[0]
joining me now Congressman Andy Beggs
[2]
the Republican from Arizona and member
[4]
of the House oversight and Judiciary
[6]
committees Congressman you and 31 of
[8]
your colleagues sent a letter to DHS
[9]
secretary mayorkas demanding answers
[11]
about this vetting process Jennifer
[14]
Griffin was on the ground in Europe
[17]
taking a look at how all of this is
[19]
being done talking to the chairman of
[21]
the Joint Chiefs what do you think about
[22]
about that report does it put your mind
[24]
at ease at all where this vetting
[26]
process is concerned
[29]
well Martha thanks for having me um you
[32]
know we we knew that there was a vetting
[33]
process going on uh with fingerprint and
[36]
Biometrics Etc but what we don't know is
[39]
what we don't know and that that is what
[41]
were these folks doing in Afghanistan so
[43]
right now the vast majority of people
[45]
are coming in as refugees are coming in
[49]
on a parole they're not sivs which is a
[51]
special interest Visa the vast majority
[53]
are coming in as a parole that secretary
[56]
Homeland secretary mayorkas is able to
[59]
to use we've asked for very specifics we
[62]
think there's a lot of generalities
[64]
being stated out there but we don't know
[68]
what they did in in Afghanistan what
[70]
were they doing in Afghanistan these
[72]
individuals there are a lot of them that
[73]
were helping U.S troops and soldiers and
[76]
and deserve certainly to receive SIV
[79]
status Etc but the reality is
[82]
even with what uh General milley was
[85]
describing to Jennifer it doesn't tell
[88]
us what was going on in country per se
[90]
it tells us what we know in our
[92]
databases so when you have somebody
[95]
cross our border and we we vet them for
[99]
what we know about them in our databases
[101]
we have no idea what they were doing in
[104]
their Homeland and that's a big big
[106]
concern to us yeah and what you touch on
[108]
is that the majority of the sivs were
[110]
left behind we heard that from the
[112]
general in charge so a lot of these are
[115]
refugees who wanted to get out for
[118]
various reasons and we just heard about
[120]
that that vetting process but you know
[122]
what my mind always goes to in this
[124]
conversation is why a lot of this wasn't
[126]
done months ago as we looked at the exit
[130]
plan for Afghanistan which was clear the
[132]
president said he wanted to be out
[133]
initially by September 11th then he
[136]
moved it up to August 31st I think there
[138]
were some concerns about having that day
[140]
obviously with all of the weight that
[142]
that carries and now even a lot of
[145]
Democrats are very critical about the
[147]
planning that went into this we know so
[149]
many SIV applications went out months
[151]
ago even years ago for some of these
[153]
individuals that we could have been
[154]
looking at all this carefully here's
[155]
Senator Blumenthal listen to this
[159]
oh it's a quote okay he says I've been
[162]
deeply frustrated even furious at our
[164]
government's delay in an action there
[166]
will be plenty of time to seek
[168]
accountability for the inexcusable
[169]
bureaucratic red tape that stranded so
[171]
many of our Afghan allies for now my
[173]
focus remains on getting those planes in
[175]
the air and safely out of our safely to
[178]
our air base in Doha where they have
[179]
already been cleared to land so you know
[182]
obviously there's uh there's a lot of a
[184]
lot of people very unhappy with how this
[186]
whole thing was handled on both sides
[189]
yeah Martha that's for sure and and
[192]
don't forget we have Americans that are
[194]
left behind we have we do have a lot of
[196]
sivs left in there and this could have
[199]
been uh prevented I mean all of this
[202]
could have been prevented uh and done in
[204]
a more orderly fashion and you know
[206]
that's part of my problem with secretary
[208]
blinken because it was his team that
[211]
failed on this and has uh put this
[214]
country and our allies in very serious
[217]
Jeopardy you know it's interesting um
[219]
he's going to testify before Congress uh
[223]
early part of next week what would you
[225]
what would you want to to ask him what
[228]
do you think needs to be questioned for
[229]
Anthony blinken who has the sort of
[232]
unenviable task now of getting all of
[234]
these people out uh this has been
[236]
clearly pushed to the state department
[238]
and it was their responsibility prior to
[239]
all of this as you point out but
[241]
President Biden wants to move on we know
[243]
that
[244]
yeah they want to leave this behind and
[246]
I and but I think secretary blink is
[247]
going to have to answer for uh what was
[249]
their plans how why were they executed
[252]
so poorly
[253]
um was he listening to intelligence I
[256]
mean the intelligence Community
[258]
um from what I have understand from
[260]
briefings that I've heard they were
[262]
giving the correct information that is
[264]
that the Taliban would come in and over
[265]
overrun the country immediately why were
[268]
they not listening to the intelligence
[269]
Community what did they think was going
[271]
to happen differently and then I would
[274]
like to I think we need to get into the
[275]
full vetting process and uh why they
[278]
didn't start sooner and why we don't
[281]
know what happened in country and why
[283]
we're now going to parole these people
[285]
instead of SIV status
[287]
Carson Biggs thank you very much a lot
[289]
of questions
