I Can't Stop Pulling My Hair Out - YouTube

[1]
pull my hair out every single day I
[4]
would say if I'm not attacking an
[6]
eyelash I've been talking my actual hair
[9]
on my head
[10]
[Music]
[20]
trichotillomania broken down through
[24]
greek it trick is hair tillow is to pull
[27]
at mania as a manic or frenzy so
[30]
basically it's a manic frenzy of pulling
[33]
out your own hair
[39]
I can't exactly say why I pull my hair
[43]
out because it's very neurological I
[47]
just get sudden urges I can control my
[50]
hair pulling
[51]
to a certain extent but there are times
[53]
where I don't even know that I'm aware
[55]
of doing it until my hand goes numb or
[57]
my arm starts to hurts and then I kind
[59]
of just snap back into it and then
[62]
realize what I was doing that year old
[66]
Kelsey lives everyday with an urge to
[68]
pull out her own hair I will start
[72]
feeling like there's like ants and like
[75]
needles like poking my head and it just
[79]
it won't stop and then I kind of have
[81]
this yeah uncontrollable urge to
[83]
actually start digging around and trying
[86]
to find what hair is actually bothering
[88]
me and I can't stop until that hair is
[92]
removed which means that there's
[93]
probably 10 or 20 others that are going
[96]
down with it the perfect strand for me
[99]
though is something that's coarse and
[101]
wiry has an extremely completely
[104]
different texture than on the other hair
[105]
sometimes it feels really good to pull
[107]
my hair out because I am getting rid of
[110]
that sensation so I guess it can kind of
[112]
relax you in a sense other times it does
[116]
hurts and most of the time I don't
[120]
really know that I'm doing it
[121]
Kelsey first admitted she was pulling
[123]
her hair out to her parents when she was
[125]
just five years old I remember her
[128]
coming down the stairs and she had some
[131]
blank spots on the top of her head over
[133]
forehead and she finally admitted in
[137]
tears that she was pulling her hair out
[139]
and it's true and going into her bedroom
[143]
to find out what's going on like where
[144]
all this hair is we opened in a closet
[147]
door and there was a garbage can inside
[149]
her closet and it is full of hair going
[153]
up with my sister having
[154]
trichotillomania
[155]
I knew if she was stressed out because
[157]
there was patches of hair on the floors
[159]
I know how much I loved my hair and it's
[163]
like a security blanket for me so to not
[166]
have control over something like that it
[169]
wouldn't be easy when finally you get to
[172]
a point where
[172]
you can either cry about this disorder
[175]
or you can accept it we got to the
[178]
acceptance and we got there very very
[180]
fast
[182]
[Music]
[192]
Kelsey has tried a number of different
[194]
therapies and medicines for her
[196]
condition but she now manages it herself
[199]
every part of my body is completely
[201]
shaved so I don't have urges to go
[205]
anywhere else
[206]
ways that I deal with it to cover up the
[209]
ball patches as I wear a headband
[211]
usually throughout the day and if I'm
[213]
going anywhere I usually wear a wig okay
[218]
I told my fianc茅 about my condition
[223]
pretty much the first day that we met
[225]
bothered me a little bit at the
[226]
beginning but then I realized that it's
[229]
nothing she can do you know it's all
[230]
mental you know it's it's a disease
[233]
right and people don't understand that
[238]
when I see you're pulling her hair out
[240]
like I'll just joke jokingly and I'll
[242]
give her a little nudge or you know what
[245]
do you doing babe you know and then
[247]
she'll stop right away because then I
[249]
make her aware of it right
[252]
[Music]
[259]
having grown up struggling with her own
[261]
hair Kelsey now works as a hairdresser
[264]
with a focus on helping others with hair
[267]
loss she also speaks publicly about her
[273]
experiences to help raise awareness
[275]
about her condition
[276]
trichotillomania definitely inspired me
[278]
to get into hair dressing I needed to
[281]
find a way to cover my bald spots people
[289]
with skin conditions and sensitive
[292]
topics when it came to their hair the
[294]
reason why they came to me was because I
[295]
wouldn't judge them how can I judge
[297]
somebody when I have issues myself I
[302]
think people are ashamed to talk about
[304]
the condition because who wants to admit
[307]
that they pull their own hair out I have
[309]
tried it all I've put gloves on my hand
[312]
with duct tape wrapped around it this
[315]
disorder is very relentless and it likes
[319]
to just take control so you have to
[321]
constantly find crafty ways to to stop
[324]
yourself from doing it I know that my
[327]
only purpose to be here can't just be to
[330]
live it's to work with what everyone
[333]
might see is a weakness and turn into a
[335]
strength so my confidence kind of came
[337]
from
[339]
not letting my disorder rule my life the
[342]
courage that she show was the strength
[343]
that she shows is absolutely amazing she
[346]
has not only come into herself she's
[351]
also helped countless people to come
[355]
into their own as well I don't let your
[358]
concealer mania control my life because
[360]
it's what I have not who I am
[365]
