PuqPress Q2 VS MINI is an Automatic Tamper Right for you? | Review - YouTube
Channel: Coffee Parts
[0]
hi i'm peter from coffee parts and today
[2]
we're looking at the puck press mini
[3]
versus the puck press q2
[5]
let's see which one's better for you
[18]
so both these tampers by puck press are
[20]
made in the netherlands
[21]
both tamp your coffee fast and level and
[24]
consistently
[25]
so what is the real difference the
[27]
difference between the q range which is
[28]
what we have here
[30]
is actually three in the range so you've
[31]
got the mini the q1 which we
[33]
don't have on display mainly because we
[34]
don't really carry it and the q2
[37]
now the differences are your tam cycles
[39]
how many tamps you can do
[41]
daily and what does a warranty look like
[43]
so on the mini
[44]
which is really made for homes or low
[46]
volumes they really cap
[47]
out at 100 times a day when the q1 does
[51]
300 so
[51]
you think about your smaller volume cafe
[54]
and the q2
[55]
is you know top of the line unlimited
[57]
tabs not only unlimited temps
[59]
daily but your warranty is also
[61]
unlimited time so
[62]
after two years you've got full warranty
[64]
unlimited times when
[66]
the mini and the q1 do have a service
[68]
cycle so what does that mean
[70]
in practice in practice it really does
[72]
come down to the differences between
[73]
them being volume of use
[75]
but they're all other little slight
[77]
subtle differences
[79]
mainly in how you adjust the forks on
[81]
them how
[82]
many program modes they have three
[84]
program modes versus five program modes
[86]
and the other difference between them is
[89]
the tamping pressure range
[90]
so on the mini you've got a range of
[92]
between 10 and 30 kilos
[94]
when on the q2 you've got to range
[95]
between 5 and 30 kilos so it allows for
[98]
a little bit of softer tamp
[99]
both of which can be increased or
[101]
decreased in increments of one kilo
[103]
so on this one for example five six
[105]
seven you get the drift
[107]
on this one from 10 on to 30. now that
[110]
also means on they've got different
[111]
program modes
[112]
when you've got three program modes on
[114]
this one and five
[116]
on the q2 the modes are shown under here
[119]
but basically
[120]
you've got them so they can tamp twice
[122]
and you can tamp
[123]
twice normal or twice a bit slower so
[125]
you don't when the tabs pulling up
[127]
you don't disrupt that that coffee cake
[129]
and reduces channeling etc
[131]
you got the single tam but also on this
[133]
one you've got the
[134]
hulk and the soft tam because this one
[136]
does go down to five kilos
[138]
on this one you pretty much only have
[140]
the speedy which is the two quick times
[142]
the precise which is
[143]
two times a bit slower and the single
[145]
tamp now talking about tamp speeds they
[147]
both tamp at one point three seconds per
[149]
time
[150]
so obviously if you're doing two tanks
[151]
it's gonna be around the two and a half
[153]
three second range
[156]
let's look at setting these tampers up
[158]
when you get them so what you'll need to
[160]
do to set up your portafilter
[161]
and then we'll also look at what it
[163]
looks like to clean them so firstly
[165]
we'll start off with this q2
[166]
and you can take this cover off
[170]
bring it upside down and with the tool
[171]
that it comes with it
[173]
once you lock in your portafilter you
[175]
bring your portafilter in there
[179]
let's turn it off
[182]
well we're doing these things live make
[185]
sure it's off
[186]
when you get it take the plate off take
[189]
the top off
[191]
you turn them upside down and you loosen
[195]
the two
[195]
brackets here here's my little hidden
[198]
tool here
[199]
so it does come with these tools it
[201]
comes with the tool for this and also
[203]
the tool for cleaning
[204]
so if you just loosen these two
[208]
[Music]
[210]
once you've loosened it the beautiful
[211]
thing about this one is if you look
[213]
under here
[214]
you've got a dial that allows you to
[216]
