about finders fees in particular how you

can make money with finders fees I

always say it's not really that hard
[11]
working the work what's hard is getting
[13]
the work if you can get work if you can
[15]
generate projects you can always find
[18]
somebody to work the work so if you
[21]
generate work if you generate new
[23]
clients new business for you or for
[25]
other people you deserve to get paid so
[35]
what are finders fees well simply find
[38]
your speeds are when you get paid for
[40]
sending other people work essentially
[42]
it's a legal agreement to get paid a
[44]
percentage of whatever they're billable
[46]
fees are if you send them project work
[49]
so for example I had a client who was a
[52]
celebrity chef and she needed some PR
[54]
work done my agency doesn't do PR but I
[57]
know a lot of people who do so I made an
[60]
arrangement with a PR consultant that if
[63]
she was put on retainer to do work for
[65]
my client that I would receive or
[67]
percentage of her billable fees so she
[70]
did the work but I get a percentage so
[73]
when do you use a finder's fee generally
[76]
you use them when you have developed a
[78]
piece of business or project or have a
[80]
client who needs something that you
[82]
don't do you need to find someone who
[84]
does it and because that external vendor
[88]
that you're going to hook them up with
[89]
is essentially getting work completely
[91]
out of the blue they are paying you for
[94]
the privilege of having work served up
[96]
to them now if you do know the vendor
[100]
that you're referring the work to pretty
[103]
well you can do one of three things you
[105]
can either refer the work to them for
[107]
free which is good karma and you know
[109]
that's that's the way partnerships work

sometimes or good relationships between
[113]
different types of service providers

work you can just for them that work and
[118]
not expect a finer speed but you could
[122]
also have them do the work through you
[124]
so essentially work under the banner of
[126]
your agency or your creative
[128]
professional business and act as a
[131]
subcontractor and you will manage the
[134]
project

and bill the client and they will do the
[136]
work through you or you can use a
[139]
finder's fee and they will do the work
[141]
independently interact with the client
[144]
directly and just pay you a percentage
[146]
of what their billable rates are so how
[149]
do you set up a finder's fee agreement
[150]
well you start with a conversation
[152]
between you and the vendor that you want
[154]
to give the work to you say look I have
[156]
this piece of business it's work that I
[158]
don't do I'd love to forward you this
[160]
piece of business it's gonna be a great
[161]
billable project for you you didn't have
[163]
to go out and find it would you be
[166]
willing to engage in a finder's fee
[168]
agreement with me if they say yes that's
[170]
fantastic then you go to the legal form
[173]
process if they say no that's cool too

you don't have to give them the business
[177]
go out and find someone who is willing
[179]
to engage in a finder's fee with you if

