Zoom High Fidelity Music Mode for Online Music Lessons - YouTube

Channel: Music Repo

[0]
hello and welcome back this is an
[3]
updated version of my ultra popular
[6]
zoom in music mode video that i made
[8]
earlier this year
[10]
that video explained how to adjust the
[13]
audio settings in zoom
[14]
to make sure your music sounded as good
[17]
as possible
[18]
for your online music lessons your
[20]
online fitness classes
[22]
virtual choirs and so on zoom is an
[25]
excellent tool for running online events
[28]
and teaching but the default audio
[30]
settings will play
[31]
havoc with any music streaming the noise
[34]
suppression algorithms in zoom will make
[36]
your audio choppy
[37]
and cut in and out and so your students
[40]
will not have a good
[42]
experience fortunately you can do
[45]
something about this
[46]
and just recently zoom added high
[48]
fidelity music mode
[50]
so now you can get even better quality
[53]
audio
[54]
plus i have addressed some of your
[56]
frequently asked questions too
[58]
this video is divided into a few
[60]
sections firstly
[62]
how to optimize all the audio settings
[64]
for music in zoom including
[66]
all the advanced tweaks and that new
[67]
high fidelity music mode
[70]
how to share audio files from your
[72]
computer
[73]
how to stream in stereo how to access
[75]
the settings on a mobile device
[77]
and finally a quick look at the issue of
[80]
latency
[81]
in zoom many people want to use zoom for
[83]
live jamming and collaboration
[85]
unfortunately this is not possible due
[87]
to sync issues but i do discuss
[89]
a couple of resources and strategies you
[92]
could use instead
[93]
i hope this will be a useful update for
[95]
you i post
[96]
regular videos on home studio recording
[98]
made easy
[99]
so if that is of interest to you please
[101]
subscribe
[102]
give the video a thumbs up if you find
[104]
it helpful and if you have
[105]
any comments or questions then do post
[108]
them below i love to read them and it
[109]
helps me decide what content to produce
[111]
next to help you
[112]
out finally i have written an in-depth
[115]
step-by-step guide to
[117]
zoom in music mode on my website so do
[120]
check that out for further details okay
[122]
let's crack on and
[124]
optimize that audio
[127]
now remember that zoom out of the box
[130]
with the default settings
[132]
is optimized for conferencing
[136]
in noisy office environments so it has
[138]
lots of built-in algorithms
[140]
to suppress fan noise and air
[142]
conditioning noise scraping of chairs
[145]
and to smooth out your voice
[149]
as you speak in a conference environment
[151]
which is great
[152]
if that's what you want to do but if you
[154]
want to use zoom for a fitness class
[156]
or for a music lesson or for any music
[159]
application
[160]
then it will play havoc with your music
[163]
stream
[164]
and you'll find that it chops in and out
[167]
so we
[167]
need to do some modification to the
[170]
settings to get back control
[172]
of our audio here's how we do it so when
[174]
you open up the zoom desktop client make
[176]
sure you're on the home
[177]
screen and then you can access the
[180]
settings here
[180]
go down to audio here and the first
[183]
thing you'll do
[184]
is set up your speakers and microphone
[186]
test them out
[187]
and so on now i would first of all
[190]
uncheck this box here automatically
[193]
adjust
[193]
microphone volume so that i could get
[196]
control of the microphone volume myself
[199]
now here the mic i have got selected i
[201]
can adjust the
[202]
levels here if you have an audio
[204]
interface then you
[205]
adjust the settings on the device itself
[208]
so
[208]
turn that off get back control of your
[211]
own levels don't worry about this
[212]
suppress background noise thing here
[214]
we're about to override it
[216]
by going into the advanced settings now
[218]
you'll see the default
[220]
is the echo cancellation is set on auto
[223]
just leave that
[224]
because this is the crucial thing
[227]
this show in meeting option to enable
[229]
original sound from microphone
[231]
if you hover here this option
[234]
automatically disables zoom noise
[236]
suppression removes high pass filtering
[237]
removes automatic gain control it is
[239]
recommended for playing music and for
[241]
studio-like environments
[242]
perfect this is exactly what we want to
[244]
do and we check
[245]
this box here now just by checking this
[248]
box
[249]
and enabling original sound within the
[251]
meeting you will significantly improve
[254]
your audio stream because you will
[255]
remove all the choppiness that you get
[258]
if you don't do this
[259]
so that is going to be good enough for
[262]
most people
[264]
especially if you have a pupil who is
[266]
playing to you just make sure that they
[268]
have done that and then their audio
[270]
stream won't be
[271]
interrupted but if you want to go
[273]
further then there are two more options
[275]
let's have a look first at this one this
[277]
is a new one
[278]
