Why You Need Umbrella Insurance - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
You may have heard
[1]
the term umbrella insurance
[3]
and like many people,
[4]
you may be confused about just
what it is and how it works.
[8]
That's precisely why
we've created this video.
[11]
We want to make it easy
for you to understand
[13]
your insurance options.
[15]
This way you can make informed decisions
[18]
when deciding on the coverages
for you and your family.
[21]
Let's face it, lawsuits
are quite common today.
[24]
If you accidentally injure
someone or damage their property,
[27]
you could be sued and find
yourself in litigation.
[30]
More commonly juries are
awarding large verdicts.
[34]
So while your homeowners,
property and auto policies
[37]
may provide substantial liability limits,
[39]
juries can award sums
that exceed those limits.
[42]
You would be personally
responsible for the amounts
[45]
that exceed your policy limits.
[47]
That's where umbrella insurance comes in.
[49]
The following is one of the many examples
[52]
where having high limits
of liability coverage
[54]
might not be enough.
[56]
Imagine you were involved
in a four car accident,
[58]
which is considered to be your fault.
[61]
You are uninjured,
[62]
but all three of the other cars
are considered total losses
[66]
and each car had one person
that sustained injuries.
[69]
Now let's take a look at how
your coverage would apply.
[72]
Let's assume your current auto insurance
[74]
provides bodily injury coverage
of $250,000 per person,
[79]
$500,000 per accident.
[82]
And the property damage limits
are $100,000 per accident.
[86]
On the surface,
[86]
that sounds like it should be
enough coverage and it may be.
[90]
But until you look at the
details of your coverage
[92]
and the potential cost of damages
[94]
associated in an accident like this,
[96]
you cannot be so sure.
[98]
For this example,
[100]
let's further assume car
one had an injured driver.
[103]
That requires $200,000 for bodily injury
[106]
and $40,000 of property
damage to replace the car.
[110]
Car two requires $200,000
for bodily injury
[114]
and another $40,000 for
replacing that vehicle.
[117]
And the third car requires
$300,000 for bodily injury
[121]
and $50,000 to replace the luxury vehicle.
[125]
Add it all up and you are
looking at a total settlement
[128]
of $700,000 for the bodily injury
[131]
and $130,000 for the damage
to the cars involved.
[135]
After reviewing your
current liability limits,
[138]
you will see that your insurance coverage
[139]
would pay up to $500,000
[142]
towards the bodily injury claims
[144]
as well as the $100,000
towards the property damages.
[148]
You on the other hand
[149]
may be responsible for
the additional $200,000
[152]
for bodily injury,
[154]
as well as the $30,000
for property damage,
[157]
which means your current assets
[159]
and even your future
earnings could be in jeopardy
[162]
as you may be forced to make
up the difference of $230,000.
[166]
This is why we recommend
considering an umbrella policy.
[170]
Now let's consider the same situation,
[172]
but now you have
[173]
a $1 million umbrella
liability policy in place.
[177]
From our example,
[178]
you'll recall that the total
settlement costs were $700,000
[182]
for bodily injury and
$130,000 for property damage.
[186]
And that your insurance
coverage paid for the $500,000
[189]
towards bodily injury and
$100,000 towards property damage.
[194]
The remaining $200,000
[196]
that would have been your responsibility
[198]
would now be covered by your
$1 million umbrella policy.
[202]
This is exactly what an
umbrella policy is meant to do.
[205]
It helps to protect current income,
[207]
future income and assets against lawsuits
[210]
by providing additional liability coverage
[212]
in excess of your existing policies.
[215]
One of the best features
of an umbrella policy
[217]
is that it provides coverage
[219]
on top of your existing policies.
[221]
So for example,
[222]
if someone slipped and
fell on your driveway
[224]
and wanted to sue you,
[226]
the umbrella policy would
kick in after your underlining
[228]
homeowners policy limit was exhausted.
[231]
If you are responsible for
damages caused by an accident
[234]
while on your boat or while
operating your RV again,
[237]
your umbrella policy would
provide the excess coverage.
[240]
You may be surprised just how inexpensive
[243]
this type of policy is.
[245]
In most cases,
[246]
you would pay less than a dollar a day.
[248]
For these reasons, personal
umbrella liability insurance
[251]
is widely considered one of
the best values for the money
[254]
when you compare the cost of
the protection it provides.
[257]
