What is ETF? Is it same as Nifty BeES? | CA Rachana Ranade - YouTube

Channel: CA Rachana Phadke Ranade

[26]
Hey folks!!! CA Rachana Ranade here and I welcome聽 you all to another interesting lecture on bees,聽聽
[31]
I know it has got nothing to do聽 with honey bees but let at least聽聽
[35]
as sweet as honey, let's hope that our financial聽 education lecture is as sweet as honey tastes聽聽
[43]
now let's understand what are B's okay, B's are聽 nothing but benchmark exchange traded schemes,聽聽
[49]
I am sure you might be like what is this now so聽 let's understand each and every terminology one by聽聽
[54]
one. The very first word is benchmark. Benchmark聽 means what? It is something like a standard聽聽
[60]
something with which I can compare my own聽 performance okay so have we come across the聽聽
[67]
concept of benchmark right back when we were聽 in school yes so just as an example if teacher聽聽
[72]
would have told your parents that your child has聽 scored 85 percent okay now for your parents to聽聽
[77]
understand is 85 percent good or bad? Possibility聽 number one can be they compare your performance聽聽
[83]
with average performance of the kids in the class聽 okay generally parents should compare it with the聽聽
[88]
most brilliant person in the class but let's聽 consider that aside if they compare it with the聽聽
[93]
average performance in the class can I say on an聽 average assume that kids have gotten 83 percent聽聽
[99]
then your performance is better than others so聽 your performance has outperformed the benchmark聽聽
[106]
okay. What was the benchmark? Average marks which聽 the students scored in the class. Similarly for聽聽
[111]
stocks what can be a benchmark benchmark a聽 standard with which I can compare that can聽聽
[116]
be like nifty that can be like Sensex okay this聽 is just an example so I hope you have understood聽聽
[122]
the concept of a benchmark so in in the whole聽 word of bees benchmark the first word is clear.聽聽
[127]
What is the second one exchange traded scheme聽 in that exchange what exchange are the exchanges聽聽
[133]
exchange where you exchange where you trade聽 in stocks and commodities in other securities聽聽
[139]
best examples of exchanges BSC, NSC, right so聽 benchmarks exchange now traded schemes so exchange聽聽
[146]
trader traded on the exchange schemes. Now scheme聽 is nothing but like a theme okay so for example uh聽聽
[154]
a theme can be like investing in banks, a theme聽 can be like investing in blue chips, a theme聽聽
[161]
can be investing in gold okay so all these are聽 different, different themes different, different聽聽
[166]
schemes so I hope you have understood benchmark聽 exchange rated schemes that is nothing but Bee's.聽
[175]
Now let's understand what could be the different聽 types of Bee's or different types of ETF's? I聽聽
[180]
am sure you might have heard about the word ETF,聽 but just in case if you have not, we are going to聽聽
[184]
talk about ETF's in another one or two minutes聽 okay. So till then let's understand what are聽聽
[188]
the different types of bees or different types of聽 ETF's, possibility number one they can invest in a聽聽
[194]
specific thing or they can invest in a a mixture聽 of things okay you might be like what is this聽聽
[202]
let me give you a simple example consider a fruit聽 investing in a fruit single fruit or investing聽聽
[208]
in a fruit salad okay now what is investing in a聽 fruit investing in a fruit is like investing in a聽聽
[214]
single commodity okay so if I want to turn聽 this apple into gold in this case I can say聽聽
[221]
that I am investing in gold through a gold ETF or聽 through gold bees okay so in this case what is the聽聽
[228]
scheme scheme is investing only in a single theme聽 single scheme which is of gold nothing else okay,聽聽
[234]
possibility number two now it's a fruit salad now聽 it's not only one fruit there are bunch of fruits聽聽
[239]
different different fruits mixed into a fruit聽 salad now instead of multiple fruits if I go with聽聽
[245]
multiple bank shares that will be like聽 bank bees or it will be like bank ETF's.聽聽
[252]
I hope you are understanding this right so聽 if you remember bees is S stands for scheme聽聽
[257]
scheme can be like investing in a single thing,聽 single theme or it could be a mix of a theme聽聽
[262]
okay, so there could be a few other ETFs as well聽 like you might have heard about Bharat Bond EFT,聽聽
[268]
in which a majority of public sector undertakings聽 are, are the ones in which the investment is done聽聽
[273]
okay so I hope you have understood that there聽 are multiple it could be a Sectoral ETF like it聽聽
[277]
could be a Bank ETF, it could be a Commodity聽 ETF like a Gold ETF, it could be it could be聽聽
[284]
like Bond ETF's like Bharat Bond ETFs but more on聽 ETFs is coming up in the next part of the video.聽聽
[291]
So just in case if you do not know what is an聽 ETF, ETFs are nothing but two investment ideas聽聽
[296]
brought together okay so understand EFT is nothing聽 but a combination of something like a stock聽聽
