Did you know that you can get hands-on training in what it's like to be
[9]
an impact investor while you're a GSB student?
[12]
This is not a theoretical exercise.
[14]
The GSB Impact Fund makes real investments that have real social and
[19]
environmental impacts.
[21]
The fund is managed by students, who invest in seed and
[24]
series a stage impact companies around the world.
[28]
Among other investments, our diverse portfolio includes,
[31]
a women-owned company, that makes reusable shipping packaging.
[36]
A tractor sharing venture for farmers in Africa.
[39]
And a new rapid low-cost diagnostic test for hypertension drug therapy.
[45]
The GSB Impact Fund offers students practical experience in sourcing and
[49]
evaluating investment opportunities, pitching and closing a deal, and
[54]
managing a portfolio.
[56]
Plus, you get exposure and build networks with peers and
[60]
practitioners in impact investing and social enterprise.
[64]
Students participate in the impact fund, for a wide range of reasons.
[69]
>> I think a big question for
[71]
a lot of students at Stanford the business school, the GSB.
[75]
Is how do I combine my interests in business with an interest and
[79]
a passion for actually creating real social change?
[83]
And I can't think of a better way to learn that at the GSB than be involved with
[88]
the impact fund.
[89]
Because you're getting to see that straight up in front of you.
[93]
But you're also getting to interact with a ton of entrepreneurs,
[96]
who are thinking on similar lines.
[98]
And you're being supported by all this training, you're being supported
[101]
by all these advisors who are actually practitioners in this space.
[104]
And you're having constant conversations with your classmates and
[108]
your peers on these topics.
[109]
So, if it is something you're interested in social impact and business,
[114]
it's a really fantastic way to get to explore that intersection.
[118]

[119]
>> The impact fund is a great way to meet other students in your class,
[122]
who are also interested in social impact and making a difference in the world.
[126]
So you might meet students in your section very easily.
[129]
The impact fund will give you an opportunity to meet other
[132]
students with the same interests that you might have.
[135]
>> I think you should apply to the impact fund.
[137]
Because it is I think one of the only extracurricular at the GSB,
[141]
where you really get to develop a new skill set.
[144]
And so, it's a valuable experience whether or not you have investment experience.
[149]
I was not invested before getting involved with the impact fund, and
[153]
you do all of the work.
[154]
You're doing the outreach to CEOs.
[156]
You learn what it means to source.
[157]
You learn what it means to do the diligence have those conversations, and
[161]
it is very much a learning by doing.
[164]
>> How can you be involved?
[166]
Through a competitive process.
[168]
You can apply to be on the portfolio team.
[170]
Where you manage the assets of the whole fund and
[173]
provide strategic advice to the companies in the fund portfolio.
[178]
Or on a deal team where you make investments in one of several impact
[183]
sectors, guided by a professional advisor who specializes in that sector.
[188]
You go through the same process you would working in the field.
[191]
To evaluate an investment impact and market potential, business model,
[196]
management team, and key opportunities and risks.
[200]
Then you pitch the deal to an investment committee
[202]
that includes professional impact investors, and GSB professors.
[207]
Participating in the impact fund is great preparation for any impact career.
[213]
You develop deep sector knowledge.
[215]
Learn to evaluate the potential for impact.
[217]
And how investing works.
[219]
And build your professional network.
[222]
While you must be able to commit five hours a week to the impact fund,
[225]
students with any type of experience can apply.
[229]
We build stronger teams by including people with both investing and
[233]
impact backgrounds.
[235]
We learn and grow together.
[237]
You can only apply to participate in the fall.
[240]
But our impact fund program staff is here year round.
[244]
To help you understand the field of impact investing where it might fit in
[248]
your career, and what you can do to pursue your interests.
[252]
We can make connections for all GSB students in the impact investing field.