dial it up and down slightly so you
[218]
don't really have to be holding it
[220]
and trying to get it all lined up like
[221]
you do in the mini so effectively if you
[223]
put in your portafilter
[225]
you can dial this down to get it nice
[227]
and tight
[229]
whoops wrong way and then
[232]
once you've got it nice and tight you
[234]
can remove it
[236]
tighten it up and it's now set so it
[238]
makes it easier to set up for any
[240]
portafilter being a naked
[242]
a normal single double or llamas or
[244]
coursing or double
[245]
once that's done just flip it back
[246]
around
[248]
put the plates back on and that's set
[250]
just going back to the mini it's
[252]
the same function let's just
[255]
turn it off it's the same function but
[258]
when you have it upside
[259]
down you actually do have to hold it to
[262]
really get it
[263]
dialed in you don't have the adjustment
[265]
which is kind of nice
[266]
but let's be honest you're only really
[267]
setting them up once so not the end of
[269]
the world
[270]
so we'll just talk about cleaning really
[273]
quickly
[273]
straight away so when you do have them
[275]
on to clean them if you just press this
[277]
down for half a second the bottom button
[280]
you'll see that the head comes down
[281]
quickly wipe them with it with a cloth
[284]
just to get rid of that static
[285]
so that's just a quick plan to actually
[288]
clean up
[289]
properly you do the same thing that you
[292]
for like a deep clean you'd pull the
[294]
cover off
[296]
you bring it down and then you undo the
[299]
nut
[299]
by undoing it all completely and pulling
[302]
out this whole piston
[304]
the whole head comes out you can clean
[306]
not only the tamp head
[307]
but also all the chamber inside and that
[309]
should be done daily in a cafe
[311]
environment
[312]
in saying that this head or all the
[314]
camps
[315]
we carry are 58.3 mil so to cover
[318]
pretty much most machines and vst
[320]
baskets they do come with a 58 but we
[322]
don't carry them mainly because we're
[324]
focused on the more speciality end of
[326]
the market
[331]
and once you remove it it's just a
[333]
matter of cleaning this head it's
[335]
non-stick
[336]
and cleaning inside that chamber then
[339]
just reverse the process to put it back
[341]
in
[343]
we'll do some movie magic and chop it so
[346]
you guys see it just in one second flat
[352]
and we're back with practice we'll get
[356]
faster because you are doing that daily
[357]
but effectively hit that button back up
[361]
and there you go it's clean back to
[363]
normal now to get into the program mode
[366]
you actually hold this button for five
[367]
seconds
[368]
and it will cycle into currently will be
[371]
on p0
[372]
and you can just go through the modes p1
[375]
p2
[376]
and there you go bringing it back down
[378]
to p0 lock it in
[381]
and once it's locked in to go up and
[382]
down in tamp
[384]
it's obviously self-explanatory just
[386]
bring it down or up
[388]
and so 20 means 20 kilos
[391]
and that's kind of it so you just have
[393]
to adjust the four
[395]
adjust what um mode you're in and adjust
[398]
the weight
[399]
same on the on the mini here obviously
[402]
only three
[403]
modes but you adjust your fourth which
[405]
is a little bit more work than on this
[406]
one
[407]
adjust the tamp and you're ready to go
[410]
in saying that the cleaning is exactly
[412]
the same
[413]
so let's look at these actually tamping
[416]
in operation
[416]
we'll get a grinder out we'll grind some
[418]
coffee and we'll just show you what two
[420]
tabs on each one looks like
[422]
that's the slower tab and what a quick
[425]
tamp
[425]
looks like so
[429]
i know you guys have been wanting to see
[431]
them in action so here we go
[432]
i've got the mini set up as the standard
[435]
tam
[436]
and the cue to set up as a slow tam or
[440]
basically program mode one so let's just
[442]
grind out some coffee
[444]
we're just using the niche for this we
[446]
could be using whatever grinder
[455]
