Air Force Reserve - Pros and Cons - YouTube

Channel: Jon Cruz - VETS to CEOS

[0]
what if I told you that you can run a
[1]
full-time business you go to school or
[4]
you could work in another full-time
[5]
career all while still serving in the
[7]
United States Air Force and this week
[9]
I'm going to share with you just so you
[10]
can do that in the Air Force Reserves
[11]
I'm also gonna share the pros and cons
[13]
and the different types of programs in
[15]
the Air Force Reserves and what you can
[16]
serve under if you're not familiar with
[18]
the differences between the different
[20]
components such as active-duty Air Force
[21]
Reserves or the Air National Guard be
[23]
sure to watch my previous video that I
[25]
filmed discussing those three different
[27]
types of components the main topic of
[29]
this video will just be primarily on the
[30]
Air Force Reserves and exactly what I'm
[32]
doing when I transition out of active
[34]
duty and for those of you that are
[35]
interested in the space force be sure to
[37]
stick around to the end of this video
[38]
and I'm gonna share with you something
[39]
really cool that we're releasing so now
[41]
that you know what this video is about -
[43]
the intro
[44]
[Music]
[55]
so what is the Air Force Reserves the
[57]
Air Force Reserves is a part time
[60]
component of the United States Air Force
[62]
and it also can turn into a full time if
[65]
you are on active duty orders the best
[67]
thing about the Air Force Reserve
[68]
especially if you're active duty is that
[70]
allows you to continue serving your
[71]
country and then it also gives you the
[73]
opportunity to work in a civilian job or
[76]
if you run your own business or if you
[78]
want to go back to school full-time you
[79]
can do it it's one of the biggest
[80]
difference about being active duty and
[82]
reserves it's gonna be your pay your
[83]
benefits and obviously the amount of
[85]
time you work I now I have discussed all
[87]
of these differences between active duty
[89]
reserves and Guard in the previous video
[90]
and I'll link that against to the right
[92]
side of this video if you're interested
[93]
in watching that first but yeah those
[95]
are the main differences between the
[96]
active duty and the reserves if you're
[98]
in the Air Force Reserves you're
[99]
obviously not going to be working full
[100]
time unless you are on active duty
[102]
orders so of course your pay is gonna be
[104]
a lot less than an active duty member
[106]
but you'll still get to reap majority of
[108]
the benefits to active duty members get
[109]
what are the benefits of being in the
[111]
reserves one of the biggest benefits in
[112]
the Air Force Reserves that you now have
[114]
is time for your family and also time
[116]
for yourself if you want to start your
[118]
own business you want to go to school or
[120]
if you want to work another full time
[121]
career as a civilian another benefit in
[123]
the Air Force Reserves is that you get a
[124]
hundred percent tuition just like an
[126]
active duty member give four thousand
[128]
five hundred dollars per fiscal year for
[130]
your tuition just like active duty and
[132]
you also get all of the on-the-job
[133]
training that active-duty members get
[135]
when you are reporting in for duty Air
[137]
Force Reserve members are also entitled
[138]
their GI bill once you have met the
[140]
qualification period of how long you've
[142]
been in and that's another benefit that
[143]
you have the advantage of or you can
[145]
pass it to your family member weekly as
[146]
you're already getting your full tuition
[147]
through the Air Force Reserve another
[148]
benefit of the Air Force Reserves it is
[150]
a supplemental income to your civilian
[152]
job or business because it is only a
[154]
part-time job and you're only getting
[155]
paid for the days you work it's not
[157]
gonna be a full-time income being in the
[158]
Air Force Reserve so it's more of a
[160]
supplemental income to your civilian
[161]
income you can put that into anything if
[163]
you want to put into stocks or savings
[165]
or whatever whatever you want to do with
[166]
that you also have access to all the
[167]
base installations you have access to
[168]
the BX the commissary you have access to
[172]
low-cost TRICARE as well so you can
[175]
still have medical and dental insurance
[177]
covered for you and your family at
[179]
cause I think something that's also so
[180]
great about the reserves is the ability
[182]
to network even more than what you were
[184]
doing in active duty I say this because
[186]
while you're doing your civilian job
[188]
you're obviously making your connections
[190]
your networks in that position and then
[192]
