350]
On the other hand, they may focus a lot on their charisma
[353]
and neglect important tasks or expertise.
[356]
Many followers may be blinded by the halo
effect and follow this type of leader with
[360]
bias, even with the leader is clearly wrong.
[372]
The halo effect, also known as the halo error,
[375]
is when you have a positive impression of
a person for one area
[378]
but it’s carried over to another area.
[381]
A simplified example of the halo effect is
when you see a good-looking person,
[385]
you are more likely to think that
person is also a nice person or a kind person.
[390]
This is a type of cognitive bias.
[393]
There are no good or bad leadership styles,
as they all have their benefits and drawbacks.
[398]
What is important is to know what leadership
style to use at the right time and at the
[402]
right circumstance.
[404]
Now that you know the 5 types of leadership
styles,
