Amex Platinum vs Chase Sapphire Reserve (Epic Duel) *Updated Late 2020* - YouTube
Channel: Joey Kim
[0]
american express platinum versus the
[2]
chase sapphire reserve both premium
[4]
travel cards
[5]
both have 550 annual fees but which one
[8]
is more valuable for you in today's
[10]
video we're going to be breaking down
[11]
the benefits
[12]
and talking about how you can earn more
[14]
value than the annual fee on these cards
[16]
welcome or welcome back i'm joey and
[18]
this channel is all about maximizing
[20]
your money
[21]
whether that's through credit cards
[22]
money management skills or investing to
[25]
ultimately help you reach your financial
[27]
goals
[27]
i am a heavy user of both chase and amex
[30]
so
[30]
today in this review i'm definitely
[32]
going to be including my personal
[34]
experiences
[34]
with both sides first we're going to
[36]
compare the credits that come with both
[39]
cards secondly
[40]
we're going to talk about the point
[41]
value comparing the amex point system
[43]
with the chase ultimate rewards and then
[45]
we'll talk about
[46]
how the amx plat is a charge card and
[48]
the chase sapphire reserve is actually a
[50]
credit card
[51]
meaning the billing cycles will be
[53]
slightly different and then we'll wrap
[54]
up this video talking about my personal
[56]
experiences with the protection and
[58]
customer service
[59]
these cards have to offer starting off
[61]
they say cash is king right
[62]
shout out to uncle dave but for real if
[64]
i'm paying 550
[66]
in annual fees i instantly feel better
[68]
when i know a portion of my money will
[70]
be given back
[70]
through credits for cash and this is
[72]
where the chase sapphire really shines
[74]
to take
[75]
first place the chase sapphire reserve
[78]
is going to come with a 300
[80]
annual credit automatically applied to
[82]
travel spending to name a few
[84]
chase defines traveling as flights taxis
[87]
tolls
[88]
parking or even discount travel sites so
[90]
pretty flexible and for an
[92]
average spender i don't see any problem
[94]
in redeeming the 300
[95]
annual credit you'll also earn 120 in
[98]
statement credits on doordash
[100]
purchases through 2021 so that's gonna
[102]
be 60
[103]
for the year of 2020 and 60 in the year
[105]
of 2021. keep in mind with these cash
[108]
credits
[108]
flexibility is going to be where 99 of
[111]
your value comes from
[112]
easily chase could have given a 500
[114]
travel credit but if they limited that
[116]
benefit to airfare through a specific
[118]
airline
[118]
it wouldn't be as valuable amex
[122]
which reminds me of the reason why the
[124]
amx plot comes in second or last place
[127]
even with five hundred dollars total
[128]
cash credits that's going to be 200
[131]
through airline incidentals 200 for uber
[133]
and 100 for saks fifth avenue amex just
[136]
gets crushed in terms of flexibility
[138]
because with the 200
[140]
airline incidental credit you're only
[142]
going to be able to redeem these credits
[143]
through the same airline in a given year
[145]
and also you can't even use it on
[147]
airfare it only covers
[148]
charges like seat change fees baggage
[151]
fees and onboard food and beverages
[153]
next with the 200 uber credit you're
[155]
going to be getting 15 a month
[157]
and 20 in the month of december you can
[159]
also use this with ubereats which is
[161]
just like seamless for grubhub and
[162]
personally
[163]
i have never found this too difficult to
[165]
redeem the 200
[166]
uber credit on an annual basis and the
[169]
last cash credit we're gonna be talking
[170]
about is a hundred dollar saks fifth
[172]
avenue credit which to make matters
[173]
worse
[174]
the hundred dollar credit is broken down
[176]
into fifty dollar credits every six
[178]
months and for those who don't know what
[179]
saks fifth avenue
[181]
is it's basically just a more expensive
[183]
nordstrom that nobody knows about but
[185]
usually i just try to buy socks for
[187]
cologne so i'm not over that 50
[188]
limit or if i am i'm just barely over it
[191]
