How To Stop A Tantrum Due To A Demand: Applied Behavior Analysis - YouTube

[0]
hi my name is Heather Nunziato I'm a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with
[5]
Brett DiNovi & Associates in this video I'll be showing you clips of a
[10]
child that is completely engaging in homework refusal he's screaming he's
[15]
crying and he's just keeps on repeating that he just does not want to do his
[20]
homework and that it might be too hard for him so you do want me to call her
[23]
then but all kids have to do homework that's how they get smart do you think
[36]
all the kids in our class want to do the homework from watching that clip we can
[41]
only hypothesize what we think that function of his behavior could be
[45]
because we know in the world of applied behavior analysis we can't start
[50]
interventions we can't start writing those programs until a proper functional
[54]
analysis has been completed so we can only hypothesize from watching this
[59]
video and I might say that this video this child's behavior is maintained by
[66]
escape from demands of doing his homework from the fourth edition task
[70]
list II - 0 1 which is antecedent interventions I all need one which is
[75]
non contingent reinforcement so what is non-contingent reinforcement that's when
[87]
you provide reinforcement freely and often so in the sake of this behavior
[93]
which we're gonna say was maintained by escape we're going to give this student
[99]
as many breaks as he possibly can so by providing those breaks it's going to
[105]
serve as an evaded effect for his challenging behavior he won't have the
[109]
motivation to engage in the challenging behavior because he's getting those
[113]
breaks often so if the breaks are readily available to him this boy won't
[118]
have to tantrum to get out of my life but I already did homework so do you
[132]
want to just go to bed then instead all you see - zero - is unwanted effects of
[144]
punishment so we see them on that she's telling the Sun just go to your room
[153]
then if you're going to act like this at the table so that's going to negatively
[160]
reinforced her behavior why because it's getting rid of the child and he's being
[166]
sent to his room so she no longer has to hear that tantrum why is that not going
[171]
to work because punishment is temporary why because it's not getting rid of the
[177]
behavior altogether it's temporarily getting rid of this behavior so when he
[182]
comes back from out of his room and she represents the homework again what's he
[187]
gonna do he's gonna tantrum again so that's why in behavior analysis we
[192]
always want to use reinforcement before starting any punishment next I'm going
[198]
to lightly go over extinction which is D - 18 or C - oh three so extinction is
[206]
withholding reinforcement for a previously reinforced response so in
[215]
this case the child will no longer be able to have the opportunity to go to
[220]
his room he has to stay at the table so this is called escape extinction he's no
[225]
longer able to leave he has to get his homework done it might take two hours it
[230]
might take five hours we don't know but if the parents follow through the
[235]
results are definitely going to benefit everybody all you have to do is just
[239]
look all you have to do is just fill in the rest of the letters it's only two
[244]
letters two letters each
[264]
lastly I'm gonna briefly go over differential reinforcement of
[268]
alternative behavior which is D - 21 on the fourth edition task list so a DRA
[275]
is when you reinforce an alternative appropriate behavior instead of the
[280]
tantrum
[286]
so we just heard this this little guy say I don't like doing homework it's too
[291]
hard I don't want to do it so instead of saying that a more socially valid
[296]
behavior would be especially at his age would say I need a break
[300]
so he gets out of doing his homework for a little bit and he's no longer crying
[304]
and screaming for then you want to go to bed don't yell at me it's not nice cuz
[313]
I'm gonna show you why you're holding I'm holding my phone I recorded the
[316]
whole thing and your tantrum because I want you to see how bad you're acting
[325]
for a Dra or an SCT phrase remember that the
[329]
function is always the same so that I need a break is maintained by the escape
[334]
behavior but the topography is different so the function remains the same but the
[340]
form is different
