Jury Delivers Harsh Message To Alex Jones; Focus Turns To Sorting Out Finances - YouTube

[0]
all right what i'm about to show you was
[1]
the response from the far-right
[3]
conspiracy theory pushing media
[5]
personality alex jones last night when
[8]
he found out that he and his company
[9]
owed 4.1 million dollars in damages for
[12]
the impact of the conspiracy theory that
[14]
he pushed that sandy hook was somehow
[17]
faked
[20]
we are
[21]
so
[23]
broke
[24]
that i'm not even worried about that 4.2
[26]
million dollars
[27]
i'm worried about our bankruptcy to
[30]
emergency stabilized infowars and we
[33]
have a plan but to do that we need
[35]
support so get a t-shirt get a book get
[37]
a film get my new book the great reset
[39]
and the war for the world get alex's war
[42]
get bodies ultimate turmeric formula get
[44]
vital mineral fusion get them all at
[46]
infowarsstore.com and keep us on the air
[52]
that was last night alex jones
[54]
effectively fundraising off the 4.1
[56]
million dollar ruling against him and
[58]
his company claiming he's broke that the
[60]
company's bankrupt saying he needs you
[62]
to buy his diet pills and his t-shirts
[64]
or he's going to go under
[66]
for nearly a decade alex jones pushed a
[69]
conspiracy theory that the 2012 sandy
[71]
hook massacre was fake
[74]
26 people died 20 of them first graders
[76]
i was there hours after the massacre i
[79]
can tell you personally it was
[80]
incredibly real i saw parents before
[84]
and after they learned of the murder of
[86]
their children
[87]
that 4.1 million dollars last night was
[89]
part of the damages jones is now facing
[92]
for pushing such a disgusting lie and
[94]
tonight alex jones tab
[96]
got even higher
[98]
that same jury in texas handed jones
[100]
another 45.2
[104]
million dollar penalty
[106]
yesterday's ruling was on compensatory
[108]
damages how much cash jones owes to the
[110]
parents of a sandy hook victim for the
[113]
psychological torment and harassment
[115]
that the conspiracy theory he pushed
[117]
caused them
[118]
today's ruling was punitive
[121]
so how much money jones owes those same
[123]
parents as punishment for spreading that
[126]
conspiracy and jones tab here is
[129]
cumulative so all in all that means
[131]
about 49 million dollars total
[134]
now as much as it would be nice to
[136]
bookend this to say the ruling is going
[138]
to definitely teach mr jones his lesson
[140]
and there's no way jones and his
[142]
companies could pay the 49 million bucks
[145]
it's more complicated than that
[147]
first of all if there's one thing we've
[148]
learned watching this trial it is that
[150]
alex jones lies a lot
[154]
so while his tv network infowars has
[156]
become essentially a fundraising
[157]
marathon asking viewers to send them
[160]
cryptocurrency or sign up for monthly
[162]
payments or buy their fluoride free
[165]
toothpaste
[166]
we actually don't have a transparent
[167]
picture of jones or his business
[169]
finances other than taking their word
[171]
for it we've got no way of knowing if
[173]
that company is actually broke
[175]
the other complicating factor is that
[177]
there is a texas law that caps punitive
[180]
judgments so it isn't exactly clear if
[182]
that big 49 million dollar judgment will
[185]
actually be the amount taken out of
[187]
jones's bank account
[189]
but that big dollar amount still does
[191]
send a message it sends a message to
[192]
alex jones and do people like alex jones
[195]
across the country who push dangerous
[197]
conspiracy theories for profit
[200]
that they can and will be held
[202]
accountable
[204]
and this is just the first of three
[206]
damages cases about sandy hook that alex
[208]
jones is facing so whether or not he's
[210]
actually broke now he might be soon
[214]
joining us now is anna merlin senior
[215]
staff writer advice who's been following
[217]
this trial incredibly closely anna thank
[220]
you so much for joining us tonight let's
[222]
first talk about this this cap the 44.2
[225]
million dollars in punitive damages is
[228]
eye-popping especially on top of
[230]
yesterday's 4.1 million dollars in
[232]
compensatory damages but there's a texas
[235]
state law that caps punitive damages at
[237]
twice what the compensatory damages were
[240]
plus seven hundred and fifty thousand
[242]
dollars so is alex jones gonna owe 48
[245]
million dollars or nine million dollars
[247]
after that cap is taken into account how
[250]
do they figure that out
[252]
right this is the big topic of
[253]
discussion today uh it's very likely
[256]
that this case is going to go to the
[257]
