[10]
- With everything going on in the world right now,
[12]
summer might look a little different this year.
[15]
Canceled trips, not being able to visit friends and family
[18]
we were counting on seeing,
[19]
but it's still so important,
[21]
maybe now more than ever,
[23]
to find some way to disconnect and recharge.
[26]
That brings us to the topic of this video, the staycation.
[29]
When my manager first said
[31]
that I should take some time off,
[33]
my reaction was, "Well,
[34]
"I'd rather wait to see
[35]
"if things somewhat get back to normal so I can travel."
[39]
Took a couple days
[40]
for the constant desire to check Slack to die down,
[43]
but in the end she was right.
[45]
I needed a break,
[45]
and that wasn't a waste of my vacation days.
[48]
With a little planning,
[49]
a staycation can be a budget friendly luxury.
[52]
Slow mornings, delicious food,
[55]
creating new memories with your family.
[57]
So in this video,
[58]
I'm gonna give you a few ideas.
[59]
And then on Friday,
[60]
Hannah will be back to share even more ideas.
[63]
This is our first theme week on the channel
[65]
and we're really excited.
[66]
Okay, before I get into the ideas,
[67]
a quick word about planning.
[69]
I don't mean you have to get out your calendar
[71]
and schedule every hour of your staycation,
[74]
but I know from experience,
[75]
it's easy to fall back into checking work emails
[78]
or get distracted by house chores.
[80]
A little intention will help the days
[82]
from blending into each other,
[84]
and you'll really feel like you made the most
[86]
of your time off.
[87]
Idea number one,
[88]
take a trip without leaving home.
[90]
We might not be able to fly across the world right now,
[92]
but we can bring some of the joys of travel to our home.
[96]
For our wedding anniversary next month,
[98]
we had originally planned
[99]
on visiting Rome for the first time.
[101]
That's no longer happening,
[102]
but that doesn't mean
[103]
I can't bring a little bit of Italy to Virginia.
[105]
For our anniversary dinner,
[106]
my plan is to try my hand at making homemade pasta,
[110]
and Jer is going to attempt tiramisu.
[112]
So if you have any good recipes,
[114]
please let me know.
[115]
And other than going on a culinary adventure,
[117]
here are a few other ways
[119]
you can travel without leaving the house.
[121]
Try a virtual tour.
[122]
I have found so many amazing ones,
[124]
museums, gardens from around the world.
[127]
Dylan at YNAB sent me a virtual walking tour in Japan.
[130]
And I started watching it last night
[132]
and kinda felt like I was there,
[133]
and it really made me want to visit.
[135]
Also, you can choose books and movies
[138]
that will transport you to a new destination.
[140]
And on my walk the other week,
[141]
one of my neighbors back there,
[143]
they were completely turning their living room
[145]
into a beach complete with beach towels,
[147]
netting, beach balls.
[149]
So if your kids are sad because you've had to cancel
[151]
your annual trip to the outer banks,
[154]
you can bring the beach to them.
[155]
Idea number two,
[156]
create your own summer camp.
[158]
If you're looking for something fun to do with kids
[161]
during a staycation,
[162]
build your own summer camp.
[164]
Even me, not the most outdoorsy of people,
[166]
I loved summer camp growing up.
[168]
So think back right now,
[170]
are there any activities you really enjoy
[172]
that would be easy to put together?
[174]
Backyard scavenger hunts,
[175]
DIY bird feeders,
[177]
one woman I follow on Instagram
[179]
has been having water Wednesdays.
[181]
Her kids can wear their swimsuits all day,
[183]
she sets out a sprinkler and has water guns,
[186]
water in general is a lot of fun.
[188]
At our camp,
[189]
we had a very makeshift ratty slip and slide
[191]
on this giant hill,
[192]
and the camp councilors would prime it with dish soap.
[195]
So you would fly.
[196]
And the other day,
[197]
I was randomly targeted in an ad for solar oven s'mores
[201]
that you make the oven out of a pizza box.
[203]
And it looked like a lot of fun,
[205]
so I'll have those instructions in the description box.
[207]
And then for rainy days,
[209]
I mean, friendship bracelets, puzzles.
[212]
You could paint rocks,
[213]
and then when the weather gets nice,
[215]
hide them around the neighborhood.
[217]
Ben B, who you might know from some of our video courses,
[220]
he set up this experiment with his son
[222]
with cups of water and food coloring and paper towels
[225]
so you can watch it go and turn into different colors.
[227]
Idea number three,
[228]
embrace the slower pace of summer.
[231]
With a little intention and some of life's simple pleasures,
[234]
we can get ourselves into a more relaxed summer mindset.
[238]
Last week, I saw my good friend Ashley
[240]
for the first time since all this started.
[242]
We were catching up and she was telling me
[244]
about what she had been up to,
[245]
growing her own herbs and vegetables
[247]
and making homemade popsicles.
[250]
Watermelon, mint, lime,
[251]
if that doesn't sound
[252]
like the most perfect summertime treat,
[254]
I don't know what does.
[255]
She shared the recipe with me,
[256]
so I'll share it with you,
[258]
but think about it.
[258]
What are some other foods of summer you could enjoy?
[261]
For a lot of us,
[262]
maybe iced coffee.
[263]
After my morning walk,
[264]
I grab my journal and a big glass of iced coffee
[267]
to enjoy before the day really gets going.
[269]
And Sarah at YNAB
[271]
recently switched from a French press
[273]
to something called a rumble jar,
[275]
which I've never heard of before.
[276]
Very interested because she said it's really helped
[278]
to up her cold brew game.
[280]
If your town's big summer celebrations got canceled,
[283]
doesn't mean you can't enjoy grilling out on your own.
[286]
That's what we did on Monday earlier this week.
[288]
We had burgers,
[289]
corn on the cob,
[290]
chips and watermelon.
[292]
It made a regular weekday night
[294]
feel a little bit extra special and summery.
[297]
While I am a homebody,
[298]
after all these months I would love a change of scenery.
[301]
Next best thing,
[302]
freshen up your house.
[303]
Throw open windows,
[305]
light a tropical candle.
[306]
If there's room in the budget,
[307]
switch up your decor.
[309]
Put together a playlist of all your favorite summer hits
[312]
from past years and blast it in the kitchen.
[314]
And place some of your favorite vacation photos
[316]
around the house.
[318]
That's something important I wanted to mention,
[320]
document your staycation.
[322]
Cement these new memories with photos and videos.
[324]
A family movie night,
[326]
a candle lit dinner,
[327]
the new garden you've started tending.
[329]
Capture it all.
[330]
So, yes, this summer might not be the one we had planned,
[333]
but with a little creativity,
[334]
we can still make it memorable and enjoyable.
[337]
I hope this video gave you a few ideas
[339]
and don't forget to come back on Friday
[341]
for more staycation inspiration from Hannah.