when you come in for your duty there's
[194]
so many other reservists that have
[195]
civilian jobs that are reservists as
[197]
well that could be in a variety of
[199]
different fields or industries and
[201]
that's a great opportunity to network
[203]
with those individuals and you guys can
[205]
collaborate together and if you need
[206]
something that I think that's one of the
[207]
greatest opportunities of the reserves
[209]
is the networking opportunity if you
[211]
want to be in a different career field
[212]
you can cross train out of your career
[213]
field much easier in the reserves
[215]
compared to active duty what I'm trying
[217]
to cross right into is combat camera
[218]
combat camera essentially trains with
[220]
all the combat oriented career fields
[221]
their primary duty is to document and
[224]
capture the mission that is going on
[226]
with videography and photography what I
[228]
love doing and they're also trained on
[230]
ground combat skills and they're able to
[232]
support the fight if they need to put
[233]
that camera down and pick your weapon up
[235]
a lot of my friends in the reserves has
[236]
told me that it's been so much easier in
[238]
the reserves to cross train to go TTY
[240]
it's volunteer for deployments to go to
[242]
courses that you've I always wanted to
[244]
go to and these are the biggest reasons
[246]
why I want to go into the reserves as
[247]
well because of the opportunities you
[249]
now have in the reserves you also have
[250]
more freedom more flexibility and you're
[253]
able to choose where you want to serve
[254]
so for example right now I'm in the
[257]
process of applying for vacancies
[259]
throughout the world for an ima position
[261]
and I'll discuss what the IMA program is
[264]
later on in this video
[265]
but what essentially does is that allows
[267]
you to apply for any unit with a with a
[269]
vacancy if they approve you you can move
[271]
to that unit whereas active-duty you're
[273]
stuck on a four or six year tour if
[275]
you're overseas or if you're stateside
[276]
you're stuck there for a different
[278]
amount of time and that is why I think
[279]
that's so cool about the reserves you
[281]
you have more control over where you go
[282]
and you just have more control on your
[285]
side of things whereas active-duty it's
[287]
more say okay you can put where you want
[288]
to go but it's more of a like they call
[290]
it a dream sheet because it's not always
[292]
guaranteed
[293]
that's one of the biggest things to as
[294]
well that I like about the reserve and
[296]
the Air Force Reserves you are also
[297]
still entitled to a 20-year retirement
[299]
plan with the DoD rolling out the
[301]
blended retirement system that is
[302]
another video topic I will
[304]
the future I did opt into the blended
[305]
retirement system because I did not
[307]
think I was gonna do a full 20 years on
[308]
active duty or the reserves at that time
[310]
like I said I am in the blended
[311]
Retirement System so when I hit my 20
[313]
year mark I still will be able to retire
[315]
from the Air Force Reserves but I won't
[317]
have access to those funds until a later
[319]
date and I'll discuss that in the next
[320]
topic that's one of the cons of the Air
[322]
Force Reserve another benefit about the
[323]
Air Force Reserves is you have been
[325]
prior active duty and you did leave
[327]
active duty with service related medical
[329]
issues and you were given a VA rating
[331]
you are able to still have a VA
[334]
disability paycheck a lot of people are
[335]
confused with it saying that you can't
[337]
have a VA paycheck and be in the
[339]
reserves I want to dispel that myth
[341]
immediately my in service recruiting
[342]
we've verified this I've looked this up
[344]
on the VA website as well you can still
[346]
hack get a VA disability paycheck as
[349]
long as you are not on active duty
[351]
orders and as long as you are not on
[353]
your regular duty for the reserve so for
[356]
example with the IMA program do one
[357]
month out of the year during the one
[359]
month out of the year i cannot receive
[362]
my VA disability paycheck so 11 out of
[364]
the 12 months I can get my VA disability
[367]
pay check but that month I'm doing my
[369]
ima duty I'm not able to get a VA
[371]
disability paycheck because it's double
[373]
dipping essentially you're getting two
[374]
paychecks from the government so that's
[376]
something I'll post a link as well I'll
[377]
cite my sources there as well for those
[379]
of you that are questioning err don't
[381]
believe me I'll post a link there below
[382]
that you can look it up as well it shows
[384]
the regulations and everything that is
[386]
one of the coolest thing about the