texas supreme court uh this is what the
[259]
plaintiff's attorneys said this
[261]
afternoon when the ruling was completed
[263]
and it's certainly i think also what
[265]
alex jones and his lawyers are expecting
[267]
they have already objected to the filing
[269]
of the judgment um so at this point it
[271]
is anybody's guess how much alex jones
[273]
and infowars and infowars parent company
[275]
free speech systems actually end up
[277]
owing there's another complicating
[279]
factor here too which is that in the
[281]
middle of this trial free speech systems
[283]
also filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy
[285]
protection so there is a real financial
[288]
mess going on right now as far as what
[290]
will actually end up being owed
[293]
and there are two financial messes right
[295]
there's the what is the o as a result of
[297]
these these judgments and the other one
[300]
is as you said his personal wealth and
[302]
his companies and the bankruptcy and the
[304]
judge admonished him uh for talking
[306]
about that because uh filing for
[308]
bankruptcy is not the same as actually
[310]
having banks
[311]
bankruptcy protection do you have some
[314]
sense of of the picture of alex jones's
[317]
wealth in his companies and what it
[318]
looks like
[320]
well we got a very good picture today in
[323]
testimony from a forensic economist who
[326]
testified before the jury went to
[327]
deliberations um so this was all made
[330]
very complicated by the fact that um
[332]
jones and infowars did not provide basic
[334]
financial information
[336]
in these lawsuits that he's facing in
[338]
texas and connecticut which is
[340]
part of what caused him and the company
[342]
to lose those cases by default this is
[344]
why these were damages trials and not
[347]
actual trials to determine culpability
[349]
um so you know that was part of the
[351]
issue but um this forensic economist
[353]
testifying today said that
[356]
what we think is that the company
[357]
probably has a net worth of about 130
[360]
million dollars on the low end and 270
[362]
million dollars in the high end there
[364]
have been points in the company's
[365]
history where alex jones is paying
[367]
himself a salary of about six million
[369]
dollars a year
[371]
uh and this is without taking into
[373]
account all of his income streams so we
[376]
know that infowars makes a lot of money
[378]
from a store that sells supplements
[380]
movies books other products
[383]
but we also know that jones is making
[385]
money off of sites like amazon
[387]
and so it is really difficult to get a
[390]
full
[391]
financial picture of exactly what he has
[393]
and exactly where it is especially with
[395]
uh
[396]
a pretty
[398]
concerted lack of cooperation from the
[399]
company
[402]
does this get better by virtue of the
[404]
fact that this is just the first of
[405]
three damages cases against alex jones
[408]
by family members of sandy hook victims
[410]
what are the other uh what do the other
[412]
two cases look like and can they
[414]
do more or go further than than this one
[417]
has in trying to get to the bottom of of
[419]
alex jones's money and and where it is
[422]
yeah that's a great question and
[424]
unfortunately it's another sort of murky
[425]
question right now so there is another
[427]
case set
[428]
to begin in texas in september that is
[431]
laini posner and veronique de la rosa
[434]
and then um eight other plaintiffs are
[436]
supposed to
[437]
uh be
[438]
you know beginning their trial in
[440]
connecticut also in september but with
[442]
the bankruptcy filing by free speech
[444]
system it's systems it's very unclear
[446]
what's going to happen in those cases
[449]
when they might happen you know jury
[450]
selection was supposed to begin in the
[452]
connecticut case uh recently and it
[454]
obviously did not so i would think that
[457]
if these cases do actually end up in a
[459]
courtroom that will be
[461]
a big focus on the part of these
[463]
attorneys is trying to create some
[465]
transparency about where alex jones's
[467]
money is and to you know really um
[472]
examine these claims that he's made
[473]
repeatedly during the trial in the
[475]
courtroom and on air on info wars that
[478]
he's broke that he's personally
[479]
insolvent that the company is gonna have
[481]
to start laying people off and canceling
[484]
shows you know he's made very specific
[486]
claims that i think will be subject to
[490]
examination anna thanks for your
[492]
explanations we appreciate it anna
[494]
merlin is a senior staff writer at vice
[496]
we appreciate your time tonight
[498]
thank you
