[0]
Hi
[9]
I'm Mike Edwards
[13]
and we are at the National home
improvements show at Olympia
[16]
we've chosen this particular show to
launch
[19]
an initiative with our new partners
CheckaTrade
[23]
and and the initiative constantrates and
focuses
[28]
our attention on the removal of cowboy builders and rogue traders from our
[31]
Industry something we we've been very
keen on
[34]
since the inception of DIY Doctor fifteen
years ago
[37]
I'm here with the Checkatrade founder, Kevin Byrne, but before we have a chat about
[41]
wwhy Checkatrade are difference to every
other organization
[44]
let's have a quick look around the
show and see what's going on
[47]
My name's Mike Edwards
[55]
together with my partner we rund DIY Doctor and have done for 15 years
[60]
as well as giving you lots of free advice on how to build and look after your
[64]
home
[64]
we're also running a campaign, as Ive said
[67]
about ridding the UK of cowboy builders
[71]
I'd just like to do a very quick poll to find out how many of you here have
[76]
already suffered at the hands
[78]
of what we'll call cowboy builders or rogue tradesmen. So how many of you have already
[82]
suffered under those
[84]
circumstances
[85]
that's great, so a couple there already
suffered, so
[88]
how many here purely because they want
to stop that kind of thing
[93]
Thats great, thats what we need. To talk to the
[97]
people that
[98]
want to prevent this happening.
[105]
Ok, so you've seen us on stage doing the cowboy builder presentation
[109]
how to stop cowboy builders; how to stop rogue traders
[111]
and you saw people putting their hand up
when we said, you know, how nervous are
[115]
you about getting a tradesman
[116]
We're working with CheckaTrade, I've come round to see how many of those people
[121]
came to Checkatrade try to do something about the problem that they
[125]
think they have about employing tradesmen. So how was it for you?
[129]
Great, fantastic
[130]
the amount of customers that have come up to us
[133]
and said Ive been a victim
[136]
of a rogue trader, and how they want our help.
[139]
We've shown them the website, we shown the directories,
[142]
tell them what we do
[143]
It's been really good and walked away really happy
[149]
Thats the name of the game. Same at your end of the stand? Yep, it's been really good.
[153]
Thats what we are here for, thats what the initiative is about. We stop people getting ripped off
[156]
we don't like it, we don't want it, we are going to do something about it so the partnership
[160]
between DIY Doctor and Checkatrade is
[162]
is going places, if you're interested
in finding out more
[165]
just email us at info at diydoctor dot org dot UK
[169]
we'll put you in touch with Checkatrade and tell you how to avoid those rogue
[172]
traders
[173]
Kevin
[177]
nice to see you again. Thanks Mike, nice to be here
[181]
I introduced the idea that checkatrade is
completely different
[184]
to other organizations of their kind.
I'll touch on that
[188]
and then just let us and the audience know what Checkatrade stand for
[192]
well we are very different and theres
basically
[196]
different types of models out there consumers can go to to find a tradesman
[200]
you know the old classic ones like
yellow pages
[203]
or Thomson's, really have had their day
[207]
they do no checks at all, but then you have
[210]
local government you know some
local government schemes are very good
[215]
consumers can go to those in and I'll endorse those
[218]
and then there are
[222]
others, but we are the biggest of our type
[225]
in our sector and we will go and interview, we will
[228]
thoroughly vet thetradesmen and then we
will ask the consumer to give us
[232]
reports on those tradesmen
[234]
so we for sure are the biggest in the UK that
[237]
do that. There is another type as well
which I would not endorse
[241]
and that is, if you go to a website and
you're trying to find a tradesman but
[246]
you can't
[247]
what these web sites are doing is
they're asking you if your personal
[250]
details
[251]
how much money you've got all and a
description of the job, they're actually
[254]
selling your personal details to the tradesmen
[258]
yeah so I wouldn't endorse that. I would endorse the Checkatrade model and
[263]
I would endorse the the local county
councils
[268]
so lets get one thing
straight. Tradesmen themselves
[272]
pay to be a member of your organization?
[275]
They do. And consumers comes to find those
trades completely free?
