Making Outdoor Vent Covers | JIMBO'S GARAGE - YouTube
Channel: JIMBO'S GARAGE
[3]
Welcome to Jimbo's Garage.
[9]
Good afternoon, everyone,
and welcome back to Jimbo's Garage.
[12]
Today's video,
[13]
we're going to be making some removable
vent covers for the exterior of the house.
[18]
The current covers that are on
this house are deteriorated
[21]
and the owners looking for something new.
[23]
So let's get started on today's video.
[28]
Today's video is sponsored by King Metals.
[30]
They've got all your fabrication needs
in one location from hinges to hardware,
[35]
blisters to melt the core brass
to aluminum and a whole lot more.
[41]
You name it, they've got it.
[42]
Check them out today at King Metals.com.
[45]
Now let's get back to today's video
[50]
All right.
[50]
So going over to my metal supply here,
and that keeps adding up
[55]
and keeps adding up.
[56]
I keep thinking
I'm going to get rid of it, but it just
[59]
I keep getting more and more projects
and no room to store it.
[62]
So for now, that's where it's going to be.
[65]
All right.
[65]
So for this particular project, we're
using some three quarter inch square tube.
[70]
This is one 20 wall.
[72]
And I'm over at the Evolution S3, 80 CPS.
[77]
You know, this this all right.
[78]
Here, I've got this one.
[80]
And I also have the 14 inch
as three 55 CPS l
[85]
they're pretty much the same store
this one here is got a 15 inch capacity.
[90]
I run a 14 inch blade on both of them
really good size.
[94]
Don't have any issues with them.
[96]
I haven't had any issues with them.
[98]
They work perfectly. You can see that
[101]
I really like the adjustment for the 45
and the different angles.
[104]
I even got some dedicated angles chair
where you can
[109]
you can adjust the the table right there
but I've also set my own angles
[113]
with some markers
and that easy adjustment.
[117]
All right after getting everything
all cut out,
[119]
what I'm going to be doing
is installing some thumb latches,
[123]
some spring loaded thumb
latches on the ends of this.
[126]
Now, you know, I try to think everything
through thoroughly
[129]
before I build the project.
[130]
And, you know, in this case,
[132]
I thought it would be best
that I just drill and tap these holes
[135]
prior to the assembly Well,
that's what I'm doing right here.
[138]
The thumb latches are quarter 20.
[140]
So this is a No.
[141]
Seven drill bit,
and it's roughly about an inch
[144]
and a half from that end on on either
side of both frames.
[150]
You know,
[152]
the funny thing is, so
I've had the KBC mail for about six months
[157]
now, and I just love the comments
in the comments section.
[160]
You know, I, I've got one guy that said
or several people said, Hey,
[163]
congratulations, good job.
[165]
And then I get another guy that says,
Yeah, I'll just going to drill small holes
[168]
with it.
[169]
That's, you know, I guess I got to agree.
[172]
I got to agree with them.
Sometimes it is that way.
[174]
I'm not a machinist
[176]
but I am starting to do a little bit
more milling projects on it, and it
[179]
is a lot of fun.
[181]
But for
now, this is what I'm using it for.
[184]
And I like the accuracy of it
and the way it performs.
[188]
It's it's
been a really nice addition to the shop.
[191]
All right.
[191]
So once I got the holes drilled out, it's
just the little,
[195]
little counter sink
right there to clean up the burrs.
[199]
And now I'm
going to get back over to the mill.
[202]
Now, this is the steam
reversing tapping had
[205]
you know,
I got this a while back for a project
[209]
I was doing at 100 holes to drill and tap,
and I didn't want to do it by hand.
[212]
So I did a little research.
[214]
I ended up getting this at KBC Tools.
[217]
Now, this is very similar
[220]
to the tap magic.
[222]
However, this is a little bit cheaper
[224]
and I decided to splurge
and get the 02 quarter inch.
[228]
That's what this size is here.
[230]
And then also the 56 to three quarter.
[233]
So I've got a pretty wide range of of
[237]
tapping capability
with these these tapping the edge.
[240]
You see how how
well they work. You just set them right in
[244]
but a lubrication,
[246]
just drive the handle down at Taps
and then just reverses out.
[250]
It does a great job for, you know,
tapping quickly like I said, you can do
[254]
100 holes fairly quick and accurately
with this tapping that pretty cool.
[260]
You don't use it all the time,
but when you need it, you need it
[265]
all right.
[266]
After all that's done,
[267]
now it's time for assembly number
here to the sort of flat welding table.
