[9]
hello and welcome to the Morningstar
[11]
series ask the expert I'm Emma worden
[14]
joining me today is Morningstar fund
[15]
analyst Fatima Kazu to talk about
[17]
sustainable investing - hi Emma so
[20]
kicking us off today is the news that
[22]
fun Smith is launching a sustainable
[24]
equity fund which will embody ESG
[27]
considerations in its stock selection
[29]
but it also screen out a certain sectors
[32]
including casinos gas companies porn
[34]
tobacco and Brewers which means some of
[37]
the stalwart stocks in fun Smith
[39]
equities such as Philip Morris in pure
[41]
bronze and Diageo will not be there this
[43]
is an institutional fund so it's not for
[45]
our readers but it does signify the
[48]
growing interest in sustainable
[50]
investing doesn't it yeah it does a
[52]
certainly we've seen a surge in some of
[55]
the mud from an investor for the
[56]
sustainable investment and looking at
[59]
the assets over the last five years
[60]
we've seen a significant increase in
[63]
some of us are dedicated to this type of
[66]
investments and while historically it's
[69]
been mostly on the institutional side
[71]
we've seen that has been a significant
[74]
rise in term of assets that are
[77]
dedicated to reach other side segments
[80]
for example in terms of the overall
[83]
assets a retail side represented in 2012
[87]
about 10% of that and in 2016 is 25
[91]
percent so there's been increasing
[94]
interest from the retail side as well
[95]
and investors want to incorporate ESG
[99]
factors into their fund selection for
[101]
those that do we do have a Morningstar
[103]
sustainability rating don't we which
[105]
will can help people pick funds that
[107]
school above-average
[109]
on ESG ratings yeah we do and our
[113]
sustainability rating is a holding base
[116]
so it will provide investor for any type
[120]
of fund whether it's tagged as socially
[124]
conscious or not
[126]
how those funds how those companies that
[129]
a fund manager are invested score while
[132]
in term of the es Angie and so the
[136]
investor can use the
[138]
further metric to spot your good fun if
[141]
he has an interest in esse consideration
[146]
we've seen an increase interest or we've
[150]
seen from fund manager that they're more
[153]
and more taking into account those
[155]
factors as well and some of them have
[158]
been already taken into account doors
[161]
but they've made more efforts to express
[164]
them so their investor knows about them
[167]
so our sustainability rating will tell
[171]
you whether a fan scores well on those
[173]
metrics on altar and you can actually
[176]
support funds that actually need notes
[178]
socially-conscious but actually because
[181]
of the approach taken by the fan manager
[185]
those companies score really well and
[188]
you can sports similar characteristic of
[191]
those funds they tend to usually to look
[194]
for high quality companies with high
[199]
barrier to entry so a very hard business
[203]
model to replicate but also with cash
[209]
flow generation high margin so most of
[212]
those funds that score very well tend to
[214]
have similar characteristics and what
[216]
about a couple of funds which do score
[218]
highly on ESG factors that also have an
[221]
analyst rating perhaps you could
[222]
highlight a couple for us yes sure
[224]
actually the fans miss global equity
[227]
fund that we rate Gold's cause quite
[230]
well on those metrics it scores above
[232]
average which is what you call four
[235]
Globes as well and there's also to
[239]
celebrate it among our universe rate
[243]
that were rates which are the bny Milan
[247]
long-term global equity fund scores
[250]
above average and also the mfsl global
[254]
equity funds which actually scores very
[258]
high so five five globes Fatima thank
[260]
you very much Thank You Emma this is
[262]
Emma wall for Morningstar thank you for