they say yes what you have to do is you
[184]
have to work with a lawyer or there are
[186]
downloadable contracts free online that
[189]
stipulate the terms of a finder's fee
[191]
it generally names the parties involved
[193]
so the client who the project is from
[195]
the vendor who you're talking to and you
[198]
who's going to get paid a percentage of
[201]
those fees it lays out that terms of the
[204]
agreement so the percentage that you're
[205]
going to get paid generally this ranges
[207]
anywhere from 10 to 20 percent it also
[211]
lays out the time or the cadence how
[213]
often you will be paid monthly quarterly
[216]
yearly whatever that is and then also
[218]
the duration of the length of the
[220]
contract
[221]
is this going to be in effect for six
[224]
months 12 months a year all these things
[226]
are negotiable between you and the
[228]
vendor that you're giving that piece of
[230]
work to now there's something else that
[232]
you should be aware of too and that's
[234]
called a non-compete agreement and these
[236]
work very much in the same way but
[238]
slightly differently
[239]
generally here's an example you use a
[242]
partner on a project that you're doing
[244]
you need some your client needs some
[246]
video editing so you bring in a
[248]
subcontractor who's going to do that
[250]
video editing for your client you hire
[253]
them as a partner and then they work
[255]
under the name of your agency they work
[257]
under your agency banner but they get
[261]
introduced to the client during that
[263]
project and may have interactions
[265]
directly with that client a non-compete
[268]
Bremen is a contract that says
[270]
essentially I'm going to give you
[271]
exposure to my client and you're gonna
[273]
work this project with me but you can't
[275]
then go around me and work with a client
[277]
directly and get paid directly you're
[280]
going to work through my agency but the
[282]
work has to go through you and your
[284]
agency so you can make some money you
[287]
end up marking up their work of that
[289]
partner of yours and including it in the
[291]
project that you're doing for your
[292]
client there usually is a duration set
[295]
out for this contract can be six months
[297]
twelve months 24 months after that
[299]
period of time when the contract lapses
[302]
your subcontractor is allowed to work
[304]
with that client directly or that client
[307]
can go to your subcontractor directly
[309]
and they can work without you being
[311]
involved but a non-compete agreement
[314]
will set out a period of time where your
[317]
subcontractor can't work with your
[319]
client directly and essentially cutting
[322]
you out of that process the pros of
[324]
finder's fee agreements are pretty
[326]
significant both for you and for the
[328]
company or vendor that you find to be
[331]
able to do the work it basically comes
[334]
down in the fact if you can find some
[335]
work you get paid whether you can do
[338]
that work or not it's mutually
[340]
beneficial the vendor that you're
[343]
forwarding the work to is going to get
[344]
more work they're going to be happy
[346]
they're just gonna have to pay you a
[347]
percentage what they make and generally
[350]
they're happy to do it now there are
[353]
some cons to finder's fee agreements
[355]
they take a level of trust in the vendor
[358]
that you're forwarding the work to
[360]
because you're not going to have direct
[362]
visibility to the work they are doing
[363]
for that client or what ultimately
[366]
they're billable rates have been so you
[369]
have to have a level of trust that they
[371]
are going to return the payment to you
[373]
which is the percentage that you are due
[375]
as a finder's fee for the work that
[378]
they're doing from that client it's kind
[380]
of sometimes notoriously hard to track
[383]
and you may have to chase down payment
[385]
you may have to get back in touch with
[386]
that vendor and say hey did you ever do
[389]
work for that client afore and if so
[390]
what were the billable rates and can you
[393]
forward me find finder's fee for example
[396]
when I had that celebrity chef and I put
[400]
her in touch with a PR person they
[402]
good news is that I had a very good
[403]
relationship with my client the
[405]
celebrity chef so I was able to ask her
[407]
hey did you ever engage with that PR
[410]
person and if so how you know how long
[413]
have you been working with her and you
[416]
know how much was she charging you you
[419]
may not have the freedom with the client
[421]
to get that kind of information you may
[423]
have to rely on the vendor to have them
[426]
tell you and report back about the work
[429]
that they've done for that client that
[431]
you forwarded them so that's the
[433]
downside of finder's fee agreements now
[435]
keep in mind that no one has to engage
[437]
in finder's fee agreements if it's
[439]
uncomfortable for you then you don't
[441]
have to do it but for the most part
[443]
people are more than willing to do it
[445]
because they're happy to get work
[447]
totally out of the blue and they're more
[449]
than happy to pay your percentage of
[451]
that work because they didn't have to do
[453]
the work in getting it and a lot of
[454]
times they are then sending setting up a
[457]
long term relationship with that
[459]
external client and you're only going to
[460]
be getting a paid a percentage for a
[462]
period of time not the entire engagement
[465]
it's a mature and it's an upstanding way
[468]
of doing business and it protects you
[470]
legally it also sets clear expectations
[474]
around your relationships with whatever
[476]
business partners that you're forwarding
[478]
work to and it limits conflicts and
[481]
resentments when it comes to sharing
[483]
work and sharing clients between
[485]
companies and agencies and it protects
[487]
you and it protects your business
[489]
relationships so that's it I hope you