high fidelity music mode okay so if we
[281]
check
[282]
that now i recommend that you check this
[285]
if you are using
[287]
good quality audio hardware for example
[290]
an audio interface or an external
[291]
microphone
[292]
you can use it with your built-in
[294]
microphone but it's probably
[295]
not worth it although again you can
[297]
experiment with this yourself
[300]
now if we hover over here you'll see
[302]
that this optimizes zoom
[304]
audio for the highest quality music so
[306]
you'll get the highest quality setting
[308]
by ticking this box here
[310]
your audio will be transmitting at 48
[312]
kilohertz and if it's stereo it'll be
[314]
192 kilobits per second
[317]
so it is going to significantly improve
[319]
the quality especially if you've got the
[321]
hardware to go with it
[323]
but it will increase your cpu
[326]
utilization so you will just have to be
[327]
aware of that and be careful
[329]
that you're not running software with
[330]
too many plug-ins and really maxing out
[333]
on your cpu
[334]
keep an eye on that the other thing is
[336]
that it does consume
[337]
greater bandwidth the best situation is
[340]
going to be
[341]
if you have an ethernet connection if
[343]
you are on wi-fi you might find this
[345]
will struggle more unless you've got
[347]
very high quality wi-fi and you're quite
[348]
near the router the other thing you can
[350]
do
[350]
is you can disable echo cancellation and
[353]
again i recommend you do that because it
[355]
is fiddling with the sound again the
[357]
echo it's talking about is when you hear
[358]
your voice echoing back at yourself
[361]
when you're speaking in general if
[362]
you're hearing an echo it means there is
[364]
a device out there
[366]
in your lesson or choir or whatever that
[370]
is channeling your audio back to you
[373]
and so you will need to ask your users
[375]
to look at their settings
[377]
it will work best and if you look on
[379]
this and
[380]
hover over it says about a headset what
[382]
it means is it'll work best if people
[384]
are wearing headphones
[386]
rather than having speakers because it's
[388]
having a speaker
[389]
that is playing back your audio that is
[391]
then picked up by their microphone that
[392]
is going to be doing the echoing so a
[394]
good quality set of headphones
[396]
will improve that but i would
[399]
tick the box so that you've got full
[402]
control of your audio
[403]
okay now then let's start a meeting up
[406]
you'll see that every time you start a
[407]
meeting
[408]
you will need to turn on original sound
[412]
like that and by turning on original
[415]
sound
[416]
you will then benefit from those
[420]
settings
[420]
you have made in the audio settings
[423]
so you can access them anytime in the
[425]
meeting by clicking the arrow here and
[427]
going to audio settings
[429]
and just checking what you've got set
[432]
here
[433]
okay but by turning on original sound
[436]
you're accessing the high fidelity audio
[438]
the echo cancellation the noise
[439]
suppression all those things
[441]
that now is you optimized for your audio
[444]
stream
[445]
right while we are here i'll mention
[447]
something else
[450]
if you have audio files that you want to
[452]
play music tracks that you want to play
[454]
within
[455]
your meeting then the way you can do
[457]
that is by using this
[459]
share screen option here when you click
[461]
that button
[462]
you'll end up on this basic mode here
[464]
and if you had
[466]
a piece of software running that had got
[469]
audio
[470]
running as well that you wanted to share
[471]
then you could just simply choose share
[473]
computer stand here you'd be sharing
[475]
your screen
[476]
and your sound but if we go to the
[478]
advanced setting here
[479]
it could be that you just have a music
[481]
file you want to play
[482]
and you can do that by clicking this
[485]
icon here now by doing that you will be
[487]
sharing your computer audio and what
[490]
your participants will then experience
[492]
is
[493]
you speaking like this into a microphone
[496]
but when you press play they will hear
[498]
the computer sound the track that you
[500]
want to share
[501]
so that's how you share audio within
[504]
zoom
[504]
so let's stop the meeting there because
[508]
we have covered all the aspects that we
[510]
need to do there
[513]
right i want to show you something else
[515]
if you want to
[516]
enable stereo audio then this is how you
[520]
go about
[520]
it you need to go to the zoom.us
[523]
website and sign in so we're in the
[526]
website now you can't do this in the
[528]
desktop client you do this on the
[531]
website
[532]
so i've signed in and i go to account
[535]
management here and account settings
[538]
now when i am there i get various
[542]
options for how my meetings are going to
[545]
run
[546]
and you'll see that if you scroll down
[548]
one of the options
[550]
is to allow users to select stereo audio
[554]
in their client settings
[556]
so what this actually does is allows you
[559]
to
[560]
select stereo audio within your desktop
