[79]
in the spring of 1942 the raw navy was聽 reeling from heavy blows in the east聽聽
[85]
malaya and singapore had fallen and the remaining聽 british ships in the east indies had been聽聽
[90]
sunk at the battles of the java sea the task then聽 for admiral james somerville who arrived to become聽聽
[96]
the commander-in-chief of the eastern fleet at聽 the end of march was a difficult one at this聽聽
[101]
time a new eastern fleet was being hurriedly聽 assembled at ceylon modern-day sri lanka聽聽
[107]
to provide some kind of force to protect聽 india from potential japanese invasion聽聽
[113]
somerville's fleet was an impressive size on聽 paper he had three aircraft carriers formidable聽聽
[119]
indomitable and hermes and five battleships聽 war spite rameli's revenge resolution聽聽
[126]
and royal sovereign but this wasn't the full story聽 only warspite had been modernized and was capable聽聽
[133]
of the speed and endurance needed for extended聽 operations the other battleships were really聽聽
[138]
only suitable for convoy escort duty the carriers聽 too were flawed hermes was old and formidable and聽聽
[146]
indomitable's aircrews were inexperienced the two聽 modern carriers also had armored decks reducing聽聽
[152]
the number of aircraft that each could carry聽 somerville's total air group was only 39 fighters聽聽
[158]
and 57 strike aircraft the imperial japanese navy聽 understood the potential weakness of the british聽聽
[167]
in march 1942 they actually thought the eastern聽 fleet was even smaller at two battleships and聽聽
[172]
two carriers but believed heavy reinforcements聽 were on the way including two further carriers聽聽
[179]
and six more battleships this meant there was an聽 opportunity to destroy the british fleet before聽聽
[185]
its reinforcements could arrive and assure聽 japanese naval control over the indian ocean聽聽
[191]
it was an opportunity they were not about to聽 pass up at the start of april 1942 japan began a聽聽
[198]
two-prong defensive into the indian ocean聽 codenamed operation c the first phase saw聽聽
[204]
vice admiral zaburo azawa lead a task force聽 including the light carrier ryuho into the bay聽聽
[210]
of bengal once there over a five-day period聽 they rampage through allied shipping lanes聽聽
[216]
sinking more than 20 ships and around a hundred聽 thousand tons of shipping before returning to聽聽
[221]
port as if to underline the overwhelming naval聽 strength japan now enjoyed azaw's force went聽聽
[228]
completely unbothered by allied naval or air聽 forces as its side through britain's merchantmen聽聽
[235]
this was because to the south admiral somerville's聽 fleet had more than enough problems of its own
[246]
a few days before the end of march the main聽 japanese force departed the east indies聽聽
[251]
crossing into the indian ocean and progressing聽 up the coast of sumatra this was the core of聽聽
[257]
japan's naval strength the fearsome kido bhutai聽 with five fleet aircraft carriers and four fast聽聽
[264]
battleships under the command of admiral chucci聽 nagumo it was the same force as that which聽聽
[270]
had attacked pearl harbor and devastated port聽 darwin in australia in the middle of february聽聽
[277]
nagumo's fleet turned eastwards on april 3rd聽 intending to approach the ports of colombo聽聽
[282]
and trincomalee and launch massive airstrikes聽 aiming to once again catch allied ships in port聽聽
[290]
thankfully for the british the聽 japanese naval code had been broken聽聽
[293]
and so admiral somerville was forewarned聽 about the planned japanese offensive聽聽
[298]
british intelligence pointed to an attack聽 on colombo on april 1st and somerville's聽聽
[303]
own assessment was that japan would only聽 have perhaps two carriers available for this聽聽
[307]
operation he therefore devised a plan to take聽 his fleet to sea evade the japanese initially聽聽
[313]
and then launch knight torpedo attacks on the聽 enemy making use of radar-equipped bombers
[320]
admiral somerville assembled his fleet south of聽 ceylon on march 31st and waited unfortunately or聽聽
[328]
perhaps fortunately as we will see for two聽 days the japanese were nowhere to be seen聽聽
[334]
by april 3rd the slow unmodernized battleships聽 in the british fleet were low on fuel and as聽聽
[340]
far as somerville could make out there was no聽 imminent japanese attack coming he therefore聽聽
[345]
set about returning to port the bulk of the fleet聽 would move to a new anchorage at adu atoll in the聽聽
[351]
maldives with the heavy cruisers cornwall聽 and devonshire travelling back to colombo聽聽
[355]
and the carrier hermes heading for trincomalee聽聽
[360]
unbeknownst to somerville the japanese strike聽 force had merely been delayed leaving the east聽聽
[365]
indies and was twice the size of the force the聽 british expected barely a few hours after the聽聽
[371]
eastern fleet arrived at abdu atoll on april 4th聽 a catalina flying boat made contact with a large聽聽
[377]
japanese fleet steaming north east towards ceylon聽 somerville immediately stepped up the refueling聽聽
[383]
managing to get back to sea with his faster聽 ships grouped up as force a just after midnight
[391]
the british admiral still harbored ambitions聽 of pressing home an attack at night still聽聽
[395]
unaware at this point of the true strength聽 of the enemy fleet the cruisers cornwall聽聽
[401]
and devonshire were ordered to link up with聽 force a leaving colombo at 10 pm on april 4.聽聽
[407]
early the next morning the聽 japanese carriers swung into action
[414]
commander fuchida mitsuo led 91聽 japanese bombers on the attack run聽聽
[419]
escorted by 36 fighters at聽 8am colombo was hit hard
[426]
waves of japanese bombers appeared devastating the聽 port facilities with impunity the small numbers聽聽
[433]
of allied fighters on ceylon tried to fight聽 back but they were outnumbered and outgunned聽聽
