Channel: unknown
[8]
Hey everyone, Laura from聽
Nanny Parent Connection here.
[10]
Today I'm going to talk about the聽
top 10 questions I get from parents聽聽
[14]
who are curious about working with a nanny.
[16]
Question number 6 in my top 10聽
questions about working with a nanny聽聽
[20]
is, how do I pay my nanny, do I pay my聽
nanny over the table, or under the table?
[24]
The right answer there is, you probably聽
want to pay your nanny over the table.
[28]
Because that is the legal way to do it.
[30]
Many many people do pay their nannies under聽
the table, but that's not without its risks.
[34]
We actually did a nice video blog about this a聽
few weeks ago, check that out in the description聽聽
[40]
below there's a link for that, and you can聽
learn more about what some of those risks are.聽
[45]
It's worth mentioning that there is a lot聽
that goes into paying your nanny illegally.
[50]
If you're good with numbers, I particularly聽
am not, they are just not my thing!聽
[54]
we do have some talented parents out there who聽
are number whizzes, maybe some accountants,聽聽
[59]
awesome set it up, do it, knock it out.
[63]
If you have some time every couple of weeks to聽
dedicate to payroll once you get things set up,聽聽
[68]
go for it. There are lots of tools聽
out there to help make that easier,聽聽
[72]
I think QuickBooks is one,聽
lots of payroll software!聽
[75]
But if it's not your thing, if you have a new聽
baby in the house, maybe you're sleep deprived,聽聽
[80]
or you're going back to work and trying to figure聽
out different schedules, you just don't have time!
[85]
I definitely recommend handing聽
it off to a payroll company.聽聽
[88]
Nanny Parent Connection has partnered聽
with a fantastic payroll company,聽聽
[92]
you can find that link for more聽
information in the description below.聽
[95]
You just fill out a form and it submits some聽
information to them, they reach out and they聽聽
[99]
can help you get all set up. It's really quick聽
and easy, it saves the headaches of "Are my taxes聽聽
[105]
being done correctly.?, and it ensures everybody's聽
getting paid correctly and getting paid on time.
[111]
So, check that out and my recommendation is to聽
pay your nanny the right way. Pay them legally聽聽
[117]
and maybe consider using a payroll company.
[120]
Question number 7 in my top 10 questions for聽
working with a nanny is, what are nanny taxes?
[126]
Your nanny taxes are social security and medicare,聽
together those are called the FICA taxes.聽
[132]
They can make up about 10% of your nanny's聽
gross pay that's definitely a chunk of change,聽聽
[138]
and there are some ways that聽
you can offset that cost.
[141]
There's the child and dependent care tax聽
credit that you can write off at the end of聽聽
[147]
the year when doing your taxes. If you have聽
a dependent care account through your own聽聽
[152]
employer definitely take advantage of that.聽
That will be a nice way to set aside some funds聽聽
[158]
pre-tax in order to utilize those for child care.
So, check out some of those options, just keep in聽聽
[164]
mind when you're budgeting that the nanny taxes聽
they do makeup about 10% of the nanny's gross pay.
[171]
Question number 8 in my top 10 questions聽
about working with a nanny are,聽聽
[175]
what are the most common job聽
responsibilities for a nanny?
[178]
so, nannies by definition are in charge of聽
everything surrounding the care and safety of聽聽
[182]
the children. That can include help with babies聽
laundry, or the kid's laundry, which can also聽聽
[187]
include help with washing bottles. But that does聽
not include things like the family laundry, or聽聽
[193]
weekly vacuuming, or I use the example聽
of walking the dog or grocery shopping.
[198]
Those things fall outside of the job聽
description for typical nanny duties. So,聽聽
[204]
if you're adding in those things, and by聽
the way, if you're getting care in your聽聽
[208]
home make it what you want. Just make聽
sure you're compensating appropriately.
[214]
Make sure that any of those types of job duties聽
are listed in the contract they're agreed upon,聽聽
[220]
and you're compensating appropriately. So, that's聽
going to mean if you have things that are outside聽聽
[224]
of just care of the children that you're聽
probably going to pay 2 to 3 dollars per hour聽聽
[230]
or more depending on the exact duties聽
and the experience of your care provider.聽
[235]
Who doesn't want meal prep done right, Sign me up,聽
just make sure you're compensating appropriately.
[242]
Question number 9 in my top 10聽
questions about working with a nanny is,聽聽
[246]
can I ask my nanny to do household聽
chores while the kids are sleeping?
[250]
Yes absolutely, but it's really really important聽
to recognize that nannying is a very unique job.聽聽
[257]
Nannies are always on the go, there's always聽
something to be done. They're not truly getting a聽聽
[262]
lunch break when the kids are eating lunch right!聽
Because, they might need to be feeding the baby,聽聽
[267]
or the toddler always is gonna want聽
something right! They might spill something,聽聽
[272]
they're just things right! Kids always need聽
things to be done, and so the nanny really聽聽
[278]
really doesn't get a chance to truly have a聽
moment to unwind, until the kids are napping.
[284]
So .just be cognizant of that right make sure you聽
tell your nanny "Hey, I recognize that this is a聽聽
[290]
full-on go-go-go type of job and we聽
appreciate that you give it your all,聽聽
[294]
and we really really want you to make聽
sure that you're taking some time for you聽聽
[299]
every day when there's nap time."聽
but just make sure that your nanny聽聽
[303]
is aware that you're thinking about her. You want聽
her to feel well cared for and well recharged聽聽
[308]
throughout her day. Not only is she going to聽
appreciate that about you as an employer and聽聽
[314]
appreciate that about her job, but it's also聽
going to make her day a little bit better.
