How Hard is the CIA Exam compared to Other Accounting Exams?
[6]
Hi everyone, and welcome to another video by

I Pass the CIA Exam!
[11]
The website IPasstheCIAExam.com was created by Stephanie Ng, CPA.

IPasstheCIAExam.com is the #1 community for CIAs and CIA candidates.
[30]
But today, weâre going to talk about how the CIA exam
[33]
compares in difficulty to other accounting certification exams.
[37]
Is the CIA Exam Hard?
[38]
Consulting the Pass Rates
[40]
The CIA pass rate is 43%, on average.
[44]
Compared to the U.S. IMA CMA Exam or the U.S. CPA exam,
[49]
the global CIA pass rate is fairly comparable.
[52]
The CMA exam holds a 45% pass rate,
[54]
and The CPA Examâs pass rate is 50%,
[57]
making the CIA about as challenging
[59]
as other major accounting certification exams you may be considering.
[62]
The CPA Exam has the highest barriers to entry,
[65]
meaning itâs quite challenging to become eligible to take the CPA Exam.
[69]
In fact, the CPA Exam requires candidates to earn 5-years of traditional education from a university or college.
[76]
So, a large number of CPA Exam candidates have earned or are earning a masterâs in accountancy.
[81]
In contrast, the CIA exam barriers to entry are lower,
[85]
meaning many exam candidates may only be required to have an associateâs degree,
[89]
depending on their experience level.
[91]
The amount of education required likely correlates to the pass rates
[94]
-- the more accounting education a candidate has, the higher weâd expect the pass rate to be.
[99]
So, in line with this expectation, we see that the CPA Exam has higher pass rates overall.
[104]
Similar to the CIA exam, the CMA also has lower barriers to entry,
[109]
and pass rates are lower than that of the CPA Exam, as expected.
[113]
How Difficult is the Certified Internal Auditor Exam?
[117]
Figuring Out the Exam Format
[119]
The CIA exam is broken down into three major sections that highlight different areas of accounting knowledge.
[125]
The three portions of the exam do not have to be taken or passed at the same time,
[128]
and youâll actually get 3 years to complete these 3 sections:
[132]
Essentials of Internal Auditing
[134]
Practice of Internal Auditing
[136]
Business Knowledge for Internal Auditing
[139]
For comparison purposes, you may want to know that the CPA and CMA are also both broken down into multiple exam parts.
[146]
However, the CPA has the most exam sections with 4
[150]
and CMA has the least with 2.
[152]
As you can see, CIA fits squarely in the middle with 3 parts
[156]
Whatâs more, CPA candidates have to complete all 4 sections within a rolling 18-month window.
[162]
In contrast, both CMA and CIA candidates are given 3 years to complete both parts.
[168]
What is the CIA Exam Difficulty Level?
[171]
Reviewing the Exam Content
[173]
The CIA exam focuses almost entirely on internal auditing,
[177]
requiring in-depth knowledge of fraud risks,
[180]
information technology, business acumen, and much more.
[183]
Depending on your accounting experience, this can seem challenging
[187]
when compared to the CPA or CMA exams,
[190]
which both ask you to understand higher-level information,
[193]
as opposed to an in-depth knowledge of the nitty-gritty details found in internal auditing.
[197]
Which part of the CIA Exam is the Hardest?
[200]
The more experience you have in internal auditing, the easier the exam should be.
[204]
With that said, the third portion of the exam, which focuses entirely
[208]
on financial management and information technology
[210]
is often considered the most challenging
[212]
because many internal auditors donât often face these topics in their day-to-day positions.
[216]
Additionally, Part 3 may be most difficult for any auditors who donât have an accounting degree.
[222]
Therefore, this part may take some auditors longer to study for than others.
[226]
How Difficult is the CIA Exam?
[228]
Considering the Cognitive Levels
[230]
There are two levels of knowledge for each topic included in the CIA Exam:
[234]
Basic and Proficient.
[236]
For multiple-choice questions tested at the basic level,
[239]
candidates can rely on rote memorization.
[242]
In contrast, the proficient level requires you to apply the concepts to real-world problems and difficult scenarios.
[247]
However, more topics are tested at the proficient level than at the basic level,
[251]
which means youâll be required to apply your understanding to situations,
[254]
make judgments, and synthesize material.
[257]
Because the CIA exam tests more at the proficient level,
[260]
your understanding of the topics must be deep,
[262]
and therefore you cannot rely on rote memorization alone to pass the exam.
[266]
Learning about the CIA Question Types
[269]
The Certified Internal Auditor exam only contains multiple-choice questions,
[273]
which may make it easier than other exams that can require a lengthy essay portion.
[278]
However, do not let the fact that the CIA exam only includes multiple-choice questions
[282]
give you a false sense of security.
[284]
Due to the IIA testing at the proficient level,
[286]
these are some of the toughest multiple-choice questions you may have ever come across.
[290]
On the CIA exam, it will be difficult to make educated guesses on some questions.
[295]
Whatâs more, you may have to select the âbestâ answer choice to get the question correct.
[299]
So, there may be times when all the answer choices look wrong,
[302]
and in these instances, you need to identify the BEST answer choice.
[306]
Discovering the CIA Exam Duration
[309]
Because the CIA exam has so many questions,
[311]
youâll want to be a reasonably fast reader to do well on the exam.
[315]
Part 1 contains 125 challenging multiple-choice questions.
[319]
In contrast, Parts 2 and 3 each contain 100 multiple-choice questions.
[324]
Furthermore, the IIA provides CIA candidates 2.5 hours to complete Part 1
[329]
and 2 hours each for Parts 2 and 3.
[331]
With about one point two minutes dedicated to each question,
[335]
slower readers are more likely to struggle to complete the entire exam in the allotted time.
[340]
The CMA and CPA exams are both fairly lengthy,
[343]
with the CMA allowing three hours to answer 100 questions.
[346]
CPA candidates can use up to 4 hours of time to complete their exams,
[350]
but many CPA candidates still run out of time!
[353]
The number of CPA Exam questions varies by section,
[356]
but the total for any part neither meets nor exceeds 100 questions.
[360]
However, the CMA and CPA both contain complex essay and simulation questions,
[365]
so the CIA is unique in that only multiple-choice questions are included.
[369]