those are all the cash credit benefits
[193]
from amex
[194]
again terrible execution let's talk
[196]
about the point values now
[197]
starting off with the amex you're going
[199]
to be earning 60 000 points after you
[201]
spend 5 000 in the first three months
[203]
you're also going to be earning five
[205]
points for flights where hotels purchase
[207]
on the amx travel site
[209]
and two points for any other travel
[211]
purchased through the amx travel site
[213]
which is basically just like a
[214]
hotels.com and the prices are actually
[216]
pretty good
[217]
and competitive with other travel sites
[219]
and now moving on to the chase sapphire
[221]
reserve you're going to earn 50
[223]
000 points after you spend 4 000 in the
[225]
first three months
[226]
earning 10 points per dollar spent on
[228]
lyft through march 2022. three points
[230]
per dollar spent on travel and dining
[233]
so clearly amex wins this category right
[235]
because chase didn't have a 5x category
[238]
to really answer this we're gonna have
[240]
to look at how the points
[242]
are redeemed with amex you can redeem it
[244]
through gift cards
[245]
amazon charges account credits amex
[248]
travel sites or transfer
[250]
partners the best way to maximize points
[253]
is through transfer partners and the
[254]
worst way to redeem
[255]
is through amazon charges or account
[258]
credits
[259]
so let's cover the value of amx points
[261]
when redeeming it through
[262]
transfer partners if you look at the
[264]
picture you can see we have 17 airlines
[266]
and three hotels we can transfer the
[268]
points to
[268]
and when transferred to airline partners
[270]
you're going to be able to average
[272]
around 1.5 cents if you strategize
[274]
correctly
[275]
so what does 1.5 cents per point even
[278]
mean i mean 60 000 amx points will be
[280]
worth around 900
[282]
which is really really good taking a
[284]
look at chase now
[285]
similar to amex you can redeem the
[287]
points the same way and again
[289]
the worst way is going to be using your
[291]
points on gift cards or account credits
[293]
but what makes a chase different is with
[295]
the chase sapphire reserve
[296]
and just the reserve when redeeming
[298]
points to the chase travel site you're
[300]
going to get a 50
[302]
boost on your points making your 50 000
[305]
points worth 75
[306]
000 or 750 dollars and just like amex
[310]
chase has travel partners as well but
[311]
instead of 17 airlines you're going to
[313]
be looking at 13 airlines
[315]
and you can expect to earn around 1.5 to
[318]
2.0 cents per
[319]
point so similar value as amex and i
[321]
hate to say this but the reserve and the
[323]
platinum seem to be tied in this
[325]
category
[326]
however i will say that amx platinum is
[329]
clearly better for someone who has
[331]
multiple cards
[332]
and doesn't really need to prioritize
[333]
stacking on points on everyday purchases
[336]
like dining
[336]
and strictly travel using the amex
[339]
travel website
[340]
but if you're an average joe like me who
[343]
travels on holidays and uses a large
[345]
portion of your expense
[346]
on dining racking up points on the chase
[349]
sapphire reserve
[350]
is going to be so much easier and now
[352]
we're going to talk about how the chase
[354]
sapphire reserve
[355]
is an actual credit card while the amex
[358]
platinum is a charge card
[360]
the key difference between credit cards
[362]
and charge cards
[363]
lies in your ability to carry a balance
[366]
that is rollover debt from one month to
[368]
the next charge cards look like credit
[369]
cards and function the same way
[371]
to make purchases they have many of the
[373]
same features from sign up bonuses
[375]
to rewards to travel perks but they're
[378]
designed to be paid off
[379]
immediately also with the charge card
[382]
you have no preset spending limit
[384]
but that doesn't mean you can go and buy
[386]
1 million beers
[387]
it just means the limit changes every
[390]
month you
[391]
will still have limits based on your use
[393]
of the card payment history credit