[271]
Got my table dog armor fixture clamps
and clamp and everything down, you know?
[276]
And again, I just I can't say enough
about being able to have the right tools
[280]
for the right job, you know,
between the table and the clamps.
[284]
You know, the smallest job like this
right here just makes it really easy.
[289]
You know, make a final adjustment here
with the square.
[291]
You can see
it doesn't take very long at all.
[293]
Once everything is adjusted
and the measurements are just right
[296]
and it's nice and square,
it just time to put it together.
[299]
Now, if you didn't have
all this capability,
[301]
we two or three or four times
longer to get everything just right.
[307]
All right.
[307]
A couple attacks on either side.
[309]
And once that's done, then just well,
[310]
as much as I can get rid of all the clamps
and stuff, nothing's going anywhere.
[314]
And then I'm just going to go ahead
and roll it out. Now, it's not much.
[317]
Three quarter inch square
tube doesn't take a lot to go around, but
[324]
but that's the way I like to do things.
[326]
And when this is all done, we're going to
we're going to get a flat district,
[329]
cleaned everything up
[332]
all right.
[333]
I'm working off the
HP proposals to 20 M.P.s.
[336]
That is my go to machine
for most things I do
[340]
it is spool with 35,000 wire
and I like to run
[345]
90 ten 90% argon 10% CO2
[348]
you know 75 25 works
well too it's just I've been using 90 ten,
[352]
I've been very happy with that
for the last three or four years.
[356]
It's worked out well for me
and for my machine for something
[360]
like this, an average is about 250
to 275 inches a minute.
[365]
That's what works
the best for me as kind of stays at that,
[369]
at that adjustment
for mostly everything I do,
[373]
you know, for the thinner wall stuff,
you might have to be a little bit careful
[376]
what you don't burn through,
but for the most part
[380]
it just works well for me
[384]
I got them all well enough
[387]
now to just get a flap disc, kind of grind
everything down, smooth everything up.
[391]
It is going to get powder coated.
[393]
So I do want it to look nice.
[395]
And for that, I'm using a ceramic Trimble
flap disc for Mercer here.
[400]
This is a 60 grit now.
[402]
You know, they make all kinds of
different grips here, you know, one 20,
[406]
60, I believe 36 and 24.
[409]
They've got a lot of different
[410]
varieties of grits
and I have them all and I do use them all.
[415]
But my go to is a 60.
[416]
I found that that works
the best for what I'm using it for.
[420]
Sometimes
[422]
you know,
[423]
if I'm painting it versus powder coating,
powder coatings a lot thicker.
[426]
And so it hides maybe the scratch marks
from the from the grinding down.
[432]
But if you're painting,
I've found this a little thinner
[436]
and sometimes I have to back this up
the 60
[439]
grit up with a one 20 and it smooths it
right out perfectly smooth.
[442]
So you know, all in all
this is something that I like to do
[446]
is just clean up the welts on mostly
everything I do.
[450]
I get a lot of people say you don't need
to do that at weekends project.
[453]
I've never had any issues
with any of the stuff that I've done
[455]
and I just think it makes for a cleaner
looking project.
[465]
All right.
[465]
And for the screen on this, we're
just going to be using some quarter inch
[471]
mesh that I had leftover from a project.
[473]
And that's another thing.
[474]
I hang on to everything.
[477]
Everything that I use, every piece
I hang on to.
[480]
You just never know
when you're going to use it for.
[482]
This stuff worked out perfect
for the project we're using right here.
[486]
This marked it all I can. You can tell.
[488]
It can tell us.
[489]
I've had it for a while.
[490]
It's a little rusted up, but,
you know, the rust is not a bad thing.
[494]
We'll get it all cleaned up
without a coat,
[497]
and I'm just using a I cut off.
[499]
We'll untangle, grind it right here.
[502]
I find that's the best way to cut it.
[503]
Nice clean job.
[505]
You can see right there that, you know,
I like to leave a little bit.
[509]
Not the exact size, a little shorter.
[511]
So I've got room for the well
to to fit on the fit on the square, too.
[521]
All right.
[521]
And these are these little spring loaded
thumb latches
[525]
I got from McMaster Carr
perfect for this project.
[529]
The length and everything is just right
quarter 20 and you can see that
[533]
now's the time.
[534]
I want to assembly these things
and put them in there.
[540]
Yeah.
[540]
Prior to you had been a little bit
[542]
more difficult to deal once
and all put together.