[562]
which we'll have a look at in a minute
[564]
so turn that
[565]
on if you want to use stereo
[568]
audio now the other thing you can do
[572]
is you can allow users to select
[574]
original sound in their client
[576]
settings so you may want to do that
[579]
if you have pupils who you would like to
[583]
be able to direct
[584]
to turn on original sound if they're
[586]
going to play back to you
[589]
okay so now having done that i'm
[591]
actually going to restart
[593]
zoom and so i'm starting up the desktop
[596]
client there
[597]
now if i go to the settings here and go
[600]
to the audio settings
[602]
and go to the advanced you'll see that a
[605]
new option has appeared here
[608]
under the show in meeting option to
[609]
enable original sound i can now
[611]
use stereo audio if i want to now
[614]
remember
[615]
this increases cpu utilization
[618]
and consumes more bandwidth a stereo
[620]
file is twice the size
[622]
of a mono file and likewise the stereo
[624]
stream is double what a mono stream is
[627]
but it does allow you to transmit in
[629]
stereo which you may wish to do
[631]
and so that is how you do it first of
[633]
all you sign into the zoom
[634]
web portal and enable it there and then
[637]
it becomes an
[638]
option within the client software here
[641]
on the desktop if you're using zoom on a
[645]
mobile device
[646]
then you will need to access the
[648]
settings
[650]
and make sure that you have
[653]
enabled the option to use original sound
[656]
you'll find that every time you start a
[658]
meeting you will need to enable
[660]
original sound each time
[663]
unfortunately on a mobile device you
[664]
don't have all the extra bells and
[666]
whistles that you have
[668]
in the desktop client but it does enable
[671]
you to at least get rid of all the
[674]
choppy audio if you're using your
[676]
ipad for a fitness class or something or
[679]
if it is your pupil
[681]
who is using an ipad to play to you
[685]
one of the questions i get asked a lot
[688]
is how to use zoom for live performance
[690]
and collaborations
[691]
you see videos like this one all over
[693]
the internet and want to do something
[695]
similar
[696]
for instance run a virtual choir or
[698]
orchestra
[699]
play duets with your pupils jam with
[702]
your bandmates etc
[704]
unfortunately you cannot do this in zoom
[708]
videos like this one look like zoom but
[710]
they have been created by all the
[712]
performers
[713]
playing individually in advance along
[715]
with a click track
[716]
then the videos have been put together
[717]
in a montage in zoom
[719]
there is too much latency so if you try
[722]
to perform alongside other people you
[725]
will be out of sync
[726]
this really disappoints people but there
[729]
are other strategies
[730]
you can use to create a good experience
[732]
in zoom
[733]
in the description below i've linked to
[734]
a couple of videos which i think are
[736]
excellent
[737]
get ready for online music lessons is by
[739]
a saxophone teacher with a lot of
[740]
experience describing strategies he uses
[743]
for example sending a backing track in
[745]
advance that a pupil can play along to
[748]
the zoom tutorial for coral conductors
[750]
is quite lengthy but covers a lot of
[752]
strategies
[753]
you could use now my own experience of
[755]
participating in a virtual choir via
[757]
zoom is with the nottingham voice
[759]
collective run by abby moore
[761]
she is a brilliant arranger of acapella
[763]
versions of popular songs
[765]
which you can see in action on her
[767]
youtube channel once a month she's
[769]
running virtual
[770]
acapella choir workshops at the moment
[772]
which are great fun to participate in
[774]
her strategy is to create recordings of
[777]
each part
[778]
the soprano alto tenor and bass with the
[780]
other parts partially muted
[782]
and then a recording of the entire
[784]
arrangement during
[786]
the workshop she mutes all participants
[788]
then teaches each part using the sound
[790]
files
[790]
at the end you perform the finished
[792]
arrangement by singing along
[795]
you get all the experience of singing
[797]
alongside other parts and because you
[798]
can see all the
[799]
other participants joining in you have a
[802]
great social experience too
[803]
and this works really well as a singing
[806]
experience
[807]
if in doubt then do consider signing up
[809]
and giving it a try
[810]
you'll find a link to her website below
[813]
it is a strategy that works well on zoom
[815]
but obviously takes quite a bit of
[817]
advanced prep
[819]
so the upshot is you can't do
[822]
live collaboration in zoom but you can
[825]
use other strategies well i hope you
[828]
have found that helpful
[830]
and you're raring to go with your online
[832]
teaching and music making
[834]
if you liked it please do give it a
[836]
thumbs up do post any comments or
[838]
questions below
[839]
please subscribe if you want to get more

[842]
tricks
[843]
thank you for watching and hopefully i
[845]
will see you again
[847]
soon
