wanted to talk to y'all about being a

local travel nurse because this is

something that i can't fit into 15

seconds and this is something that can

help out a lot of people my background

is that i went to los angeles for five
[19]
months for my first travel assignment
[21]
this time last year
[23]
and then i was a local travel nurse for
[25]
eight months in the dmv area for those
[28]
of you not on the east coast that means
[29]
i was on the dc maryland virginia area
[33]
travel nursing is a great option for
[34]
people who live in large metro areas
[36]
because there are a ton of hospitals and
[38]
it basically just means that you get
[40]
paid triple to do the same job
[42]
what they don't want you to know or what
[44]
a lot of people don't know about local
[46]
travel nursing is that it isn't listed
[48]
as a local travel job it's just listed
[50]
as a regular travel job so you have to
[52]
ask and be a little bit
[54]
resourceful trying to find those local
[56]
travel opportunities so there's a couple
[58]
things to be aware of as you're looking
[60]
for a travel contract and one the
[64]
biggest things are staying on the right
[65]
side
[66]
of the irs you want to make sure that
[68]
you're paying your taxes correctly you
[70]
definitely need to be paying a cpa if
[72]
you are a travel nurse you can afford
[73]
that 300 500 a year whatever it is it's
[76]
worth it to stay on the right side of
[77]
the irs

there are a couple of things about
[80]
travel nursing and one of them is that
[82]
you've got a lot of paperwork so

tac the way that a typical travel nurse

job works

is that let's say that you live in
[89]
maryland and you want to work in
[91]
california great you have an apartment
[94]
in maryland your mom is in maryland your
[96]
dog your cat your renters insurance your
[99]
taxes and you're registered to vote all

that is in maryland that qualifies as

your tax home meaning that you are a
[106]
permanent resident of maryland

and then you can go take a travel nurse
[110]
contract in california for 13 weeks at a
[112]
time

and then you are going to be getting
[115]
paid your hourly wages as a travel nurse

but then you're also getting a tax-free
[119]
stipend the reason you're getting that
[121]
tax-free stipend is because you are
[123]
duplicating expenses

that means that you are paying for your
[126]
rent your utilities your water

all back in maryland you have a tax home

in maryland

and the tax free stipends are ruled by

the government and you can look at the
[138]
its gsa.com meals and incidentals and
[141]
then you can see what the limits are for
[144]
your tax-free stipend in each state

county and city

and it's different in every part of the

country so your tax-free stipends in
[152]
oklahoma are going to be less than in
[154]
san francisco because the cost of living
[156]
is different in both of those two places

so if you're a regular travel nurse it's

really helpful for you to know that

website as a form of reference so that

you can make sure that you're getting
[166]
the maximum tax free stipend

from your travel agency and always just
[170]
be aware of what the maximum stipend is

in the area that you are working

but

as a local travel nurse

you don't qualify for the tax free

stipend

this is where it's important to work

with a cpa it's important to make sure

that you're staying legal a bunch of

nurse blogs on the internet will say oh

well as long as you
[192]
are 50 miles from your tax home you can
[195]
still collect that tax free stipend

that's not really true unless you're
[199]
truly duplicating expenses so if you're

paying for a hotel
[203]
or if you are paying for an airbnb
[206]
and you're paying for your rent back
[207]
home and you work those 50 miles away

yes you can take the tax free stipend if
[213]
you're not
[214]
if you're just driving two hours to work
[216]
and then driving back
[218]
that's where you're gonna get in trouble
[220]
with the irs because you're not
[221]
duplicating expenses you just have a

long commute so i really recommend

working with a cpa and making sure that
[227]
you guys are doing everything legally
[228]
because a lot of travel nurses take
[231]
risks that i do not think are safe

and they won't pay any taxes so

don't do that

work with a cpa pay like your taxes so

we talked about the difference between

local travel and regular travel a
[244]
regular travel nurse contract you get
[245]
paid your hourly and you get paid your
[247]
tax free stipend every single week and
[250]
those when you open up any of the travel
[251]
nurse websites those are the jobs that
[253]
are listed so it it'll be a blended pay
[256]
package of including your stipend and
[258]
your hourly wages

and then what you need to do looking for
[263]
local travel jobs is ask your recruiter