so what the what the pucks really say
[458]
is that hand tamping operation covered
[460]
in heaps of videos
[461]
where it's not great on your wrist not
[462]
great on your shoulder and elbow
[464]
and also you sometimes not getting a
[466]
level tan consistent tan
[468]
etc 1001 videos talking about that what
[470]
we're focusing on is just the operation
[472]
of these tampers
[473]
so put it in i'm in an awkward position
[475]
here for the video but
[476]
just put it in tamps twice there you go
[479]
and it's an
[480]
even clean tan now on the pucks compared
[484]
to some of the other machines like a
[485]
slingshot it doesn't polish it at the
[487]
end
[487]
but it does do a really clean crisp
[490]
finish this one being a 58.3
[492]
it really has gone nice to the edge and
[495]
that cake looks pretty awesome to me
[498]
we'll just grind out a second one and do
[500]
it on the q2
[501]
once again it's not too much of a
[503]
difference between these two it's just
[505]
the motor capacity so a hundred times a
[507]
day to unlimited temps
[508]
and a few more function modes and we're
[510]
gonna be on function mode one
[512]
let's just grind out some more coffee
[522]
and let's go on the
[525]
q2 and bear in mind that was the slower
[529]
tam
[530]
and once again really clean time really
[533]
clean um
[534]
cake now the difference was on the slow
[538]
tamp
[538]
when it pulls back up it pulls up a bit
[540]
slower so it's not
[542]
basically giving a bit of suction
[543]
disrupting the middle of that
[545]
that coffee cake just to get more
[547]
consistent and in theory less channeling
[549]
and more even distribution
[550]
something you might notice a bit more if
[552]
you're using a naked portafilter with
[554]
the flow
[554]
but that's your normal tam soft ham and
[557]
there's
[557]
gonna be three more modes on these but
[560]
we'll let you play with them when you
[561]
get them home
[562]
overall one things i love about these is
[565]
their consistency and that's what
[567]
they're made for
[568]
they're awesome they're consistent get
[569]
the same temp every time
[571]
bring removes one variable so if you're
[573]
weighing your coffee now and you're
[575]
tamping consistently
[576]
there's two big variables have been
[577]
removed the home
[579]
one depending on what you consider an
[581]
affordable price point
[583]
is more affordable than the q2 or some
[585]
other tampers out there
[586]
but obviously it's not going to compare
[588]
to a hand tamp in price
[590]
a lot of people are going to say you
[591]
don't need a old tradition etc
[594]
this is for those that want the
[596]
automated and really to narrow it down
[598]
with the q2 the unlimited tams it really
[601]
does work well
[602]
personally one pet hate that i don't
[604]
like about them is the power cable
[607]
being at the rear i really like seamless
[609]
designs
[610]
especially if it's an island bench or in
[611]
a cafe don't like that
[613]
facing the customer side don't like the
[615]
switches at the back
[616]
and not a big fan of the menu on the
[619]
side would rather really be
[620]
barista focus on the front and the power
[623]
seamless
[624]
but i don't think that's the reason
[626]
people are buying or not buying these
[628]
they're buying for the functionality and
[629]
the look
[630]
so effectively for home you go to the
[632]
mini busy cafe you go
[634]
to q2 i'm not sure when you'd go q1 if
[637]
you've
[637]
had a quiet cafe they don't ever see us
[640]
being busy personally i just like going
[642]
and knowing you've got a runway so if
[644]
you did become busy
[645]
and it's just future proof yeah that
[648]
basically
[649]
now i know electric campers are a little
[651]
bit controversial and there's a big
[653]
debate between hand-tamping electric
[655]
tanking
[655]
do we need them and their price point
[658]
but i would love to know
[659]
between the puck mini and the q2 which
[661]
one do you prefer which one would you go
[663]
for or would you go for another tap all
[665]
together like the xeno art or the killer
