Freezing Bank Accounts Violates Freedom - YouTube

The invasion is underway.
[1]
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
[3]
revealed differences in how
[5]
political leaders deal with threats.
[7]
Ukraine’s president
[9]
rejected evacuation, saying,
[11]
“I need ammunition,
[12]
not a ride.”
[13]
Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!
[16]
In Canada, by contrast...
[18]
When truckers protested
[20]
vaccination rules
[21]
[Honking]
[23]
Canada’s delicate prime minister
[25]
felt so threatened by
[27]
peaceful protesters
[29]
that he called this protest an
[30]
“occupation” and declared:
[33]
The federal government
[35]
has invoked the Emergencies Act.
[37]
[Yelling]
[39]
That authorized his government
[40]
to take extraordinary measures.
[42]
Mounted police
[44]
rode right into crowds.
[45]
This is about keeping
[47]
Canadians safe.
[48]
Stop it. Whoa. Oh my god!
[52]
The police horses trampled people.
[55]
The Emergencies Act also included
[57]
a newer way to suppress protest.
[60]
If your truck
[61]
is being used in these protests
[64]
your corporate accounts will be frozen.
[68]
Banks have already started to freeze
[69]
the accounts of people involved.
[71]
Kind of like what we're doing now
[73]
to Putin.
[74]
But Trudeau did that
[75]
to his own people!
[77]
[Yelling]
[78]
And it worked.
[79]
The protest ended soon after.
[81]
You do have to have a bank account,
[83]
really, to be able to live.
[84]
Law professor Todd Zywicki.
[86]
Look, they're blocking a bridge.
[88]
They might be threatening someone's life.
[91]
But imagine John,
[92]
if during the Civil Rights era,
[94]
Martin Luther King could have lost
[96]
his bank account
[97]
because he trespassed
[99]
at a Woolworth's counter.
[101]
Canada even froze accounts
[103]
of people who donated to the truckers.
[105]
Imagine if people who may have donated
[107]
as little as 20 dollars
[109]
might not be able to access
[110]
their bank accounts.
[111]
It was justified, said Trudeau.
[113]
These illegal blockades
[115]
and occupations received
[116]
disturbing amounts of foreign funding
[120]
to destabilize Canada's democracy.
[122]
I don't know why you would say
[123]
it's destabilizing democracy.
[126]
It seems to me this is democracy,
[128]
Canadians trying to
[129]
stand up for their rights.
[131]
Good thing that sort of repression
[132]
doesn’t happen here in America.
[134]
Except, it has!
[136]
The government is cutting off funds
[137]
to businesses it simply doesn’t like.
[140]
It did that through something
[141]
President Obama called
[143]
Operation Choke Point.
[145]
Companies engaged in
[146]
completely legal services
[149]
that found themselves losing access
[151]
to bank accounts
[152]
and essentially being forced to shut down.
[154]
It happened to fireworks dealers,
[156]
gambling sites,
[157]
pornography,
[158]
payday loans,
[159]
and gun dealers, like Kat O’Connor.
[161]
Kat O’Connor says
[163]
she did everything right.
[165]
Federal licenses, state licenses, fees.
[167]
But then suddenly,
[169]
banks wouldn’t deal with her.
[171]
Now what do I do?
[172]
So you try Stripe and you try PayPal
[174]
and you try Square.
[176]
It always ended up with an email
[178]
saying they were closing my accounts.
[180]
I really think it was just a
[182]
backdoor attempt at gun control.
[184]
Operation Choke Point is officially gone,
[188]
but you're still being blacklisted?
[190]
Yes. The policies were not changed.
[192]
Of course, banks are not
[194]
official agents of the government.
[197]
You might say, well, they're just
[198]
private businesses.
[199]
Let them do what they want.
[200]
Yeah. It's their money.
[201]
Problem here is
[202]
can we really think about the banking system
[204]
as a purely private industry?
[206]
There are barriers to entry.
[207]
You have to get permission to start a new bank.
[209]
What's your solution?
[211]
Prohibit financial institutions
[213]
from deciding on whether to give people
[215]
financial services based on anything
[217]
except for basically their financial risk.
[220]
Then, when politicians don’t like what you say,
[223]
they wouldn’t be able to
[225]
pressure banks to cut you off.
[227]
Hey! Hey!
[228]
Some at this protest
[230]
thought using cryptocurrency would
[232]
prevent the government from
[233]
grabbing their money.
[235]
After all…
[236]
No one user, government,
[238]
or bank, can force
[239]
a fee on a payment,
[241]
or control its flow.
[242]
I always assumed that if you
[244]
had your money and some
[246]
form of crypto,
[248]
you were protected
[249]
against this kind of government action.
[251]
The catch is crypto has to be
[252]
converted back into regular money.
[254]
And the exchanges most crypto holders
[256]
use cooperate with governments.
[259]
That let Canada freeze
[260]
$20 million in Bitcoin
[262]
that people had donated to the truckers.
[265]
What happens if you can't
[266]
access your bank accounts
[267]
to actually get money
[269]
to pay your bail?
[270]
Freezing bank accounts gives
[271]
governments enormous power
[273]
over anyone doing
[275]
anything politicians don’t like.
[277]
[Honking]
[279]
You might not like what they're doing,
[282]
but we need to tolerate people
[284]
saying things we don't like,
[286]
and separate that from their ability
[288]
to make a living.
[289]
When politicians are frightened,
[291]
some will now take your money,
[293]
and your rights.
