Im a huge cinema buff - I was so disappointed聽 when the latest James Bond release was postponed聽聽
[4]
because of covid. This week saw cinemas reopen聽 after a battering year so in this video I want to聽聽
[10]
see if the UK cinema will recover and if so,聽 how as investors we can cash in on that rise?聽
[18]
So movie theaters were dying but now as they聽 re-open, the sector seems quite uncertain. The聽聽
[25]
Covid 19 pandemic and lockdowns have left聽 the biggest chains in cinema at the edge聽聽
[29]
of becoming bankrupt with owner of Cineworld聽 and Odeon which is AMC Entertainment Holdings聽聽
[35]
having to raise additional capital and聽 renegotiate debts to save itself from going bust.聽
[40]
So I started looking at the AMC stock and was聽 surprised to see it has been quite resilient...The聽聽
[46]
stock has been trending upward and that聽 rather large spike was caused by the short聽聽
[51]
squeeze as AMC was a target for vloggers聽 and reditt forums... you can see my video聽聽
[63]
here (Point up) which talks about AMC back then... What I really wanted to understand that if the聽聽
[67]
stock which is showing positive conviction is聽 right, and if there is more upside which is聽聽
[72]
still to be priced in... and I start to look聽 at myself and how we are behaving. Albeit, I聽聽
[74]
am in a very different situation with two聽 toddlers and being able to escape to the聽聽
[77]
cinema to watch a movie is well just impossible! So there are two main things to consider when聽聽
[82]
thinking about cinemas and that relates to how聽 the market for consuming film has changed over聽聽
[87]
the last year and before that too. The way I聽 think of the lockdown is that is has acted as聽聽
[91]
an accelerant for certain industries that were聽 already in demise prior to the lock down and聽聽
[94]
cinema I think is one of them. 1. Audiences have been shifting聽聽
[99]
to streaming services for some time now and聽 Netflix, Amazon and the awesome Disney+ have聽聽
[104]
been collecting audiences in bigger numbers and聽 can dictate production to suit their audiences.聽聽
[113]
home streaming has been pulling audiences聽 from cinemas prior to the lock down and the聽聽
[117]
lock down has just massively accelerated it. 2. Studios have what they call a window - this聽聽
[122]
is the period of time a release is allowed聽 to run exclusive on cinema screens... this聽聽
[126]
is before they are released for home video. The聽 majority of Hollywood studios have been cutting聽聽
[133]
that 90 day period to shorter and shorter聽 periods before transitioning to home video.聽聽
[137]
Some films - big budget - are just聽 going straight to home video too.聽
[144]
The second one on the face of it might seem聽 something studios have always done - have聽聽
[149]
lower quality or budget films or independent聽 films go straight to video... but no - this is聽聽
[154]
different. With a lot of the major studios now聽 having their own streaming services - Paramount,聽聽
[158]
Disney+ or Warner Bros and HBO Max there is聽 a rush to build an audience that creates the聽聽
[164]
annuity revenues that subscribers pay. In order to聽 build those audiences, the streaming services need聽聽
[170]
the best content available for subscribers...聽 taking Warner Bros as an example - there are聽聽
[174]
plans to reduce the 90 day window from cinema聽 to home video by half to only 45 days...聽
[182]
Now with that being said, there is generally聽 optimism in the market although it will take聽聽
[187]
longer to get back into the steady state. I聽 was reading an article where the Phil Clapp聽聽
[191]
who is the CEO for the UK Cinema Association聽 mentioned that he expects the industry to recover聽聽
[199]
but for the rest of this year challenging Covid 19聽 protocols will dent box office takings - even with聽聽
[206]
the success of the vaccine programs, consumers are聽 still nervous of returning... this was a similar聽聽
[212]
sentiment with UK pubs opening this week. However, recent research has shown that聽聽
[216]
audiences are missing the cinema.. there聽 was a research article posted by the Film聽聽
[223]