[387]
reserves that you can get your
[389]
disability if you were prior active duty
[391]
to so those are the majority of the pros
[392]
that I have found about the Air Force
[394]
Reserves and you might be wondering okay
[395]
what are some of the cons of the Air
[397]
Force Reserves the only two main cons
[399]
that I've personally found is one is
[401]
your retirement so with active duty like
[403]
I said earlier if you do a full 20 years
[405]
you get access to your pension to your
[406]
retirement the day you retire at your 20
[409]
year mark so say I did 20 years in
[411]
active duty when I retire and get out
[412]
everything's completed I get access to
[414]
my full retirement paycheck every month
[416]
whereas reserves you only get access to
[419]
your retirement once you hit the age of
[421]
60 years old now you can bring that time
[424]
down if you are on active duty orders
[426]
there's a whole different calculation
[428]
how many days and months and years
[430]
they subtract from your your total or if
[433]
you've gone deployments and stuff it
[434]
does bring that number down but you're
[435]
still up in that high 5060 you know age
[439]
limits and you can't access your funds
[441]
itself whereas if you joined the Air
[442]
Force at 18 years old like I did and I
[444]
did a full 20 I'd be out at say 38 39 so
[447]
that's one of the biggest cons I guess
[449]
the grass is always greener on the side
[451]
and isn't a double-edged sword yes I'm
[452]
joining the reserves so that I can have
[454]
more freedom flexibility and be able to
[455]
focus on my business goals and do a new
[457]
career that I'm ambitious about but at
[459]
the same time you're kind of giving up
[461]
that whole retirement at the age of 30
[463]
to 40 years old average with everyone
[465]
else that joined the 18 so that's one of
[467]
the negatives about being in the
[469]
reserves as the retirement age and
[471]
having that access our paychecks second
[473]
thing I guess that is kind of a con of
[475]
the reserves
[475]
I don't really it's not really a con to
[477]
me because I mean you join the military
[478]
to serve and fight for your country but
[480]
I guess it would be titled a con is if
[482]
you're a reservist you're obviously you
[485]
have a full-time civilian career it
[486]
might be running your business you can
[487]
be in voluntarily recalled whether you
[489]
like it or not even if you had your one
[491]
month of tours scheduled for December
[494]
you can still be involuntarily recalled
[496]
if there's a war or if there's any
[497]
conflict that managin chief ends up
[499]
activating the reservists you will be
[501]
brought into active duty and you will be
[503]
serving an x amount of time I honestly
[506]
can't tell you how long you would be on
[507]
active duty orders it really depends on
[509]
the situation but that I guess is one
[511]
negative or con of being in the reserves
[513]
that for me like I said I don't see it
[514]
as a con because they're still are
[516]
serving your country you're chose to
[518]
still serve of course you're expected to
[519]
fight and serve your country if you're
[521]
if you're ever called upon so I don't
[523]
really see that as a combat it's just
[524]
listed on one of the cons but those are
[526]
out that I really want to know what the
[527]
real cons are so yeah those are the pros
[529]
and cons of the Air Force Reserves then
[530]
you might be wondering what are some of
[531]
the programs under the Air Force
[533]
Reserves that you can serve under so the
[534]
first one I want to get into is the
[536]
traditional reservist that is the
[538]
traditional weekend warrior what people
[540]
like to call it as it is kind of a funny
[543]
term but it is kind of true you work one
[546]
week in a month you've reported for duty
[548]
one week in a month whatever you
[549]
normally this would typically be a
[551]
stateside assignment and you would do
[553]
your training or duty everything
[555]
training related or stuff you got to
[557]
catch up on stay qualified on you do
[559]
that during that timeframe and then you
[560]
also have two weeks out of the year that
[562]
you would also have to report in as well
[563]
for an annual tour that is traditional
[565]
service it's one week in a month think
[567]
of it we can warrior and plus the two
[569]
weeks and the next one is that I am a
[570]
reserve program that's what I am doing
[572]
right now great thing about the ima
[574]
reserve program is instead of reporting
[575]
in one weekend per month I'd rather
[578]
serve the entire annual tour in one
[581]
month out of the whole year that's the
[583]
great thing about the IMA reserve
[584]
program is that you're able to serve 39
[586]
