First witness testifies in R. Kelly's racketeering trial in New York - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
federal prosecutors say r kelly is a
[3]
predator who dominated and controlled
[5]
underage girls the 54-year-old r b
[8]
singer's racketeering trial got underway
[10]
in new york yesterday it's just one of
[13]
the criminal cases he's facing joining
[15]
us now for more on this is jerica duncan
[17]
dreka good morning one of our kelly's
[20]
accusers testified yesterday
[22]
can you tell us who she is and what the
[25]
prosecution is trying to prove by having
[27]
her speak
[30]
well you know this case is really all
[32]
about sex crimes it's about uh
[34]
conducting an enterprise as prosecutors
[36]
saying they're hoping to show a pattern
[39]
they're showing witnesses they want to
[41]
bring forth witnesses that will talk uh
[43]
to them like jaronda pace about their
[46]
experiences with r kelly the defense on
[48]
the other hand is trying to poke holes
[50]
in the testimony early on uh even in
[53]
their opening arguments saying show me
[55]
the proof where is the proof but going
[58]
back to jaronda pace she was someone
[60]
that was also
[62]
interviewed for that documentary that
[64]
appeared on lifetime surviving r kelly
[66]
the same story that she told in that
[68]
documentary is the same one that she
[70]
told jurors yesterday that she was 14
[73]
when she was outside
[75]
during r kelly's first trial that you
[77]
might recall when he was indicted on
[79]
child pornography and later acquitted in
[81]
2008 she talked about going to that
[84]
trial attending it as a supporter as a
[87]
fan and then later meeting him and
[90]
actually having interaction with him
[91]
when she was 16 years old she said that
[94]
our kelly took her virginity
[96]
that she did tell the singer that she
[98]
was older than 16 at the time that she
[101]
was
[101]
19 years old but then later told him
[104]
after they had sex she said that she was
[106]
only 16 and that his response according
[109]
to her was continue to say that you're
[111]
19 and act like you're 21.
[114]
so right there you're setting up the
[116]
case for someone who knew that a person
[118]
was underaged and continued to have sex
[120]
with them but again the bigger picture
[123]
in this case is that they're saying our
[126]
kelly led an enterprise they're using
[128]
rico statute the similar things that
[129]
they would use for mob or gang but
[131]
they're saying that he led people his
[133]
associates managers to direct them to do
[137]
different things and
[138]
transport women over state lines for the
[140]
purpose of having sex with them
[142]
yeah that racketeering charge and that
[145]
uh alleged
[148]
the way that they want they they say
[150]
that he created this criminal enterprise
[154]
definitely something that we've been
[155]
hearing about uh from the prosecution
[158]
but regarding the defense opening
[160]
and their opening argument yesterday
[162]
what case did they make to jurors you
[165]
mentioned that they're trying to poke
[166]
holes what kind of holes did they do
[169]
they try and create
[171]
you know the defense um interestingly
[174]
enough went for about two hours and
[176]
there were a number of times where the
[178]
judge had to stop
[180]
in the middle of her argument nicole
[182]
blank becker who's arguing on defense of
[185]
r kelly and basically reminded her that
[188]
she is to present the jurors with what
[190]
evidence she can expect
[192]
or what evidence they can expect to hear
[195]
and and pretty much
[196]
give her argument as to why she does not
[199]
believe that this evidence will hold
[201]
instead there were times where she said
[203]
to the jurors you know how can you lead
[205]
the enterprise and be the enterprise and
[208]
the judge stopped her and said wait i
[210]
will tell the jurors and instruct them
[211]
on the law you talk about what the
[213]
evidence is that they will expect to
[215]
hear from during this trial or some of
[218]
the evidence that they will expect to
[219]
hear during this trial so
[222]
that i'm certain had some sort of effect
[224]
on jurors because that happened a number
[226]
of times
[227]
there were times where you weren't
[229]
really sure where she was going with her
[232]
defense but really going back to the
[234]
fact that you know r kelly had fans and
[237]
it was known that he had girlfriends she
[240]
said and that these women who were with
[241]
him knew that he had girlfriends she
[244]
didn't really say much though about this
[246]
idea that he was having sex allegedly
[249]
with underage girls
[251]
she focused on the fact that these women
[254]
knew what they were getting into she
[255]
said that a lot of them were super fans
[258]
and they wanted fame and that's what
[260]
they're motivated by even today
[263]
interestingly enough another person that
[265]
was brought up at the very beginning for
[267]
prosecutors was the late singer aaliyah
[269]
it will be 20 years that she died this
[272]
month and
[274]
in that specific instance what the
[276]
prosecutors were saying is bribery took
[278]
place because aaliyah was 15 years old
[282]
our kelly was 27 and someone within his
[285]
camp was able to get a fake marriage
[287]
license our fake id excuse me to say
[290]
that aaliyah was actually 18 at the time
[292]
that she was 15 and for the first time
[295]
we also learned that i hadn't heard that
[297]
the reason behind getting married was uh
[300]
the prosecutors say
[302]
that our kelly believed that aaliyah may
[305]
have been pregnant and basically stopped
[307]
in the middle of a tour to come to be
[309]
with her and
[311]
get this marriage license hoping that
[313]
that would sort of quell any rumors or
[315]
or wouldn't look as bad if she was uh in
[318]
fact pregnant but there are a number of
[320]
jane does that are listed
[322]
someone who said that she was a former
[324]
intern at a radio station and then ended
[327]
up
[328]
locked in a hotel room that she had you
[331]
know some chinese food and some coke and
[334]
somehow passed out and then woke up to
[336]
seeing r kelly in the room and believing
[339]
that he had had sex with her and she was
[342]
passed out again you're hearing from
[343]
jaronda pace who's still going to
[345]
testify later today there are a number
[347]
of people that we expect to hear from at
[349]
least six
[351]
possibly more than that that are part of
[353]
this uh federal indictment well eureka
[356]
these stories are shocking uh we look
[358]
forward to your reporting on the
[360]
testimony later today uh hopefully on
[362]
cbsn and even evening news
[365]
thank you