[318]
She's going to return the favor by聽
being the best nanny for your family.聽
[322]
So, just be aware it's definitely okay聽
to ask the nanny to do some tidying聽聽
[327]
during the times where the kids are聽
sleeping, or having their quiet time.聽聽
[331]
Maybe she uses that time to catch up with some聽
dishes or tidying up the play area things like聽聽
[337]
that. But, also just be aware that sometimes聽
maybe she catches up on a personal phone call,聽聽
[342]
just takes a breather enjoys her lunch, or maybe聽
recharges by reading her book for a few minutes.
[348]
Question number 10 my top 10 questions聽
about working with a nanny is,聽聽
[353]
what are the standard benefits to offer a nanny?
[355]
There are some industry-standard聽
benefits when working with nannies.
[359]
So, you're going to want to offer two聽
weeks of paid time off, guaranteed hours,聽聽
[364]
and mileage reimbursement. You're also going to聽
want to consider offering a healthcare stipend if聽聽
[369]
your nanny is maybe more experienced. Maybe聽
you're having a hard time filling the role,聽聽
[375]
that can be a really nice thing to offer to聽
help attract more candidates to your position.聽聽
[379]
Also, if you just want to make sure that you're聽
making your nanny feel very well cared for聽聽
[384]
and you're financially able to do so, that聽
is a really really great thing to offer.
[388]
So, I'm going to walk through聽
each of these and just give a聽聽
[390]
little breakdown about what standard to offer.
[393]
So, for vacation, you're going to want to offer聽
two weeks of paid vacation. Some families try to聽聽
[398]
get one week of the nanny's choice, one week of聽
the family's choice. If that's what you must do,聽聽
[405]
have a conversation with your nanny and find聽
something that works for him or her, but also聽聽
[410]
be aware that that's just not really the standard.
A good question to think about is, how would you聽聽
[414]
feel if you at your corporate job were told聽
when you couldn't take your vacation time?
[419]
That wouldn't sit well with me and I'm guessing聽
it probably wouldn't sit well with you either!聽
[424]
So, just be aware of what you're actually asking聽
them to take their vacation at your choosing.聽聽
[430]
So, while that's really beneficial to you,聽
that might not work really well for your nanny.聽聽
[434]
So, it is standard to offer your nanny two聽
weeks of paid time off of their own choosing.聽聽
[440]
Just keep that in mind, if you have a聽
very experienced nanny they may even聽聽
[443]
ask for more weeks of daytime聽
off and that's pretty typical.
[448]
Guaranteed hours. This is really聽
an important thing to offer.聽聽
[452]
You're going to want to make sure you聽
guarantee hours so that your nanny聽聽
[455]
knows that they can count on a聽
certain amount of income each week.
[458]
So, guaranteed hours will kick in if for example,聽
you take a vacation and you're gone for the week,聽聽
[464]
and you're taking the work with you AKA the child聽
or children, and the nanny is available to work.聽聽
[471]
But, because you're on vacation she cannot聽
work! So, that's something to think about,聽聽
[476]
you should still be paying your nanny聽
and that's what we call guaranteed hours.
[480]
This is also the same model if you聽
had your child in preschool or daycare聽聽
[484]
you would pay for the month's tuition, whether or聽
not you were going to be there the whole month,聽聽
[488]
and that is so you reserve the聽
spot at the daycare for your child聽聽
[493]
and so the spot is there when聽
you get back from your vacation.
[496]
So, it's a really great way to make聽
your nanny feel well cared for,聽聽
[500]
it's the right thing to do as an employer, and聽
everyone should be offering guaranteed hours.
[506]
So for mileage reimbursement, you want to offer聽
your nanny the IRS standard rate which for 2021聽聽
[511]
is 56 cents per miles driven. The irs changes聽
this every year, so it actually went down this聽聽
[517]
year from last year, and this is for any miles聽
driven in the nanny's car while on the job.
[524]
So, this has nothing to do with the commute聽
to, or from this is only while on the job聽聽
[528]
so this could be anything from driving the聽
children around to activities, or school聽聽
[533]
to maybe running an errand for the family,聽
anything like that. Any on-the-job miles聽聽
[538]
that your nanny is driving those should聽
be tracked and those should be reimbursed.
[543]
Paid holidays. It's very standard聽
for seven paid holidays to be offered聽聽
[548]
I've seen as few as five, I've seen as many as聽
thirteen. There's a lot of flexibility here,聽聽
[554]
but offering paid holidays is a really really聽
nice thing to add to the compensation package.聽聽
[560]
It is a nanny industry standard and聽
it's a good employer thing to do.
[565]
For healthcare stipends,聽聽
[567]
this isn't as standard but I do see this being聽
pretty standard for your more experienced nannies.
[573]
So, if you're looking to attract a more聽
experienced nanny to your position,聽聽
[576]
you may want to start out by offering a health聽
care stipend. I've seen as little as $150 dollars聽聽
[582]
to $350 being pretty standard. And of course,聽
that can go up or down from that range. Offering聽聽
[589]
a healthcare stipend for your nanny goes a long聽
way to make your nanny feel well cared for.
[593]
It can attract really top-notch聽
applicants to your position聽聽
[597]
and it's something to consider offering聽
if you're financially able to do so.
[601]
All right everyone, that's it for聽
today. Those are my top 10 questions I聽聽
[604]
most frequently get asked聽
about working with a nanny.
[607]
I hope this information was helpful,聽
I hope it paints a clearer picture of聽聽
[613]
what kind of goes into working with a nanny,聽聽
[615]
for anybody who's considering working聽
with a nanny, and maybe hasn't before.
