Therapist Says Ultra-Rich Are MISERABLE - YouTube
Channel: The Young Turks
[0]
there was a fascinating new opinion
[2]
piece in the guardian confirming our
[4]
suspicions that rich men do indeed cry
[11]
i care
[16]
[Music]
[17]
that's it
[22]
it never gets old like that little
[23]
quivering lip it's it's delicious to me
[25]
the best part is the quivering chin i
[27]
didn't know your chin could
[30]
the i'm gonna be taxed a little bit
[33]
yeah remember he's crying over a
[35]
proposed wealth tax that that was what
[37]
that segment and those tears were about
[39]
now uh luckily uh we have an expert
[42]
weighing in on wealthy people and how
[45]
damaged they really are
[47]
okay this is such a fascinating op-ed
[50]
because
[51]
i always felt that if you're wealthy you
[53]
have an obligation a responsibility to
[55]
everyone to enjoy that wealth you know
[58]
but that is not what's happening so this
[61]
was um written by uh clay cockrell and
[64]
uh it's titled i'm a therapist to the
[67]
super rich they are as miserable as
[70]
succession makes out and of course
[72]
that's a reference to the hbo hit show
[74]
succession which you all should be
[76]
watching right now because it's
[77]
fantastic but um i think the takeaway
[80]
from this is even better so i'm going to
[81]
read a few excerpts and then we'll
[83]
discuss
[84]
succession is built on the idea of a
[86]
group of wealthy children vying for who
[88]
will take the mantle from their father
[91]
none of them are able to convince him
[93]
that they can do it and that is because
[96]
they have reached adulthood completely
[98]
unprepared to take on all responsibility
[101]
i think that's a good description
[102]
without giving any spoilers away right
[105]
now um
[106]
he also writes that over the years i
[109]
have developed a great deal of empathy
[111]
for those who have far too much
[114]
the television program succession now in
[116]
its third third season does such a good
[118]
job of exploring the kinds of toxic
[121]
excess my clients struggle with that
[124]
when my wife is watching it i have to
[126]
leave the room it just feels like work
[129]
so what he's doing here is really um
[132]
justifying some of the anguish that
[134]
ultra wealthy people experience and
[137]
obviously these are difficulties that
[139]
are very different from what the vast
[141]
majority of people experience i would
[143]
argue not being able to
[145]
pay for shelter or provide food for your
[148]
family like
[149]
that is clearly something that needs to
[151]
be addressed and i think should take
[152]
priority in our society however if you
[155]
are raised in a
[157]
fabulously wealthy family as tucker
[158]
carlson was you know as the heir of the
[160]
uh swanson fortune
[162]
um i mean i think carlson is a perfect
[165]
example of how damaged you can end up
[167]
being right and it's because of a number
[169]
of different factors uh the fact that
[172]
you might not feel you have any purpose
[174]
in life because you don't have to work
[176]
for things like other people do um so
[180]
as uh cockrell writes in this op-ed
[183]
well what would it be like if you
[185]
couldn't trust those close to you or if
[188]
you looked at any new person in your
[190]
life with deep suspicion i hear this
[192]
from my clients all the time what do
[194]
they want from me or how are they going
[196]
to manipulate me or they are probably
[199]
only friends with me because of my money
[202]
okay so let's stop right there jank
[204]
weigh in
[205]
yes so this story uh has been conflicted
[208]
it's a roller coaster ride so i'm gonna
[210]
take you through the whole roller
[211]
coaster but first okay yes definitely
[213]
buckle up uh
[215]
first let me just double down on what
[217]
anna said succession is such a great
[218]
show it's executive producers are adam
[220]
mckay and will ferrell uh and adam mckee
[222]
right now the single uh most successful
[225]
producer and director in hollywood he
[226]
did the big short he'd advice he's got
[228]
the leonardo dicaprio movie don't look
[230]
up coming out and he's a huge
[232]
progressive not only has he been on the
[234]
show he watches the show like you guys
[236]
do okay and i ran into will ferrell once
[238]
and he's had nice things to say about
[239]
the show so it's wonderful to see actual
[241]
progressives putting out this message
[244]
and and they're right it's modeled on
[246]