days consecutively so it's a little bit
[588]
more than a month but you get to do it
[589]
all in one time crunch instead of
[591]
spreading it out and not everyone's job
[593]
that they're gonna be in or business
[595]
they're running won't give them the time
[596]
flexibility great thing about the IME
[597]
Reserve program it allows you to have
[599]
more flexibility it's choose hey this is
[601]
the month I want to have reporting for
[602]
duty course upon agreement with your
[603]
unit as well and we'll give you more of
[605]
a window that okay I can expect every
[607]
year this is the month that I have my
[609]
tour my duty that I got a I got to
[611]
commit to so makes it easier in my
[612]
opinion if you're running a business or
[614]
if you have another full-time career
[615]
compare it to a traditional reservist
[617]
where you got it going one weekend per
[618]
month plus the two weeks out of the year
[620]
the cool thing about the ima Reserve
[621]
Program is that you can also be assigned
[622]
to units overseas and not just stateside
[624]
with the traditional Reserve Program you
[626]
can only be a scientist a stateside
[627]
assignment to my knowledge and to what
[629]
my interest recruiter told me so that's
[630]
a cool thing but the IMA program as well
[633]
the third program under the Air Force
[634]
Reserve is the Air Reserve technician
[636]
program what this program is is you're
[637]
essentially dual hadded so for example
[639]
picture an IT specialist am an IT
[641]
specialist I'm a GS employee and I'm
[643]
doing IT full-time Monday to Friday I'm
[645]
doing that and I'm also doing it as my
[648]
reserve duty as a reservist during my
[650]
one weekend every month plus my two
[652]
weeks out of the year that's a quick
[654]
breakdown of what the Air Reserve
[655]
technician program is you're doing the
[657]
same job in your full-time role as a GS
[659]
employee but y'all staying as a
[660]
reservist the fourth program is the PIR
[663]
are you know how the military loves our
[665]
acronyms the IRR stands for
[666]
participating individual Ready Reserve
[668]
Program
[669]
this program is appoints only program
[671]
and it's only for a specific career
[672]
fields there are six career fields under
[674]
the PIR our program that you can apply
[676]
for the first one is the Civil Air
[678]
Patrol reserved
[680]
the second is the air force admissions
[682]
liaison officer program the third is a
[684]
chaplain service program the fourth is
[686]
the Jag reinforcements designee program
[688]
fifth is the medical program and the six
[690]
is the ready reinforcements personnel
[692]
sections that is the PIR or personal
[694]
individual Ready Reserve program it's
[696]
only available for six different career
[697]
fields that you can apply under and
[699]
those are all the different programs
[701]
under the Air Force Reserve they can
[702]
serve under so as you can see there's so
[703]
many different programs in the Air Force
[704]
Reserve that you can apply for and the
[706]
sky's the limit on it so you have more
[708]
opportunities in the Air Force Reserve
[710]
and the purpose of this video is not to
[711]
push people away from joining active
[713]
duty or pulling people away that our
[715]
active duty that want to go reserves
[716]
it's more so to educate those that are
[719]
not aware of what the reserves has to
[720]
offer cuz I didn't even know the
[722]
reserves had all this to offer and still
[724]
I started looking into it on my way out
[725]
oh yeah so to recap everything we went
[728]
over the Air Force Reserve is a
[730]
part-time component of the Air Force
[731]
that you can serve under as a part-time
[734]
role or even a full-time role if you are
[735]
activated the Air Force Reserves has
[737]
several benefits being for example 100%
[740]
tuition assistance you still get your
[743]
veterans assistance disability paycheck
[746]
you get your access to the base the BX
[748]
commissary low-cost health insurance
[752]
dental insurance so plenty of benefits
[753]
and then the different programs
[755]
associated with the Air Force Reserve
[756]
such as the traditional reservist
[758]
program
[758]
I am a reserve program error reserve
[760]
technician program and the PIR our
[762]
program so I hope this video is really
[764]
clarified to you what the Air Force
[765]
Reserve is and all of the pros and cons
[768]
within the Air Force Reserve as well as
[769]
the different programs associated with
[771]
the Air Force Reserve so that way you
[772]
have more options who apply for and not
[774]
just be stuck with just the traditional
[776]
reservist visits all that you would
[778]
think that is in the reserves like I had
[779]
originally thought if you found this