[279]
They do. Then they choose the tradesmen they want to work with,
[283]
Instead of the other organisations that
[286]
actually rate their tradesmen, or they get
[289]
the home owners to rate the tradesmen
[292]
you've actually been to interview the tradesmen and had personal interaction with every one of them
[295]
which is unique. Yes it is unique and we
[298]
wont go to visit them on site,
[302]
we want to see them in their
homes or their
[305]
offices or where they operate from. Yep, so you know where they go
[308]
yet so we see them face to face
[312]
if the guys that work for me, the guy that interviews them feels I
[316]
wouldn't want this tradesman in my house. they'll walk away.
[320]
but we've got various things in place. These tradesmen must have a fixed abode
[324]
These tradesmen must have qualifications
[328]
in particular if they doing something
like gas or electrical, even
[332]
using a chainsaw or something like that, they've got to have the government
[335]
required regulatory qualifications
[338]
they must have public liability
insurance they cannot join unless they've got that
[343]
We want to see utility bills we want to see
[347]
driver's license or passport so we know
that -
[350]
Is that your face? Is that you ? Yes it is.
[353]
Then we will do a credit check. Then we
asked them to sign a form
[358]
which will allow us to go to trading standards and see if trading standards
[363]
have got any issues. We ask for
referees
[368]
from up to six to ten of their previous customers. We won't
[371]
write to them, we physically get on the
phone and phone
[375]
your customers up and ask them how well did you do.
[378]
Once all that has been completed
[381]
theyre now members of Checkatrade but from that point
[384]
on, every time one of our tradesmen
undertakes a job for consumer
[389]
they have to tell the consumer before all the
job starts
[393]
I'm a member of Checkatrade. At the end of a job, please
[398]
send this back to Checkatrade, score
me out of 10 on four different questions
[402]
and theres another couple of questions
in there as well
[405]
good or bad, those comments will be made live
[408]
One other thing
[411]
as well, that's obviously all in the consumers
interests
[415]
as are all of the things that Checkatrade do but one of the things that attracted me to the
[420]
the ethos of Checkatade is that you work on
behalf of the tradesmen as well
[424]
which most other organizations don't do
you're you're working for then
[429]
to promote them so you're coming at the
cowboy builder anglel from both
[433]
ends. your educating the consumer
and finding the good guys more work
[438]
which starves out the bad guys
[439]
absolutely. We want to isolate the rogue trader
[443]
but you know, we've got - you don't be a
victim of a rogue trader
[446]
no-one wants to be the victim of a rogue trader
[451]
but we have recently done a survey, just before the show, September 2013
[455]
and we asked two thousand homeowners
[459]
who havent used Checkatrade
[462]
or dont know much about Checkatrade
[466]
in the whole of the UK. Half of then - Half! said they'd been the victim of a rogue trader so this is a massive problem
[472]
Two or three years ago local government bought some statistics out saying
[477]
one in four will be unhappy with their tradesman
[479]
one in 5 will need part or all of the work
[482]
redone if you choose a tradesman at random.
Our figures are something like
[487]
(they fluctuate each month) but we would have one complaint
[490]
in about every 100 sorry one complaint
never 215
[495]
jobs our tradesmen complete so do we still get complaints? of
[499]
course we do, but the chances of having a
problem with a Checkatrade member
[504]
are probably the best odds there is in the UK
[507]
Well, that's quite impressive we
[510]
thoroughly did our research as Ive said to you
before, you know that
[514]
we we had a good look around the market
we needed somebody
[517]
that we could be absolutely confident to
share our brand
[520]
and the same with you, you know
we're in this together
[524]
we need to trust each other and look into
exactly what we do and I think hopefully
[529]
thats explained to you, what we do and what Checkatrade do
[533]
we're happy to be working together and ow own research shows exactly the same
[538]
thing that
[539]
one in 3 or 1 in 4 people at the minimum have
[542]
had a problem with the rogue trader of some
kind and if you speak to a lot of traders they
[546]
will tell you that
[547]
they've had a problem with the rogue
home-owner as well
[550]
so we're coming at this from both angles and pleased to
[554]
be working with each other each other and will continue to fight the good fight so
[559]
click into DIY Doctor and Checkatrade to get
[562]
your good tradesman
[574]