[395]
record and
[395]
other factors where with the credit card
[398]
your limit is preset so if you don't
[400]
want to go into credit card debt
[401]
mx might be your answer and now of
[404]
course
[405]
the moment y'all been waiting for the
[406]
protections and benefits
[408]
the platinum card gives access to
[410]
american express's
[411]
centurion lounges as well as delta sky
[413]
club and airspace lounges
[415]
you also get complimentary membership in
[417]
the priority pass select group
[419]
which grants access to more than one 000
[421]
airport lounges
[422]
however with the sapphire reserve it
[424]
only offers priority pass membership so
[426]
the american express card
[428]
single-handedly wins in this category
[430]
especially if you're a delta airlines
[432]
flyer
[432]
you're going to be able to really
[434]
maximize the lounge access and can
[436]
we take a moment right now to talk about
[438]
the centurion lounge
[439]
it is the best place on earth to be
[442]
what oh what are you talking about man
[444]
that might have been a little bit of an
[446]
exaggeration
[446]
but on a more serious note they do have
[449]
free drinks free alcoholic drinks free
[451]
food and hot showers which is a game
[453]
changer but honestly
[455]
i'm more a fan of the alcoholic drinks
[458]
nothing like flying with a little buzz
[460]
with both of these cards you're going to
[462]
be
[462]
offered great protection as well like
[465]
purchase protection
[466]
return protection and rental car
[468]
protection so with the purchase
[469]
protection
[470]
you're protected up to 90 days on new
[472]
purchases for 120 days against damage or
[476]
theft
[476]
up to 10 000 per claim and 50 000
[479]
per year and with rental car protection
[481]
you simply need to decline the rental
[483]
company's collision insurance
[485]
and charge the entire the entire rental
[487]
cost to your cart
[489]
coverage is primary and provides
[491]
reimbursement
[492]
up to 75 dollars for damages to the
[494]
rental car
[495]
and finally with return protection you
[497]
can be reimbursed for eligible items
[499]
that the store won't take back within 90
[501]
days of purchase
[502]
up to 500 per item or 1 000 per year
[505]
so really really great benefits and from
[507]
personal experience
[508]
the dispute process with american
[510]
express is so easy
[511]
and most of the times they will give you
[513]
the benefit of the doubt really showing
[515]
how they prioritize customer service
[518]
and before wrapping up this video i do
[520]
want to let y'all know
[522]
american express platinum despite being
[524]
a premium travel cart
[525]
is much easier to be approved for than
[528]
the chase sapphire reserve
[529]
you need really good credit to be
[531]
approved for the sapphire reserve
[532]
whereas with the amex plat
[534]
most people with good credit are
[536]
approved also chase has this like weird
[539]
524 rule meaning if you apply for more
[541]
than five cards in the past 24 months
[543]
chase will not approve you even if you
[546]
have great credit score
[547]
so shame on you chase for not getting
[549]
rid of that yet so
[551]
in summary i think the amx platinum is a
[553]
better premium travel card
[554]
if you already have other cards
[556]
maximizing points or cash back on
[558]
categories such as dining and groceries
[560]
and you really want a card that will
[562]
earn you status upgrades and make your
[564]
travel experience that much better
[566]
but if you really don't care about that
[568]
and want to maximize points and value
[570]
the sapphire reserve might be the better
[572]
card
[572]
for you if you did make it till the end
[574]
let me know what card you plan on
[576]
getting and thanks for watching till the
[577]
end
[578]
and make sure you smash that like button
[579]
if you didn't already because that's the
[581]
only way
[581]
the youtube algorithm is finally gonna
[584]
discover me
[585]
or maybe not i'll forever be lost
[587]
anyways thank you guys so much for
[589]
watching and you know how it goes
[590]
[Music]
[598]
peace
