Channel: unknown
[1]
we're designing spaces the show that's
[4]
all about you and your space your home
[6]
and surroundings I'm Debi Marie and I'm
[9]
David Jones today it's all about your
[11]
home and what we can do to make our
[13]
homes secure and functioning smoothly
[15]
we're thinking ahead taking those
[17]
precautions that pay off in the long run
[19]
that's right and that includes wireless
[20]
security systems maintenance of your
[22]
wireless devices and home warranties now
[25]
if you don't know what any of that stuff
[26]
is you'll definitely want to stick
[27]
around and see today's show and it's
[29]
coming up right now on designing spaces
[59]
we've heard of homeowners insurance but
[62]
what about a home warranty
[63]
that's a good question cuz I'm not
[64]
really sure what a warranty is all about
[66]
oh I know what it is oh you do yeah show
[68]
me tell you yeah okay once you
[70]
understand what it is you're gonna think
[71]
it's very convenient and a great peace
[73]
of mind
[74]
watch this owning a home is a huge
[79]
investment and that investment requires
[81]
maintenance and repairs
[83]
unfortunately maintenance has a cost and
[86]
many times homeowners do not set money
[88]
aside for appliance and systems repairs
[91]
designing spaces got together with
[93]
Michael Herman from HSA home warranty
[97]
I'm not sure many homeowners know what
[100]
home warranties are so can you explain
[101]
what they are
[102]
sure Debi a home warranty is a service
[105]
contract that provides valuable
[107]
protection for the most important
[109]
investment that most families make their
[111]
home the warranty covers the major
[114]
mechanical systems in the home such as
[116]
the heating and air conditioning major
[117]
appliances plumbing electrical and the
[120]
water heater in addition you can even
[122]
purchase coverage for your swimming pool
[124]
hot tub or many other items as well so
[127]
today everyone's schedules are so ki and
[130]
if something comes up that you don't
[132]
have planned in your schedule it can
[134]
really throw your your week off yeah and
[137]
you know what it always seems to break
[138]
when we're at our busiest okay so what
[141]
we like to do is when you have that
[143]
problem we take care of it for you you
[146]
call us and we've got qualified
[148]
pre-screened contractors that we can
[150]
send to your home you don't have to
[151]
worry about finding someone who is
[153]
reputable raining or doesn't want to
[154]
call you back when you call absolutely
[157]
absolutely
[157]
so that convenience is a big part of the
[159]
value that we bring to our customers as
[161]
well okay so how does it work if we have
[163]
home owners insurance do we need both or
[166]
do they work together great question
[168]
Debbie this comes up a lot when we talk
[169]
about home warranties so what homeowners
[172]
insurance does is it covers for
[174]
catastrophic loss in your home things
[176]
like fire damage theft storm damage we
[180]
cover the mechanical failures that
[182]
happen just due to normal use and age
[184]
the mechanical systems in your home okay
[186]
truthfully the two work together hand in
[189]
hand quite well the national average
[191]
cost of repair and replacement without a
[193]
home warranty on covered items can run a
[196]
homeowner from about $100 for some items
[199]
to thousands of dollars for some of the
[201]
more expensive and most important
[203]
appliances and mechanical items in your
[206]
house okay Debbie we've talked about all
[210]
the different systems in the home this
[212]
is the air conditioning system it's the
[215]
big one okay so this is the outside
[217]
portion of the air conditioning system
[219]
it's called the condensing unit we were
[221]
inside in the garage we looked at the
[223]
inside portion the air handler that has
[225]
the evaporative coil in it so the middle
[228]
of the summer and a major heat wave hits
[230]
all right you do not want this to break
[233]
down yeah right but if it does
[235]
unfortunately if you do not have a home
[237]
warranty there's some real challenges to
[239]
getting service on it right and it could
[240]
be a few days it could be a few days it
[242]
could be even longer if you have a home
[244]
warranty
[244]
we've got proprietary relationships with
[247]
service contractors in addition to that
[249]
we also have relationships with
[251]
suppliers for the actual replacement
[253]
equipment if it needs to be replaced
[255]
it's an ALICE you're good to go right so
[258]
we can avoid some of those unnecessary
[260]
delays right back inside the house
[262]
Michael points out many items that you
[264]
would expect to be covered and some
[266]
others that you may not have even
[268]
thought of Debbie we have coverage
[270]
available for all the major appliances
[272]
in the kitchen including the
[273]
refrigerator the dishwasher built-in
[275]
microwave oven and the oven range
[277]
appliance claims are some of our most
[279]
common claims what happens if an
[281]
appliance is too old to find parts to
[283]
repair it no problem Debbie the warranty
[285]
provides repair or replacement coverage
[287]
so in a situation such as that if the
[290]
parts no longer available we would
[292]
provide a like-kind system replacement
[294]
we look at every single claim as an
[296]
opportunity to prove our value to our
[298]
customers the hot water heater is one of
[300]
the most important things we cover in
[302]
the home the life expectancy of a water
[304]
heater is around 10 years and when they
[306]
fail they can cause a real mess what
[308]
about the plumbing system Debbie we have
[311]
coverage available for all sorts of
[313]
items in the home
[314]
that's fall in the plumbing category
[315]
this includes faucets drain lines water
[319]
lines fixtures in the bathtub or shower
[321]
we even provide coverage to unclog
[324]
drains stoppages debbie the warranty
[326]
provides coverage for the doorbell
[327]
system lighting fixtures attic and
[330]
exhaust fans ceiling fans the list goes
[333]
on and on so let's talk about pricing
[335]
Debbie pricing varies some region to
[337]
region throughout the country but
[339]
typically a homeowner can expect to pay
[340]
forty to fifty dollars a month for a
[342]
pretty comprehensive warranty plan it's
[344]
a matter of fact on average every one of
[345]
our customers has a paid claim are there
[347]
any other charges that we would have to
[349]
pay maybe like a deductible every time
[351]
you initiate service there is a trade
[353]
call fee that you have to pay typically
[356]
that's the only cost that you're going
[357]
to incur however there are some
[360]
instances where there may be an
[361]
additional charge for something like a
[363]
permit okay that the warranty does not
[365]
provide coverage on and where can our
[367]
viewers learn more
[368]
