Yo what's going on everybody? My name is Ryan. I'm聽 a CPA and today I'm going to be telling you what's聽聽
[6]
the deal with your refunds for the year 2021.聽 Many of you probably have filed your taxes earlier聽聽
[11]
in the year and have not received your refund聽 yet. You've probably used the check my refund聽聽
[16]
tool on the IRS's website and nothing shows up.聽 So in this video I'm going to explain maybe what's聽聽
[22]
going on. Maybe what you can do and hopefully聽 it's helpful to you okay. So when I say the check聽聽
[29]
my refund tool I'll put a link in the description聽 below on what I'm talking about. It's basically a聽聽
[34]
tool that the IRS has for you to check the status聽 of where your refund is. Basically what you need聽聽
[40]
is your social security number, your filing聽 status, and your refund amount, your expected聽聽
[47]
refund amount. Now if you're filing jointly聽 you want to use the primary taxpayers social聽聽
[52]
security number okay, if you're filing married聽 jointly. Now what this tool does it tells you,聽聽
[58]
you know, whether your return has been processed.聽 You know how far along the refund process is聽聽
[64]
and when you should be expecting your refund.聽 If you use this tool correctly, and you don't,聽聽
[68]
and you get a page that says you that the IRS has聽 no status on your refund or they can't find it聽聽
[73]
then a couple things could be happening here. Make聽 sure that your your tax return was actually filed聽聽
[79]
and accepted okay. The next thing, another thing聽 that could be happening is your refund amount聽聽
[85]
could have changed and that's uh I'll go, I'll聽 go through that a little later in this video聽聽
[91]
why that would happen. And then third the IRS聽 might simply just have not processed your tax聽聽
[97]
return yet because they are pretty behind. Now聽 I'm going to talk a little bit more about that,聽聽
[101]
the not processed part. The IRS has been backed聽 up or delayed since 2020 due to the pandemic.聽聽
[109]
You know the offices had to shut down for it聽 seemed like a month and a half maybe two months聽聽
[115]
and then slowly start working back in their聽 operations from remote operations. And remote聽聽
[121]
operations are sometimes not as efficient as being聽 in the office and other times they are but that's聽聽
[125]
that's another subject for another day. But either聽 way the IRS was behind and they still are. I聽聽
[132]
believe they are still actually processing refunds聽 from the 2020 tax year which is really unfortunate聽聽
[139]
but due to covid that's, that has set the IRS back聽 quite a bit. And so they are still working on that聽聽
[146]
as well as trying to process the 20, the 2021聽 tax refunds. And by 2021 I just mean you know聽聽
[154]
the refunds that you filed this year in 2021. Yeah聽 we're given that there's the, the delays from last聽聽
[160]
year going through and carrying on to this year聽 and that has been leading to many more delays聽聽
[168]
for this year, for the 2020 tax year and that聽 could be one reason why your return is not聽聽
[174]
processed yet. Other reasons could be like, you聽 know, some tax returns are just easier to process.聽聽
[179]
Some of them can be processed by computers,聽 machines, and whatnot. And there are some聽聽
[183]
returns that might need some human processing聽 and human calculations just to verify.聽聽
[188]
And in some returns they might just choose humans聽 to process, just spot check, and spot choosing聽聽
[195]
them to make sure that they're accurate okay. So聽 those are some reasons why they're delayed. Now聽聽
[199]
what are some reasons that your tax return or your聽 tax refund amounts could have changed? Well to get聽聽
[206]
into that let's talk about the new tax law changes聽 that happened in 2021 for the 2020 tax year.聽聽
[213]
So first you have the unemployment insurance聽 being non-taxable, part of it being non-taxable.聽聽
[220]
And then you have the stimulus payments聽 that you received last year and this year聽聽
[224]
that are affecting your refund amount and聽 the the tax return process okay. So if you聽聽
[231]
did not receive a stimulus payment last year聽 or the second stimulus payment early this year聽聽
[237]
then you should be claiming that on your聽 tax return because they are advanced tax聽聽
[242]
credits. You know they were advanced to you and聽 if you didn't receive them in advance, then you聽聽
[246]
should be able to get them on this tax return. So聽 that's one thing that's causing some delays here聽聽
[251]
is because the IRS has to reconcile what was sent聽 out versus what was reported on the tax return.聽聽
[259]
And there's little nuances like what if the, what聽 if the stimulus payments were sent out to you聽聽
[263]
but you never cashed the check. Or what聽 if the debit card was sent out to you聽聽
[268]
but you never received it. So in their聽 system they see that they sent it out to you聽聽
[272]
but maybe you claimed it on your tax聽 return as if you did not receive it.聽聽
[276]
So now they have to figure out what's going on聽 there. So those, that kind of thing is causing聽聽
[279]
delays in that sense. And now the unemployment聽 insurance change that changed in the middle of聽聽
[285]
tax season. That means some people already filed聽 their tax returns before the change happened so聽聽
[291]
the IRS said that they're going to take care聽 of those people on their own. They, you don't聽聽
[294]
have to file an amended return okay. But these,聽 this also causes the IRS to have to reconcile,聽聽
