What Is Happening with Britney Spears’ Conservatorship? - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
- Superstar, Britney Spears
has been making headlines
[2]
since 1999.
[4]
But most recently the news
is less about her music
[8]
and more about her legal battles.
[10]
Today I'm gonna get an
update from Thomas Roberts,
[12]
he's the host of DailyMailTV,
[15]
who's bringing us the
DailyMailTV down low.
[18]
Hey Thomas, what's happening
with Britney Spears, please?
[22]
- It all started back in 2007,
[24]
after that notorious
night that she was spotted
[26]
driving her car with her
infant son on her lap,
[29]
then shaving her head and
attacking photographers,
[31]
their vehicle with the umbrella,
[33]
remember that at the car window?
[35]
So her father Jamie petitioned
[36]
for the emergency
temporary conservatorship,
[39]
again, the word being temporary,
[41]
but it turned out to be anything but
[43]
because it just kept
getting kicked down the road
[45]
and extended.
[46]
So in 2019, her father
actually stepped aside,
[49]
so the conservatorship right then
[51]
was handed over to someone else,
[53]
because Jamie had a medical condition
[54]
and couldn't be the steward of it,
[57]
so that care manager role went to a person
[59]
named Jodie Montgomery.
[60]
Now, in August of this year,
[62]
Britney filed to request to
permanently replace her father
[66]
with this Jodie Montgomery person.
[68]
Even more recently Britney
is now fighting with her dad
[72]
and the move to to appoint a
co-conservator of her estate,
[75]
so somebody that would
share that role with Jodie
[77]
and the dad potentially,
she says she would prefer
[80]
a qualified corporate reduce sharing,
[81]
which is more like a bank board.
[83]
But when the judge asked if
she would sign a declaration
[86]
of her feelings her lawyers shockingly,
[89]
you know doc said,
[90]
this is where it really got
a little weird for everybody
[93]
because he said she lacked the capacity
[95]
to sign a declaration and likened
her to a comatose patient.
[99]
- What?
[101]
Wait, wait, hold on,
well first of all Thomas,
[102]
before you get there.
[103]
First of all, for
viewers, who may not know,
[105]
a conservatorship is when
a judge appoints a person
[108]
or an organization to
take care of another adult
[111]
who cannot care for him or herself,
[114]
or manage his or her own finances.
[116]
So Britney has this break, back in 2007,
[119]
I guess it was, we all
remember that very well,
[122]
the dad becomes her conservator,
[125]
dad gets sick in 2019, so he steps down.
[128]
Jodie gets appointed, now
they're back and forth
[131]
and now, when the judge asked
her to sign a declaration,
[134]
the lawyer says that she has the capacity
[137]
of someone who's comatose?
[139]
Doesn't make any sense.
[142]
- And it doesn't because you would think
[144]
that during the time of
when the conservatorship
[146]
was put into place, that there
would be these baby steps
[149]
to get Britney back to a place of running
[152]
and managing her own life,
[153]
but it doesn't look like they've
been doing that much work
[155]
in that direction to get her
fully launched on her own.
[159]
- But Thomas, here's the deal.
[160]
So, it's been, what almost 13 years,
[163]
so the question is, she's not able now?
[167]
She's not of the mental capacity
[170]
to be able to handle her own finances,
[173]
make her own business decisions,
[174]
or even choose who she
wants to lead those efforts.
[180]
- That doc is really kind of
where the big mystery is solved
[184]
with those answers because the
terms of her conservatorship,
[187]
they are private but
again, we're talking about,
[189]
she's worth millions of dollars
[191]
and the records that she's put out,
[193]
the work that she's done, you
know, its a legacy for her
[197]
and her kids.
[198]
And I think that's what her
dad was trying to protect
[200]
but her conservators,
[201]
they've kept track of
the most mundane things
[204]
in terms of her money,
like her Starbucks order.
[207]
- What?
[208]
This is unbelievable, Thomas,
[209]
is she voluntarily under
the conservatorship?
[213]
- It's voluntary, you know,
[215]
it's something that she's agreed to.
[216]
To kind of like have the
ship steered for her.
[219]
So her lawyer can file the
paper to get out of it,
[223]
but it's gonna be a really
long and complicated process,
[225]
like there would be a drawn
out protracted evaluation
[229]
of whether she has she
capacity to make decisions,
[232]
one of which is to
leave a conservatorship.
[235]
Since she's now been brought up in court,
[238]
saying that she shouldn't
leave her conservatorship.
[240]
Her lawyer says she doesn't
really want it all to end.
[243]
Just that she wants her dad to
not be a part of that control
[247]
and I think that's the sticky wicket here
[249]
because family being involved, you know,
[251]
there are emotions
[252]
and deep roles that we all
play with our families.
[256]
And it's hard I think,
probably or something,
[260]
in her adult life, to deal with her dad
[263]
dealing with all of her money
[264]
and over her Starbucks order,
I mean, it's a little much.
[267]
- Yeah, it's so convoluted,
[268]
I don't know how you see a way out of this
[270]
but thank you for joining us today.
[273]
- Hey, I'm here for you,
[274]
anytime you need a convoluted
story untold, you know,
[277]
and revealed for you.
[278]
- That's right, well of course,
[279]
we wish Britney the
absolute best and her kids
[283]
and hopefully they will
come to a good resolution.