the murdoch family and every time i
[248]
watch it i have great shot in florida
[250]
and i feel so good about myself because
[253]
i'm like oh it turns out these
[255]
incredibly wealthy right wingers
[258]
are neurotic messes
[260]
and they're and they're disastrous
[262]
they're miserable they're totally
[264]
miserable and i feel great about it
[266]
agreed no uh that's the beginning of the
[268]
roller coaster now i don't feel
[271]
since i'm such a
[273]
bleeding heart lib i don't feel great
[275]
that all rich people feel miserable no
[278]
when it comes to the right wing and the
[279]
murdochs of the world who are doing so
[281]
much damage to the rest of us and all
[283]
those republican donors who are
[285]
in favor of their tax cuts those guys i
[287]
have no sympathy for okay so now
[292]
look
[293]
is it true
[294]
or is this just like oh cry me a river
[297]
about how rich you are and everybody
[299]
wants your money and stuff no it's true
[301]
they are actually miserable and it's not
[303]
just this guy saying it every
[305]
interaction that i have had with ultra
[307]
wealthy folks
[308]
they're not in some magical la la land
[310]
where they're all super happy like
[313]
hey we made it we've got money you
[315]
assume that because that's how you would
[317]
feel because you were poor or middle
[319]
class and you've always thought like oh
[321]
if i could just get that and then i
[323]
would feel great etc but they didn't
[325]
grow up that way so let me just let me
[327]
contextualize this further because i
[328]
think it's important so um the very
[331]
people in this country who have
[333]
exploited a system that's rigged in
[336]
their favor which makes them fabulously
[338]
wealthy
[339]
and other people struggle
[342]
still doesn't make them happy it's not
[343]
good enough because that comes along
[345]
with a whole host of other issues
[347]
including are my friends really my
[349]
friends because they like me and do i
[352]
really serve a purpose in life so yeah i
[354]
think that context matters and and look
[356]
i let me just get this off my chest
[358]
right away i don't feel bad for them at
[361]
all like zero percent i feel zero
[363]
empathy for
[364]
oh
[366]
oh do you feel do you feel like maybe
[368]
your friends aren't genuine cry me a
[371]
goddamn river okay are you living in a
[372]
cardboard box on the sidewalk i don't
[374]
think so oh do you feel like maybe you
[376]
don't have purpose in life go find
[378]
purpose don't cry about it okay
[381]
you have endless resources endless
[384]
resources to to
[387]
carve a path of your own without having
[389]
to rely on mama and papa to do
[391]
everything for you i know it's tough
[393]
it's tough when you have someone wiping
[395]
your ass for you every single day and
[397]
you have servants doing everything for
[399]
you it's tough to get out of that
[400]
comfort zone and actually have to work
[402]
for something but if you want to find
[403]
purpose work for it okay after your
[406]
therapy session maybe think about what
[408]
you want to do with your life
[410]
so
[411]
i i'm definitely more conflicted than
[413]
anna on this because
[414]
um
[415]
of two reasons and then i'll go back to
[418]
supporting it okay
[419]
so
[420]
number one it's so hard for us to
[423]
understand how they grew up they they
[426]
have they
[428]
never had to work for anything
[430]
and so
[432]
and i say this i i get how deeply ironic
[434]
it is right but it sapped them of the
[437]
best part of life the best to me the
[440]
best part of life is fulfillment that's
[442]
why i talked to you guys like hey get
[444]
involved go join wolf pack or just
[445]
democrats rebellion by whatever or
[447]
whatever your local group is because
[448]
fulfillment's a hell of a drug when you
[451]
actually work for something and you get
[453]
it accomplished it feels so good nothing
[456]
feels better than that but they've never
[458]
experienced that their whole lives
[460]
and
[461]
everyone around them is also incredibly
[463]
wealthy and spoiled
[465]
and generally miserable
[467]
so
[468]
they're in a bubble
[470]
they have no idea how we feel about them
[473]
and whenever they get they hear
[475]
oh they're going to do a billionaire tax
[477]
or whatever like that
[478]
they think oh the masses are evil
[482]
and they're coming to get our money and
[483]
all they they didn't they never worked
[485]
for and they just want our money and
[487]