[440]
the only positive for the british was聽 that little damage was done to shipping as聽聽
[444]
most had already left port but this was about to聽 change at 11 30 the cornwall and dorset shear were聽聽
[451]
spotted and shadowed by an enemy reconnaissance聽 plane the crew were fully aware of what the聽聽
[456]
lone aircraft heralded and sure enough after two聽 hours 80 dive bombers appeared over the horizon聽聽
[462]
led by lieutenant commander takashige agusa it聽 was a rapid and devastating onslaught within聽聽
[469]
20 minutes both ships had gone to the bottom聽 surviving barely long enough to inform somerville聽聽
[475]
of what was happening immediately on receipt of聽 signals from the cruisers somerville realized his聽聽
[482]
assessment of the japanese strength had been wrong聽 it was much more powerful than he had thought聽聽
[489]
in an instant his focus had to change from trying聽 to attack the enemy to just trying to keep his聽聽
[494]
remaining ships afloat as the historian evan聽 maudsley puts it somerville had suddenly realized聽聽
[500]
that he was not the hunter but the fox the聽 admiral's biggest fear now was that the japanese聽聽
[507]
would attack ado atoll but mercifully for him聽 they had no idea of its existence admiral nagumo聽聽
[514]
was in fact already steaming away from somerville聽 spending the next three days of repositioning his聽聽
[520]
fleet for the upcoming attack on trincomalee this聽 began in the early morning of april 9th again with聽聽
[527]
a large attack force devastating the port area聽 but failing to catch significant vessels in port聽聽
[534]
hms hermes and her escorting destroyer vampire聽 had left the previous evening to avoid the attack聽聽
[541]
it was not a planned departure so hermes was not聽 even carrying any aircraft when she was discovered聽聽
[546]
at 9am and a wave of 80 dive bombers again led聽 by lieutenant commander ragusa approached hermes聽聽
[554]
stood no chance and was hit again and again until聽 she sang all told more than 40 bombs found their聽聽
[563]
target at 1102 vampire went the same way when聽 her magazine exploded having completed their聽聽
[571]
operations admiral nagumo's fleet now steamed聽 away returning ultimately to japan to rest and聽聽
[576]
refit ahead of future campaigns though admiral聽 somerville had lost the carrier and two cruisers聽聽
[583]
he had actually been quite lucky had the japanese聽 arrived at salon when the entire eastern fleet was聽聽
[589]
together at the start of april the resulting聽 battle would have likely been devastating聽聽
[594]
particularly for the slow old battleships as it聽 was even before hermes was sunk somerville had聽聽
[600]
decided to pull his ships out of the eastern聽 indian ocean entirely the slow force b ships聽聽
[606]
would head for east africa the fast force a for聽 bombay the admiralty was not particularly happy聽聽
[612]
about this but as far as somerville was concerned聽 it was retreat or see the eastern fleet destroyed聽聽
[619]
further japanese attacks were to be expected and聽 perhaps even an invasion of india from the sea聽聽
[627]
winston churchill would later call this the most聽 dangerous moment of the war he was faced with a聽聽
[633]
seemingly unstoppable japanese advance that could聽 yet engulf india and the western indian ocean聽聽
[639]
while all the while the european聽 war remained in the balance聽聽
[643]
and the raw navy was being stretched to breaking聽 point across at least four major theaters聽聽
[650]
in fact it was japan's first and last major聽 foray into the indian ocean before too long聽聽
[656]
the operational commitments against the united聽 states in the pacific would be all-consuming聽聽
[660]
and then the battle of midway would happen聽 with this in mind there's a strong argument聽聽
[666]
that operation c was a strategic mistake that聽 japan's carriers would have been better served聽聽
[672]
strengthening their position in the south pacific聽 while the us was still reeling from pearl harbor聽聽
[678]
on the other hand the japanese did force a british聽 retreat from ceylon but in truth somerville's聽聽
[683]
ragtag fleet was not that much of a threat to聽 the new japanese holdings in southeast asia聽聽
[688]
anyway on the british side the indian ocean聽 raid as the battle would come to be known聽聽
[695]
was yet another humiliating episode though they聽 had escaped without major damage the degradation聽聽
[701]
of britain's naval power was exposed as so bad聽 as to require the surrender of large parts of聽聽
[706]
the indian ocean as well as the east indies聽 the frustrating thing for somerville was that聽聽
[712]
the situation could have been different聽 if only britain's priorities had been聽聽
[717]
shortly after the raid he wrote it looks to me聽 as if the japs can walk in anytime they like we聽聽
[723]
might lose india just for the sake of a handful聽 of aircraft and one or two decent ships the聽聽
[729]
interesting point here is that what summerville聽 was after particularly in terms of planes was聽聽
[733]
not a huge commitment of industrial capacity but聽 it ultimately wasn't available in part because the聽聽
[740]
government was fully committed to the area bombing聽 campaign over germany as morden points out a month聽聽
[746]
after a dozen british planes tried to defend聽 ceylon the raf would send 1 000 heavy and medium聽聽
[753]
bombers against cologne broadly the fighting of聽 the second world war for britain was ultimately聽聽
[759]
about prioritization and from the pre-war years聽 onwards the far east had taken a lower priority聽聽
[765]
for supplies troops ships and aircraft the indian聽 ocean raid and the raw navy's humiliating retreat聽聽
[773]
was the culmination of those decisions and of聽 the disastrous events of the previous few months聽聽
