What To Do When Friends Borrow Money and Don't Pay It Back - YouTube

What to do when friends borrow聽 money and don't pay it back?聽聽
[3]
So let me tell you a story. I used to聽 work at Domino's, and I had a co-worker聽聽
[7]
named Courtney. Now Courtney had a debit boyfriend聽 who just got out of jail and didn't have a job.聽聽
[14]
She also had a cigarette habit, and聽 of course, she had financial problems.聽聽
[18]
So she borrowed money from practically everyone聽 in the store. She borrowed money from Anthony,聽聽
[23]
from Jonathan, from Selena, from Whitney, from聽 this person, from that person like, practically,聽聽
[28]
everyone in the store, except from me. She owned聽 like $200 there, $300 there, $50 there, $80 there.
[36]
She just seemed to perpetuate borrowing money. She聽 never asked me for money I don't know why. Maybe聽聽
[42]
because I told everyone that I was saving up to聽 move out of Texas, and they knew I had financial聽聽
[47]
goals, so they didn't want to bother me. But she聽 did tell me or told everyone in the store one time聽聽
[52]
that she didn't have enough gas in the tank to get聽 her home and back to work the next day. I did feel聽聽
[59]
bad for her, and I gave her my credit card and I聽 said, "Here, buy gas and just give me my credit聽聽
[65]
card right back. I don't want to give you money聽 directly, but I do want to see on my receipt and聽聽
[69]
the credit card statement that you went and聽 bought gas. That's exactly what this is for,聽聽
[73]
and I'm not going to pay for anything else." She聽 did exactly that. She followed my instructions,聽聽
[76]
and came back to the store, gave me my card聽 back. That was a gift from me to her, not a loan.聽聽
[82]
But one day, she just stopped showing up to work.聽 Just disappeared, never came back ever again,聽聽
[88]
no one ever saw her. We don't even聽 know what happened to her. But she owed聽聽
[93]
a lot of money to the people in the store,聽 and of course, no one got their money back.
[98]
Next time you think about lending聽 someone money, think about this story,聽聽
[102]
okay? Don't give away your money like聽 that. But if someone borrowed money聽聽
[106]
from you and they're not paying you back,聽 and you do have their contact information,聽聽
[110]
and they are still in communication with聽 you, then there are a few things you can do.
[114]
If you had a written agreement then you can聽 technically sue them and take them to small聽聽
[119]
claims court. You can let them know before you do聽 that, that you're going to do that so that they聽聽
[123]
know that you're serious about it. If they still聽 won't pay you back, then you will follow through聽聽
[127]
with it. Another option is to let them know that聽 you're going to forgive their debt but they're聽聽
[132]
going to have to pay income taxes on it because聽 you're going to report that to the IRS because,聽聽
[137]
technically, if you loan them money and they're聽 not paying you back, that should be considered聽聽
[142]
income to them, right? They should聽 be paying taxes on it. But I'm not聽聽
[145]
so sure exactly what the procedure is to聽 be able to do this. So you might want to聽聽
[149]
contact your tax accountant about your聽 situation if you want to go this route.
[153]
A third option, if this person has the good聽 intentions and goodwill to want to pay you back,聽聽
[161]
and they're in a better financial position聽 than when they borrowed money from you is they聽聽
[166]
can refinance the loan that they have with you.聽 They can take out a personal loan with the bank聽聽
[172]
and take out the amount that they owe you from聽 the bank and pay you back. Then instead of聽聽
[178]
owing you money anymore, they can owe the bank聽 money. That's an option if you guys have a good聽聽
[182]
relationship and this person wants to pay you back聽 and they have the financial means to do so now.
[188]
A fourth option is if this person does have聽 a very tight budget and they don't have much聽聽
[194]
money in their budget to be able to pay you back,聽 and it's really unlikely they will pay back, but聽聽
[200]
you want to keep good relations with this person聽 is ask them if there are items that have a value聽聽
[206]
that they have around the house that they don't聽 want and don't need anymore. The agreement should聽聽
[212]
be that you get to list the price that you're聽 going to sell it for, and you get to keep all聽聽
[217]
of the profit and all of the money that you make聽 from selling their stuff, you get to keep. If it's聽聽
[224]
still less than the amount that they owe you, then聽 just whatever, call it even and cut your losses,聽聽
[230]
and you can go back to the relationship聽 that you had before. That's an option聽聽
[234]
that doesn't affect their budget as much, but you聽 will still at least get some of your money back.
[241]
Then a fifth option, which is, honestly, I think聽 if a friend who borrows money from you and doesn't聽聽
[251]
pay you back, are they your friend? If I looked聽 at it and I tried to give myself advice, if I were聽聽
[257]
in this position, I would say, this person is not聽 your friend, and I would say, cut your losses. If聽聽
[265]
you lend someone like $200, $500, whatever, then I聽 would consider that your lesson. That's the lesson聽聽
[273]
that you learn from lending someone money and they聽 don't pay you back and you know not to do that in聽聽
[276]
the future without some sort of written agreement聽 or payment schedule, because honestly, if I聽聽
[281]
weren't in a good financial situation and I needed聽 money right now, borrowing money from friends聽聽
[286]
and family would absolutely be a last resort. It聽 wouldn't even be the first option I would go with.
[292]
The first thing I would do is I would聽 sell my stuff to make money immediately,聽聽
[296]
right? The second thing I would do is聽 I would take on a second part-time job,聽聽
[299]
and I wouldn't even care if it paid minimum聽 wage because at least that's a reliable source聽聽
[304]
of income where I know for a fact that I聽 can support myself and I don't need to ask聽聽
[308]
other people for money. Then the third option is I聽 would charge it to a credit card. A fourth option,聽聽
[313]
a personal loan from the bank where I would聽 have a payment schedule with the bank.
[318]
Then, finally, the fifth and last option, which is聽 I would hopefully never have to do this in my life聽聽
[325]
is to borrow money from friends and family. But聽 apparently, not everyone thinks like this. There聽聽
[331]
are some people who think borrowing money from聽 friends is basically gift money that comes with聽聽
[336]
nagging attached, and they don't consider it聽 a priority to pay you back. So there are some聽聽
[341]
people that borrow money from friends and family,聽 knowing full well that someone like you could聽聽
[345]
use the money for other things in your life,聽 but they don't consider it a priority to pay聽聽
[350]
you back. Instead, they tell you about how last聽 weekend they went to Chicago for their birthday,聽聽
[355]
or they went to the spa, or they just bought聽 a new video game. But for some reason,聽聽
[360]
paying you back seems to be on the bottom of their聽 priority list. Right? I don't know if someone like聽聽
[367]
that is someone I would call a real friend, and聽 I don't think that's someone I would be able to聽聽
[372]
trust because if I can't trust someone to pay聽 me back, I don't know. Is that person my friend?
[380]
The last and fifth option is to cut your聽 losses, say goodbye to this person because聽聽
[384]
I don't think this person is worth聽 the time and energy in your life.
[388]
Okay, guys. If your friend borrowed聽 money from you and won't pay you back,聽聽
[391]
