[1]
take a trip down any arkansas highway
[4]
drive down any street in any city and
[6]
chances are you'll spot at least one
[9]
we're talking out about expired
[10]
temporary tags like this one and they
[13]
are not hard to find in arkansas even
[15]
though they are just that temporary a
[18]
lot of drivers seem to be testing the
[20]
limit of what that means so we dug a
[22]
little deeper and found out these
[24]
expired temp tags are costing the state
[27]
millions of dollars
[30]
whether you're stuck in the early
[32]
morning rush or on your evening commute
[34]
home
[35]
expired temporary tags are an all too
[38]
common sight in arkansas
[41]
past due not just by days but by weeks
[44]
months sometimes years i see them all
[47]
the time and it's almost like they're a
[49]
month late or like even more than that
[52]
we took a drive around little rock one
[53]
afternoon in less than 10 minutes we
[56]
spotted three cars with expired paper
[59]
tags at the dmv on rodney parham cyan
[62]
brown was able to pay for a new id but
[65]
her tags nearly three months past due
[68]
will have to wait it's hard right now
[70]
cover honestly it's cold the mom-to-be
[73]
says simply put she can't afford it but
[76]
knows putting it off means even more
[78]
money twelve hundred
[80]
that's that's what they tell me but by
[81]
time i go inside it's gonna be probably
[83]
more than that
[84]
because the fines
[85]
temp tags are just that temporary after
[89]
you purchase a vehicle in arkansas you
[91]
have 30 days to pay the sales tax and
[93]
get your plates if you don't it'll cost
[96]
you three dollars for every 10 days past
[99]
due plus a 10 percent sales tax penalty
[103]
not to mention you're at risk of being
[105]
pulled over
[106]
you know we do while we're on patrol we
[108]
do look for stuff like that and you know
[110]
when we do come across it beside them in
[112]
2021 the pulaski county sheriff's office
[114]
cited 62 drivers for expired tags
[118]
arkansas state police issued 551
[121]
violations for failure to register or
[124]
improper license tag in conway just
[126]
under 200 drivers were cited and in
[129]
little rock police issued a little more
[131]
than 1200 citations
[133]
it's something brown thinks about every
[135]
time she gets behind the wheel
[138]
are you worried about being pulled over
[140]
yes because that's another that's
[142]
another bill i have to pay for so just
[144]
how many drivers are hitting the roads
[146]
in arkansas with expired temp tags turns
[149]
out it's a question the department of
[151]
finance and administration has never
[153]
gotten before and the answer was
[155]
surprising even for them
[158]
i think i was guessing maybe five six
[160]
seven thousand tops
[162]
when it comes back at 29 400
[166]
even i was shocked 29
[168]
400 cars that's about the population of
[171]
izzard and van buren counties combined
[174]
it's a high number and it's costing the
[176]
state if those 29 thousand 400 vehicles
[181]
paid sales tax today that would be more
[182]
than 25 million dollars scott hardin
[184]
with the dfna says that's being
[186]
conservative the actual amount is likely
[189]
much higher
[192]
it's a number we took to state senator
[194]
bill sample chair of the senate revenue
[196]
and tax committee he says he'd like to
[198]
see that money go towards giving state
[200]
police troopers a raise we want to give
[203]
it to him
[204]
just finding a revenue stream and that
[206]
could be a revenue state trooper
[209]
stop one car a week each state trooper
[212]
that's out there on the road that would
[213]
take him and get it in addition to
[216]
harsher enforcement
[218]
sample says this state needs better
[220]
public transportation
[222]
those people that
[224]
like i say that they're driving
[226]
they might not have the funds to pay it
[228]
but they do need the transportation to
[230]
get to work and so that's a problem all
[232]
in itself now armed with these numbers
[234]
he plans to study what other states are
[237]
doing to fix the problem
[239]
we need to find some ways that we can
[241]
take and not only collect the money but
[243]
get people to work at the same time
[245]
we learned missouri passed a law in 2021
[248]
to crack down on this exact issue
[251]
rather than allowing drivers to take
[253]
possession of cars at dealerships and
[255]
assume they'll pay taxes later the
[257]
government will get a cut at the point
[259]
of sale greg kirkpatrick president of
[262]
the arkansas automobile dealers
[264]
association says it will likely take
[266]
legislative action before that happens
[269]
in arkansas not to mention getting
[271]
everyone on the same page we've had
[273]
conversations with the state
[276]
i'm not sure they're prepared for it yet
[278]
but
[278]
if
[279]
as time goes on this is probably an
[282]
issue that's going to have to be
[283]
addressed back at the dmv brown says she
[286]
hopes to get her permanent plate soon in
[288]
the meantime right now duck and dodge
[291]
the police
[292]
she won't stop glancing in her rear-view
[294]
mirror
[297]
hardin says before the 30 days is up
[300]
you'll get a letter like this one in the
[302]
mail as a reminder if you need an
[304]
extension he says there are a couple
[305]
scenarios where you can request one for
[308]
another 30 days and avoid the fines but
[310]
you still owe that sales tax 30 days
[314]
from the day you purchase the vehicle
