[0]
if you work for a technology company and
[2]
get rsus as part of your compensation
[5]
package then this video
[6]
is for you
[9]
i will be explaining exactly what rsu's
[13]
are
[13]
restricted stock units i will be talking
[15]
about the tax treatment of rsus and
[18]
i will be sharing the strategy that we
[20]
often use for our clients when dealing
[23]
with
[23]
rsu so let's get right down to it what
[26]
exactly are rsus well
[28]
they are a form of equity compensation
[31]
that's really popular
[32]
among technology companies like google
[35]
facebook
[36]
adobe oracle logitech
[39]
they're essentially company stock that
[42]
you get over time and it's going to
[44]
depend
[44]
on the contract that they give you so
[46]
for example if you
[48]
work for google let's say they might
[51]
give you
[51]
an rsu contract where you might be
[54]
awarded 40 google shares
[56]
that will vast over two years so that's
[60]
essentially receiving five google shares
[62]
every three months
[64]
so if the price of google let's say
[66]
increases to
[67]
two thousand dollars per share by the
[70]
time it passed
[70]
so five times two thousand dollars
[73]
you're essentially
[75]
might get ten thousand dollars worth
[78]
of company stock each quarter and that's
[81]
like forty thousand a year
[82]
so that's a considerable sum of money
[86]
what is the tax treatment for rsu's
[89]
rsus are essentially taxable income so
[92]
there's really no way around it you have
[94]
to pay federal
[95]
and state taxes when relevant so you
[98]
just want to make sure you check your
[100]
pay stub to make sure that your employer
[102]
is withholding
[103]
the sufficient amount of federal and
[105]
state taxes
[107]
from these rsus rsu strategy
[110]
so here's the thing if you just sit back
[114]
and do nothing and work for a company
[117]
for a really long time
[118]
you might end up accumulating hundreds
[121]
of thousands of dollars worth
[123]
in company stock so we we have a client
[126]
here at district capital
[128]
where when we met her she had like eight
[130]
hundred thousand dollars
[132]
worth of money all in one stop now you
[135]
might say wow alvin that's really
[137]
amazing
[138]
you've managed to or she has managed to
[140]
accumulate
[141]
that much money over time well it is
[144]
but you also are
[147]
holding that amount of money all in one
[151]
stock and that
[152]
i think in my opinion is super risky
[154]
because
[155]
you'll never know what might happen to a
[158]
company it might be
[159]
great now but what if there's an
[161]
accounting scandal in the future
[163]
or what if it goes bankrupt because of
[166]
the pandemic
[167]
look at general electric or ge it was
[170]
considered a safe stock
[171]
until it wasn't and now it's trading
[174]
at a fourth of its value four years ago
[177]
so one way to lower the risk
[179]
is to sell your rsu shares or
[183]
company stock shares that receive as
[186]
soon
[187]
as it invests and invest them in a
[190]
diversified
[191]
basket of stocks or funds so
[194]
diversification is really
[195]
a key component when thinking about
[197]
investments
[199]
now i know what you're thinking you're
[201]
probably like
[202]
alvin it's gonna be really hard for me
[204]
to get rid of these google shares i've
[206]
only seen them go up over time and i've
[209]
sort of fallen in love with these shares
[212]
but
[213]
ask yourself if you have fifty thousand
[216]
dollars worth of money
[217]
to invest now would you actually place
[221]
it all in just one stock
[222]
so just think about that so that's it my
[225]
friends i hope you learned something
[227]
about rsus they're essentially
[229]
stock compensation and it is taxable so
[232]
you want to make sure your employer is
[234]
withholding the correct
[235]
amount of federal and state taxes and
[238]
just think about risk management
[240]
when dealing with these rsus
[243]
if you do have an rsu your company might
[245]
also
[246]
be offering an espp program or an
[249]
employee stock
[250]
purchase program so you wanna make sure
[253]
you check out
[254]
our videos on espp and whether or not
[256]
you should participate in that
[258]
until next time