everyone around them says the same thing
[489]
so they really think they're right that
[491]
they're the victims
[492]
and i know it seems impossible to
[494]
believe how could they possibly think
[496]
that but they genuinely do right now
[498]
that doesn't necessarily make it any
[500]
better right but i'm telling you how
[502]
they actually think
[503]
and so
[504]
but i've seen it with my own eyes
[507]
they are really miserable
[509]
they never find happiness because they
[511]
don't they didn't earn it
[513]
uh they're constantly worried that
[515]
people are gonna take their money
[516]
they're obsessed with greed in in the
[519]
book that is almost almost done justice
[521]
is coming is the name of my book and
[523]
just you could pre-order it at
[525]
justicecomingbook.com i have a section
[527]
called
[528]
greed is dumb
[529]
and i tell you why
[531]
we as progressives are smarter than the
[533]
richest people in the world
[535]
because if your goal is money
[538]
it's never enough
[540]
it's an endless cycle of greed so
[542]
they're always like more i need more
[544]
they are they're just like gollum
[546]
they really talk and nailed it precious
[550]
dude just you already have enough enjoy
[554]
your schmucks
[555]
you schmuck of schmucks but they really
[557]
are that clueless but i mean think about
[560]
what it also takes to become
[563]
wealthy in a lot of different cases so
[567]
oftentimes i mean
[569]
there are people who will literally turn
[570]
on their own friends like dave rubin um
[573]
in order to acquire wealth but then what
[575]
are you left with
[577]
you're left in a room full of people who
[579]
don't like you don't respect you don't
[581]
really see you as a friend
[582]
uh you abandoned your real friends and
[585]
sure you live in a 5 million mansion but
[587]
it's pretty damn lonely in that mansion
[589]
where everyone in the outside world is
[591]
mocking you constantly right so that's a
[593]
little bit different anna because they
[594]
didn't grow up rich so the the reubens
[597]
and doors of the world they're crying in
[598]
their mansions all alone and yeah but my
[600]
point is like i get what you're saying
[602]
and there isn't there is a difference
[603]
like if you've
[605]
if you've been raised in a wealthy
[606]
family that that's a different
[608]
experience from um you know becoming
[610]
incredibly wealthy but my point is
[613]
wealth by itself is not something that's
[616]
going to make an individual happy what
[618]
makes what makes a person happy like
[620]
really stop and think about it
[621]
let's not joke ourselves obviously we
[623]
all need to have our basic needs met we
[626]
all need to have a roof over our heads
[628]
uh comfort in our lives and all of that
[630]
but your happiest moments in life are
[632]
not the moments where you're like coming
[634]
up with a ton of cash right it's the
[636]
moments where you get to enjoy
[639]
moments with your family right with your
[641]
friends when you have experiences when
[643]
you're at a concert with people when
[645]
you're um you're able to share an
[647]
experience with your loved ones when you
[649]
experience love with your partner right
[652]
intimacy like th that is what that's
[655]
like our
[657]
that's in our code like that's what
[658]
humans are right like a sense of
[661]
community and i think that in our
[664]
society in the united states there's
[666]
just always such an emphasis on property
[669]
on money on wealth on all the material
[672]
stuff that i think it kind of makes
[674]
people assume that money is like the
[678]
end-all be-all of creating happiness in
[680]
your life it doesn't create happiness
[682]
and in the case of these like people who
[684]
grow up in wealthy families
[686]
yeah since they've had everything handed
[687]
to them they don't know what it's like
[689]
to have to work hard and accomplish
[691]
something on your own and feel the
[693]
thrill of accomplishing something right
[694]
that's why they don't have this sense of
[696]
purpose but get over it you can
[699]
create a path for yourself you can use
[701]
the resources that you're super lucky to
[703]
have because of your wealthy family to
[705]
create a path for yourself
[707]
i mean siobhan could have done that she
[709]
could have been the campaign manager for
[711]
the you know bootleg bernie sanders but
[713]
she didn't do it because she wants
[714]
validation from daddy
[716]
