Amazon Mega Backdoor Roth 2020 - YouTube

[0]
- Okay, Amazon employees,
[1]
this is a video that I've been hoping to make for you guys
[4]
for a number of years.
[6]
You guys finally, as of early 2020, have access
[9]
to the Mega Backdoor Roth Conversion, AKA the
[13]
after-tax contribution to your 401k plan.
[15]
This was not eligible for Amazon employees
[18]
until you guys switch from Vanguard to Fidelity
[20]
at the very start of 2020.
[21]
And now you guys are eligible to take advantage
[24]
of the Mega Backdoor Roth Conversion.
[26]
So, let's jump into the numbers.
[28]
Let's talk a little bit about what this means
[29]
and why this might be important for you.
[32]
And why, in my opinion,
[33]
you should take full advantage of this if you can.
[37]
You probably know that within your 401k
[40]
you can contribute, if you're under 50,
[41]
$19,500 per year.
[44]
If you're over 50,
[45]
you can contribute an extra $6,500.
[48]
We're just gonna concentrate on folks
[49]
who are under 50 right now for this example.
[52]
So if you max out your 401k contribution, again
[55]
you can put in $19,500.
[57]
Now, we love Amazon, we think it's a great company,
[59]
we think you guys have some pretty good benefits.
[61]
The 401k match associated with Amazon
[63]
is not the best in the industry.
[67]
But if you contribute up to 4% of your salary,
[69]
they're gonna contribute 2%.
[71]
So they're gonna give you 50% of that match up to 4%.
[75]
In this sort of a scenario,
[76]
if you are contributing the maximum to your 401k,
[79]
they're gonna put in 2% of your salary.
[82]
So let's just say
[84]
that you're making the max Amazon base salary,
[86]
you're making $160,000 a year.
[88]
Essentially, you can put in $19,500,
[91]
Amazon is gonna to put in 2%.
[93]
So they're gonna give you $3,200 as a match within your 401k.
[97]
Now what you probably don't know though,
[100]
is that the federal limit for total dollars going
[103]
into a 401k in any given year is $57,000 as of 2020.
[110]
Where the Mega Backdoor Roth comes into play here,
[113]
is essentially Amazon is gonna allow you to contribute up
[117]
to 10% of your base salary to the after-tax portion
[122]
of your 401k.
[124]
And so again,
[124]
if you're making $160,000 base,
[128]
then that means Amazon is gonna let you put in essentially
[130]
$16,000 over the course of the year.
[134]
Now, that doesn't mean technically actually,
[136]
that you can put in $16,000 no matter when you start.
[140]
They're gonna let you put in up to 10%
[142]
of your salary each respective paycheck.
[145]
So, for those of you that wanna take advantage of this,
[147]
for those of you that think,
[148]
'boy, this is a benefit that is off the charts
[151]
that I really should be taken advantage of'
[153]
the sooner the year that you start taking advantage of this,
[156]
the sooner in the year that you do make
[157]
that election within Fidelity
[159]
to make a after-tax contribution to your 401k the better.
[163]
The reason that this is important is because
[165]
if you're gonna save money above and beyond your 401k,
[168]
you're probably gonna save money into a brokerage account.
[171]
So think like an individual account,
[173]
a joint with rights of survivorship account,
[174]
a trust, an account like that.
[176]
These types of accounts,
[178]
you get taxed each and every year.
[180]
So, when we think of dividends
[182]
when we think of interest income,
[183]
when we think of capital gains,
[184]
each and every one of these pieces
[186]
is gonna be taxable each and every year.
[188]
And when you think about that sort of tax drag,
[190]
particularly over a long time frame,
[192]
it tends to really, really add up.
[195]
If on the other hand,
[196]
you immediately convert these dollars to Roth,
[198]
now you've got these dollars sitting in a bucket
[201]
where any interest income, any dividends, any capital gains,
[204]
that's all tax free.
[206]
If you guys wanna talk,