[302]
you know, what was reported in unemployment聽 versus what's not taxable. There's also income聽聽
[308]
limitations there so if you made over $150,000聽 as a married couple you don't qualify for the聽聽
[315]
unemployment income exclusion. So the, these are聽 like middle of tax season changes that happened聽聽
[322]
that could cause further delays聽 in processing in your tax return.聽聽
[327]
So yeah to me, that makes sense why for some聽 people it's taking much longer for the tax returns聽聽
[333]
to be processed all right. So now that leads me聽 to why your refund amount could have changed. So聽聽
[339]
let's say you, you didn't receive a stimulus聽 payments in 2020 or early 2021. And let's say you聽聽
[347]
didn't report it on your tax return. So maybe you聽 are due a bigger refund than you were expecting.聽聽
[353]
That's when your refund amount could have聽 changed. Or if you received a partial stimulus聽聽
[359]
payment in 2020 but then when you file your聽 2020 tax return, you are due a greater refund,聽聽
[367]
or whatnot, then that would cause聽 your refund amount to change as well.聽聽
[371]
If you owed taxes in prior years, that would聽 cause a refund amount to change because聽聽
[378]
those taxes are still due. So if you receive a聽 tax refund in the 2020 year then they're going聽聽
[386]
to apply that to your prior year's tax liability聽 to satisfy that okay. Now another layer on top聽聽
[395]
of that is that the IRS said they don't want to聽 apply your stimulus payments to prior year taxes.聽聽
[401]
So that means they have to break out your stimulus聽 payment amounts versus your tax refund amounts.聽聽
[406]
And if you owe taxes in prior years they're just聽 going to apply your tax refund amount to those聽聽
[411]
prior years and then they're going to send your聽 stimulus payment to you as a tax credit. So that's聽聽
[417]
how the IRS is splitting that up as well. Which聽 you know, all these moving parts put together,聽聽
[423]
you can really see why it might be taking longer聽 for the IRS to get you your refund or to process聽聽
[431]
your tax return fully. Now if your tax refund聽 amount has changed, that would cause the IRS聽聽
[439]
check your refund status tool to actually not pull聽 up your refund because let's say you're expecting聽聽
[444]
a $3,000 refund so you put that into the tool聽 it shows up as "status not found". Well if your聽聽
[451]
refund actually changed to $2,000 then using聽 $3,000 as the amount for the check the status聽聽
[458]
is actually incorrect now. So you know, if your聽 refund amount changed you won't really know that.聽聽
[465]
The IRS might send you a letter or notice to聽 tell you that but in, in this day and age,聽聽
[472]
you know with the pandemic, it seems like actions聽 are taking place much quicker than notices聽聽
[478]
are going out of the IRS system. So basically聽 yeah, if your, if your refund amount changed聽聽
[483]
that would that would throw off your check my聽 status, check my refund status tool and you won't聽聽
[489]
be able to see your actual refund status unless聽 somehow you knew your exact refund amount. So聽聽
[496]
with the pandemic delays in the 2020 year, plus聽 the stimulus payments that have to be reconciled,聽聽
[504]
plus the changes mid tax season in 2021聽 - the unemployment insurance mainly,聽聽
[512]
plus you know, if you owed prior year taxes聽 that the IRS has to apply some of your refund to聽聽
[519]
but not all of it, it's it's really easy to see聽 why your tax refund and your tax return could be聽聽
[526]
delayed in processing. Now what can you do about聽 this? Obviously the first thing you can do is try聽聽
[532]
calling the IRS. I'll leave their phone number聽 for individual taxpayers in the description.聽聽
[537]
I would definitely hold off until after June聽 15th to call them because you know although聽聽
[542]
tax season is over, there are still actually some聽 states that have, that are still in tax season.聽聽
[549]
States that have gone through like winter storm聽 delays you know, Texas uh a bunch of other states聽聽
[555]
their deadline, their IRS deadline is now June聽 14th. So hold off on calling the IRS until after聽聽
[561]
June 14th because you know they're still I bet聽 their phone lines are still very busy. You might聽聽
[567]
have to wait several hours at this point. I mean聽 even if even, if you call after the 15th you might聽聽
[574]
still have to wait several hours but you'll have聽 a better chance of getting through. The best thing聽聽
[578]
you can do is call them to find out what's going聽 on. If you checked your where's my refund tool聽聽
[584]
and nothing comes up, then give them a call okay.聽 The other thing you can do is hire a professional聽聽
[590]
like us or like your local CPA firm, whoever you聽 are using with, to help you with your taxes, give聽聽
[595]
them a call to call the IRS for you because they聽 can usually get through much quicker than you can聽聽
[600]
through their special practitioner line. So in聽 order to do that um you know, it might not be聽聽
[607]
worth your money, and if your refund is only a few聽 hundred bucks but if you're expecting like several聽聽
[613]
thousands of dollars, maybe tens of thousands聽 of dollars of a refund, then definitely call.聽聽
[619]
You know hire a professional to help you figure聽 that out at least get a game plan on what's going聽聽
[624]
on all right. So that's all I've got for today.聽 Thanks for joining me and uh if you found this聽聽