i'm talking about succession sorry yeah
[718]
no absolutely yeah so last part of the
[720]
roller coaster here a couple turns left
[722]
real quick um look i've never heard
[725]
anyone say uh oh no you don't need money
[728]
unless they were rich okay
[730]
for poor folks and middle class folks
[732]
you know you need money um but at the
[734]
same time you shouldn't be obsessed with
[736]
it because
[738]
it's definitive it does not bring you
[740]
the happiness you think it brings you
[742]
and there's limits right there's
[743]
different thresholds you get to a
[745]
certain threshold actually 70 000 a year
[747]
we've showed you the studies before i'm
[750]
surprised it's that small that low right
[752]
and that's higher than the average uh
[754]
america's income but it's not like a
[756]
millionaire or anything you get to a
[758]
certain threshold where you're not
[759]
scared to death of of not being able to
[761]
pay the rent or the mortgage and and
[763]
getting humiliated etc you know not
[766]
being able to feed your kids once you
[767]
get past that threshold
[769]
then we're all nearly even and then i'm
[772]
sure there are other thresholds but once
[773]
you get to a point where you're at
[775]
extreme wealth
[777]
the incremental donald's dollars do not
[779]
help you at all they probably hurt you
[782]
right so and by the way but progressives
[785]
at the same time don't hate all wealthy
[786]
people that's crazy there's a lot of
[788]
wealthy people who started out poor
[789]
middle class and made it
[791]
and whether they started out middle
[793]
class or not there's a lot of wealthy
[794]
people who do good things in the world
[796]
so don't use it as a blanket statement
[798]
that's crazy and then the last turn is
[800]
this but if you're not obscenely wealthy
[803]
and but you're middle class you're
[804]
hanging in there you're doing all right
[806]
please enjoy life
[808]
there is no magical place where things
[810]
are filled with unicorns and rainbows
[812]
you probably have it as good as it gets
[815]
no life always sucks like let's just be
[817]
clear about that no matter what no last
[819]
turn i didn't expect but like
[822]
your life is probably not going to get
[823]
any better than it is now
[825]
no
[826]
no hold on but think about it okay
[829]
because again what really does make you
[831]
happy in life it's the people around us
[834]
the people closest to us and as we get
[836]
older those people slowly pass
[839]
and i know that's like a morbid thing to
[841]
say but it really helps me personally
[843]
enjoy the present because i have the
[846]
people that i love the most still with
[848]
me and so when i'm going through
[849]
something tough i'm like hey at least i
[851]
get to go visit my parents over the
[852]
weekend or i get to spend time with
[854]
these loved ones and so try to try to
[856]
put all of that in context whatever
[859]
you're going through right now it'll
[860]
eventually pass but don't forget to
[863]
enjoy the good parts of your life right
[864]
now yeah so to summarize
[868]
rich people
[869]
go do something good in the world you'll
[871]
be shocked at how good you feel that's
[872]
the the cure to the therapy that you
[875]
need okay that's just
[877]
if you're miserable go spend that money
[879]
on yourself and on others and you'll
[881]
feel amazing and if you're not obscenely
[884]
wealthy like these folks
[886]
don't sweat it man it's that kind of
[888]
wealth you don't need it and oftentimes
[890]
it makes you or certainly your kids way
[893]
more miserable and i'll end on this
[894]
russell brandon was once on the show and
[896]
i asked him
[897]
uh because he said he had he was really
[899]
miserable growing up and and then he
[900]
became famous and he always wanted to be
[902]
famous and wealthy and i asked russell
[904]
did did it work
[906]
once you got fame
[908]
did you feel better and he said
[910]
not at all it didn't fill the hole in my
[913]
heart at all
[914]
and so
[915]
it's an illusion it's an illusion that
[917]
the media gives you oh if you're just
[919]
rich or if you're just famous you'll be
[921]
fine no you can be fine now of course
[924]
you need some money there's no question
[926]
about that but there's so many wonderful
[928]
things around you and in a sense
[930]
the good news is we all don't know how
[932]
good we have it it doesn't get that much
[934]
better up there thanks for watching the