[544]
I'm fascinated by these thumb latches
that I'm amazed at
[547]
how perfect this this turned out.
[550]
You know, it didn't plan on.
[551]
I just ordered them.
And this is the way they came.
[554]
And it just worked perfect
with this three quarter inch square tube.
[558]
And that's one.
[559]
And then here is the other one right here.
[561]
You know, for the most part,
they all screwed in pretty good.
[565]
There was eight of them and all seven of
them did, except for this one right here.
[569]
There must have been a burger
or something in there.
[571]
I probably could have ran a tap
through there again and cleaned it up.
[574]
But, you know, it's just a quarter inch.
[576]
I just grabbed a quarter inch wrench
and it just screwed right in there
[579]
with no problem
[583]
and. All right.
[585]
For, well, in this thing together,
all I'm doing is just bump tacking this
[590]
about every two inches all the way around
and getting all the corners as well.
[594]
And that's about all you need.
[596]
And that turned out pretty good.
[597]
I'm really happy with the way that
turned out a good, clean little project.
[603]
All right.
[604]
That was a great little project.
I got to say.
[605]
I had a lot of fun building this up.
[607]
It was a good, really good design.
[609]
I really like the deep
the round pattern mesh that's behind this.
[615]
And I like these spring latches
right here.
[618]
Great idea.
[619]
They fit really well in this
three quarter inch square tube.
[624]
But it was just then when I realized
[629]
that there could be a design flaw here
[632]
after I thought about
[633]
how this is how
well this is going to work,
[636]
I realize that in order to put this in
and to take it out,
[640]
you need to take the spring latches
and you need to bring them in.
[644]
But there's four of them now.
[648]
I don't know about you,
but most of us only have two hands
[651]
I think it's going to take four hands
to do this.
[654]
So one I'm going to have to do because I'm
going to have to come up with something
[657]
that I can maybe slide
over the top of this with a slot in it.
[661]
That one, I can bring this spring back.
[663]
I can just move it over the top and it'll
[666]
retain the spring latches in the open
position.
[669]
Therefore, giving us room to
put it into place and then releasing those
[674]
and they can go back
in it to hold them in place,
[678]
only taking
[678]
two hands that idea
how this is going to happen.
[682]
So let's get started and I'll show you how
I think I'm going to do this
[690]
all right.
[690]
So what I found was some brass tubing.
[693]
Now, I'm not certain
if this is three eighths or quarter inch,
[696]
I'm not I don't know how
they measure this stuff, but all I know
[699]
is the idea
this fits right over top, that quarter
[703]
hex nut and nice snug fit.
[707]
So I've made my dimensions there.
I've measured it.
[709]
I believe it's right. It's about an inch
[711]
and an eighth is the size
I need that's going to work for me.
[713]
And what I've done is I have just
[718]
cut everything off to the right length
and then just run
[720]
a champion tool on the inside
and then a champion tool on the outside.
[724]
Do that on both sides
and that's what it looks like.
[728]
Take it over to the mill,
got an eighth in general
[730]
and woops, forgot to tighten device.
[734]
All right.
[734]
Got in there and nice clean cut
brass is great to work with.
[738]
So smooth and so soft
and it makes for a clean project.
[742]
And this is the way it works
right over the top.
[745]
And that spring latch is retained open
and the opposition and springs close.
[749]
I got eight of them to make.
[751]
So I'm just going to show you
this one more time.
[753]
Basically,
I just started it off to the right length
[756]
and then run a Chamfer tool on the inside,
slight little chamfer on the inside
[761]
and then a small chamfer on the outside
[764]
did the same thing
on the other side as well.
[769]
It doesn't take much as is really soft.
[772]
And then
[773]
over the KBC, eight inches and mil
and just run that right through there.
[777]
And that worked out really good.
[779]
I'm really pleased
with the way that that worked.
[782]
That's a nice, smooth, tight
fit over the top.
[787]
I just gathering up all the pieces
right here, all eight of them,
[791]
and then this is the way they go
right over the top.
[793]
They slide right on a nice tight fit
[798]
and I got to say as a fun little project
[801]
and that turned out really good
[806]
All right, so there you go.
[807]
Those brass tubes were the ticket here
on these spring latches right here.
[812]
Now we're able to keep these things
held open.
[814]
Will be able to put them in and
install them without any problems at all.
[819]
You know, these small little projects,
sometimes with the funnest ones.
[823]
This is a good looking project.
[825]
As small as it is, it turned out
really well, better than expected.
[829]
We're going to get this over the power
cutters and then we'll get it installed
