Building Gunwerks | Vertical Integration - YouTube
Channel: Gunwerks
[12]
Gunwerks is on a mission to vertically聽
integrate its manufacturing so that we聽聽
[16]
can control quality lead times and cost聽
and provide a better value to our customer聽聽
[21]
so the three main things that make up a rifle聽
system are the stock the receiver and the barrel聽聽
[26]
so our big focus on vertical integration is聽
bringing the machines in the process in-house聽聽
[32]
that will allow us to make those parts from raw聽
material so the first product here I want to聽聽
[37]
show you is receivers so we've got a couple聽
machines here that are making the different聽聽
[41]
parts the receivers the bolts the bolt heads etc聽
and what we do is we we feed a bar of material聽聽
[47]
in this case aluminum into this machine and聽
then it spits out a finished product at the end聽聽
[52]
so to us that that gives us the control over you聽
know what configuration we want how many we want聽聽
[59]
to put on the shelf um what what the lead time is聽
for the manufacturing process and we can also work聽聽
[65]
on our system and until we're sick of working聽
on our system but we can make it so the quality聽聽
[71]
is exceptional and that's really what our big goal聽
here is with Gunwerks vertical integration efforts聽聽
[76]
is to get control of quality and then lead time聽
a second so let's go check out the next process聽聽
[82]
hey the next process i want to show you is really聽
really cool we've been working on this for a lot聽聽
[86]
of years to get the intellectual property the聽
tools machines the process everything dialed聽聽
[93]
in that's barrel manufacturing the barrel is聽
absolutely the most important part of a rifle聽聽
[99]
system when it comes to precision and accuracy聽
so we're looking to control dimensions that are聽聽
[106]
tens of thousands or less of an inch in the聽
manufacturing of a barrel system and leaving聽聽
[112]
that outside leaving it to somebody else is聽
a big hope that sometimes doesn't always pay聽聽
[118]
off so what we've done here is we've landed the聽
machines and we've built the processes to take a聽聽
[125]
kind of a solid chunk of steel here we always聽
do stainless steel but you take this piece of聽聽
[129]
stainless steel we'll chop it off we'll put our聽
chamfers on it and then the next step that we do聽聽
[135]
over here in this machine is we'll drill and ream聽
the holes so this machine is called a gun drill聽聽
[142]
and it will it will drill a hole that will be sub聽
thousandths of an inch of run out per inch and so聽聽
[149]
you get a 24 inch piece it will be very straight聽
so you drill it you ream it and then we have a聽聽
[155]
home machine over here that lets us control that聽
final bore dimension to a tenth of a thousandth of聽聽
[161]
an inch it's amazing how awesome these machines聽
work at the processes we've developed to get聽聽
[166]
the most out of these machines and then from聽
there the barrel goes onto the rifling station聽聽
[170]
and we'll cut the rifling and then we lap and聽
then we have a turning station there and then聽聽
[175]
we always do our carbon fiber in the composite聽
room but the total vertical integration of a聽聽
[179]
barrel gives us the absolute control over quality聽
which yields a rifle system that works every time聽聽
[186]
and really importantly it gives us the barrel that聽
we want when we need it we have so many iterations聽聽
[192]
and SKU's and configurations of rifle system to聽
stock all of those parts would be a monster so聽聽
[197]
that's one of the unique things about Gunwerks is聽
you can get whatever you want how you want it and聽聽
[202]
our lead times are short enough you can almost get聽
it when you want let's go check out rifle stocks
[212]
So this is our clean room this聽
is the nicest room in the whole聽聽
[214]
shop these guys keep it about 65聽
degrees in here it's kind of chilly聽聽
[218]
um so what we're doing here is we're doing聽
stock layup this has been something we've聽聽
[222]
been doing for about six years the reason why we聽
vertically integrated on stocks was we would put聽聽
[227]
an order in for a rifle stock and it would take聽
12 months sometimes to get that rifle stock back聽聽
[233]
and so we would have to forecast 12 months in聽
advance what we were going to sell for rifle聽聽
[237]
systems it was impossible it was not a good聽
system we would we would just have racks and聽聽
[242]
racks and racks of inventory that we we would try聽
to keep on the shelf so the main goal that we had聽聽
[248]
in integrating rifle stocks into the manufacturing聽
was to get control of the the lead times and so聽聽
[256]
now instead of 12 months it takes us about 12聽
days from start to finish to have a stock ready聽聽
[262]
to go into arrival it's a lot faster delivery time聽
and the raw materials are easy to get a hold of聽聽
[267]
that was number one the second thing that we聽
found was when we in we designed the new clymr聽聽
[272]
and magnus systems uh we have some shapes in those聽
stocks that are that are very sharp sharp edges聽聽
[278]
going to curving flowing lines and we weren't聽
able to get the type of quality that we wanted聽聽
[284]
from other supply and so a secondary thing for聽
us was to develop a process that allowed us to do聽聽
[290]
those type of transitions and shapes and features聽
on a rifle stocks not only so it was functional聽聽
[295]
but also very elegant as well so that that drove聽
us to do this vertical integration as well so聽聽
[302]
these guys do an awesome job of laying up a rifle聽
stock we'll lay them up we'll cook them and then聽聽
[307]
we'll push them all on through and machine then聽
specifically to the gun build that you want聽聽
[312]
and the the process is really cool but again the聽
cost for us here in this situation wasn't a factor聽聽
[320]
it was more the quality and the throughput in fact聽
it's kind of a funny story a lot of manufacturing聽聽
[325]
shops don't know how to fully burden the cost聽
of their products and we spent a lot of time聽聽
[329]
in the accounting to understand what our product聽
costs are it costs us more money to make a stock聽聽
[334]
in-house than what it cost us to buy one in the聽
old days so sometimes the cost factor doesn't聽聽
[340]
really pan out but in general you know we're聽
looking at a three to five year payoff on the聽聽
[345]
investment of the machines and the process so we聽
do have to have cost savings but that cost savings聽聽
[350]
allows us to to make the capital investments and聽
the capital purchases to expand and to grow and聽聽
[357]
really where we're trying to provide the benefit聽
to our customer is in quality and lead time
[369]
okay so what does vertical聽
integration mean for you the customer聽聽
[372]
essentially you're going to get a聽
really great product from Gunwerks聽聽
[376]
we're going to be able to build products聽
in stock ready to ship or custom make to聽聽
[381]
order products and deliver in just a couple聽
months that's kind of a big deal in this space聽聽
[387]
and we're going to do it with the traditional聽
quality that you've come to expect from Gunwerks