Distributor's Association that cited ~60% of聽 people said they missed going to the cinema聽聽
[229]
the most as an activity- it also showed聽 that the most avid streamers were big fans聽聽
[238]
of the cinema and keen to return. Hmmmm. Thats all well and good but how do we back聽聽
[243]
them up when thinking of whether to invest in聽 the cinema industry - well there are some nice聽聽
[247]
case studies that we can refer to where lock downs聽 have eased and cinemas have re-opened in countries聽聽
[251]
like Russia, China and Japan. Taking China as聽 an example, audiences have now grown beyond聽聽
[258]
pre-pandemic levels showing that actually people聽 are going to the cinema more often than before聽
[264]
Now my husband is a bit more on the streaming聽 band wagon - he is a bit of a homebody and so聽聽
[272]
he was saying look Fifi, all these films are聽 coming straight to streaming... and look how聽聽
[276]
bad Tenet did from Christopher Nolan when it聽 did go to Cinema. Yes, its true - there have聽聽
[280]
been a few films which I have seen go straight to聽 netflix or prime - these being: Coming 2 America聽聽
[285]
with Eddie Murphy - I loved the first one, child聽 of the 80s here... Mulan and the Trials of the聽聽
[293]
Chicago 7. However, thats not true and the聽 VAST majority of films with blockbuster tags聽聽
[298]
have been held back or pushed back by the studios聽 to take advantage and maximise revenues... this聽聽
[303]
includes films like James Bond No Time to聽 Die, Top Gun Maverick, Avatar 2 and Mission聽聽
[307]
Impossible 7. Similarly with Marvel having the聽 outlet of Disney+ which has been a roar in our聽聽
[313]
house - there are four box office potential films聽 that seemingly will also be held back and this聽聽
[318]
includes Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend聽 of the Ten Rings, Eternals and Spider Man- No聽聽
[320]
Way Home... at least for the next year and a half,聽 the cinema will be a super vibe fun place to be!聽
[324]
Even with the shortened cinema exclusive聽 window - cinemas should have a lucrative聽聽
[328]
run. The stats show that 90% of box office聽 take for a new release is made in the first聽聽
[333]
four to five weeks which is great! Also, in聽 my dating years, cinemas were moving away聽聽
[339]
from dingy sticky seats and carpets to much more聽 fun experiences with food, drink, better seats,聽聽
[345]
sofas and so on... focusing on the experience is聽 where the edge in cinemas is... so we will always聽聽
[352]
want to see the big blockbusters like James Bond聽 in the cinema... its what cinema is made for...聽聽
[358]
and the cinema chains get it. Vue is spending聽 拢60mn to improve sites with these facilities! Yay!聽
[365]
So where is the opportunity for investors -聽 so from a UK perspective, the obvious stock聽聽
[370]
is CINEWORLD which is still trading below its聽 long term average and March 2020 still had the聽聽
[376]
majority of cinemas closed.. its maybe a good聽 time to now consider looking at this stock. My聽聽
[381]
favourite chain is Everyman and I took at the聽 stock price and it has been trending up - 41.5%聽聽
[387]
in the last six months but again below its long聽 term average - I talked about plush lush cinema聽聽
[393]
experiences and Everyman is all about that so聽 it would be a good pick if we believe in cinemas聽聽
[398]
moving in that direction which they obviously聽 are. The elephant in the room is of course AMC聽聽
[404]
Entertainment - which is up 300% YTD - what聽 a ride... and probably some way to go but聽聽
[410]
will be volatile given the interest from short聽 sellers and reditt forums so Im staying away.聽
[414]
Now with lockdown easing, and people spending聽 money - us personal finance folk will聽聽
[418]
notice inflation rearing its ugly head and so as聽 we move pass the one year anniversary of lockdown,聽聽
[425]
and we start to see things generally聽 looking up, I really wanted to cover the聽聽
[428]
three scenarios that are getting discussed聽 so much in our house which are linked to聽聽
[432]
beating inflation in 2021... and you can click聽 here so I can take you through them. Ciao x