if that facility will accept local
[268]
travelers not every facility will take
[271]
local travelers
[273]
some hospitals are incentivized to keep
[276]
their employees as staff nurses so that
[278]
they can pay them less and they don't
[280]
want their staff leaving to go across
[282]
the street and make triple they want to
[283]
pay their staff nurses as little as
[285]
possible because capitalist medicine is
[287]
very dirty which is a whole situation

i have many thoughts about that

but you need to ask your recruiter if
[295]
the facility will accept local travelers
[297]
and then he
[298]
or she
[299]
will ask the account manager and then
[301]
they will circle back to you with a yes
[303]
or no so once you have whether a travel
[306]
job will accept local travelers as a yes
[308]
or no ask your recruiter to send you the
[311]
side-by-side pay packages of both the
[313]
regular and then as the um local
[316]
traveler you're going to see that the
[318]
local travel
[319]
pay contract is a little bit less like a
[322]
couple hundred dollars less a week and
[324]
that is because your travel agency has
[326]
to pay payroll taxes on all of your
[330]
money now because you're a local
[332]
traveler versus if you were collecting
[335]
the tax free stipend it's a cost saving
[337]
measure for the travel agency as well so
[340]
every agency you work with you will see
[342]
that if you're a local traveler the paid
[344]
package is a little bit less at baseline
[346]
if you are a local traveler versus a
[349]
regular traveler because the agency has
[352]
to pay more taxes on the tax-free
[354]
stipend meaning you get a little bit
[355]
less money as well
[357]
and then um the way that it works from
[359]
there is super simple you get your pay
[362]
rate and then you get your overtime rate
[364]
and then you work as much as you want
[365]
and you pay taxes on all of it so

i had a contract
[370]
a pulling up that was a comparison
[374]
of

a couple of different pay packages and i
[378]
think my pay was like 90 something
[379]
dollars an hour base
[381]
and then like a hundred and thirty
[382]
dollars
[384]
overtime

okay let's see

uh here's a paid package from that i did
[391]
in like september this is not my current
[393]
contract it was before
[395]
um so in california you get overtime
[398]
after eight hours worked per the
[400]
california labor laws
[402]
so for a 48-hour contract i got eight
[405]
hours paid out at ninety-eight dollars
[407]
an hour
[408]
in four hours at 147 dollars an hour
[413]
um
[414]
which then for 48 hours in a week came
[416]
out to 5488.

and that was for one week of work in
[422]
california five thousand four hundred
[424]
and eighty eight dollars and then i paid
[426]
taxes on all of that
[428]
so then you pay you're like nine percent
[430]
california you're 24 federal um i have a
[434]
401k and then at the end of the year i
[437]
do get taxes back but again it's just
[439]
very important to work with
[441]
a cpa and i can't give tax advice
[443]
because everybody's tax situation is
[445]
different like i'm married i don't have
[447]
any kids what are my withholdings
[449]
that'll be my withholdings will be
[450]
different from yours so you just need to
[452]
work with a cpa to get all of that
[453]
ironed out

but let me pull it up as a

travel nurse

working
[460]
eight months out of this past year i was
[462]
a local traveler and then i did four
[464]
months of regular traveling
[466]
i'll clear 200 000 this year
[469]
and i will have only worked 10 months
[472]
this year let me see if i can pull that

out

yeah i will make 200 000 as a travel

nurse working local travel contracts and

i think that local traveling is a really
[481]
great option especially if you live in a
[483]
large metropolitan area

like you know your dallas your new york
[488]
your dc your san francisco your la you
[491]
there's you know probably 30 different
[493]
hospitals that you could work at where
[495]
you're going to make about triple what
[496]
you're making as a staff nurse so why
[498]
not hop across the street and make three
[500]
times as much
[501]
the rules to guide you are just to make
[503]
sure that you ask your recruiter if they
[505]
will take you as a local traveler so any
[508]
job that you see listed as a regular
[511]
travel ask if they'll take a local
[512]
traveler
[514]
submit to the job
[516]
look at the pay packages
[518]
do the interview accept the job work
[520]
with a cpa pay all of your taxes but
[523]
then make triple what you are making as
[524]
a staff nurse for doing the same job

i literally was right across the street
[529]
from where i was working as a staff
[531]
nurse for eight months
[533]
and my base pay was more than triple
[535]
what i had been making as a staff nurse
[536]
i was like why not get paid more to do

the same job
[539]
and that's why i wanted to kind of go