[302]
plus mutual fund now why is an ETF like a stock聽 first of all let's understand why it is like a聽聽
[308]
stock? Number one because it is it is traded on聽 the stock exchange that is why it is like a stock.聽聽
[314]
Number two it is prices keep on fluctuating every聽 second, every microsecond that is why it is like聽聽
[318]
a stock. Number three if we were to buy an ETF,聽 then we can set a limit order I am sure you might聽聽
[324]
be knowing that there is something like a market聽 order, there is something like a limit order,聽聽
[327]
we can also set a limit order for ETF that is why聽 it is like a stock. Number four whenever we buy聽聽
[333]
it if it directly comes to our Demat account that聽 is the reason why it is like a stock okay so I聽聽
[338]
hope you have understood why ETF's is very similar聽 to a stock. Now let's understand why it is like a聽聽
[344]
mutual fund but wait not like any mutual fund it's聽 very close to an index mutual fund. Now what's聽聽
[351]
an index mutual fund, it tracks an index so just聽 like it can be like a nifty ETF like nifty bee's聽聽
[357]
right second point it has comparatively lower聽 expense ratio now what's expense ratio if you聽聽
[362]
want to know that I have already covered it in one聽 of my previous videos you can check it out later聽聽
[366]
and number three the portfolio turnover ratio聽 is also comparatively less if I check it,聽聽
[371]
if I compare it with actively managed mutual聽 funds so I hope you have now understood聽聽
[376]
what is an ETF. ETF is nothing but a combination聽 of stocks and a combination of index mutual fund聽聽
[383]
instead of saying a combination directly it's聽 very close to both these concepts put together.聽
[391]
Well I hope you have understood what is Bees, you聽 also have understood what is ETF's, but now the聽聽
[397]
big question what is the connection between Bees聽 and ETFs the simplest connection is nothing but聽聽
[403]
Bees is a type of ETF's okay when was this first聽 launched? Nifty ETF was nifty bees basically was聽聽
[412]
the very first ETF which was launched in India聽 way back in 2002. Now if I am talking about聽聽
[419]
buying nifty can I buy nifty directly? No, I can聽 not, I can not buy nifty, like I am buying a stock聽聽
[424]
I might have to buy its future or its option but聽 if I am scared of futures and options then what聽聽
[428]
is the scenario? what is the alternative?聽 For that I can buy nifty bees okay now聽聽
[434]
nifty bees but will I have to invest a lot of聽 money so for example one unit of nifty is today聽聽
[442]
as I am shooting the video it's somewhere聽 around fourteen thousand five hundred. Does聽聽
[445]
it mean that if I were to buy hundred, fourteen聽 thousand five hundred into hundred? No, no, no,聽聽
[450]
one unit of nifty bees is approximately 100th of聽 nifty okay so if you check this out on the screen聽聽
[458]
as I am shooting the video nifty had closed on the聽 previous day on fourteen thousand five zero seven聽聽
[463]
to uska one hundredth will be 145 rupees roughly聽 okay but if you now check nifty India ETF's聽聽
[470]
right here it is around 155 okay so roughly聽 100th of nifty so I hope you have understood聽聽
[477]
that how you can get an exposure to the best 50聽 companies, to the top 50 companies by investing聽聽
[483]
a comparatively very small amount that is the聽 important feature of nifty bees number one.聽聽
[489]
Number two if I want to compare nifty bees聽 with some other bees like what like gold bees,聽聽
[495]
like bank bees, then which one is comparatively聽 cheap if I am considering expense ratio聽聽
[501]
okay again I told you I have covered expense聽 ratio in one of my previous videos but if you聽聽
[505]
can check it out on this table again for Nippon聽 India ETF bank bees the expense ratio is point聽聽
[512]
one eight percent for Nippon India ETF gold bees聽 the expense ratio is point eight two percent聽聽
[517]
but if I am talking about Nippon India ETF nifty聽 bees it's just 0.05 so I hope you have understood聽聽
[524]
that it is also comparably cheaper expense ratio聽 is comparatively less and one more important聽聽
[530]
advantage of nifty bees is that it's absolutely聽 transparent I know where my funds are going to聽聽
[534]
be packed so if I invest in some large cap fund in聽 some blue chip fund I do not know which blue chip聽聽
[539]
I do n0t know which large cap I do not know when聽 the investment manager when I do not know when聽聽
[543]
the fund manager basically is going to shuffle the聽 stocks but here I know it's one of your only nifty聽聽
[548]
stocks so can I say transparency is also one of聽 the biggest advantages? Answer is absolutely Yess.聽
[556]
Now you might have understood that ETF look really聽 good look pretty attractive then has ETF grown聽聽
[564]
very nicely in the past few 10 years or聽 not? For that just have a look at this chart聽聽
[568]
ETFs have grown at a cage year of 70 percent in聽 last 10 years that's that's a mind-blowing growth聽聽
[574]
now what could have been the possible key drivers?聽 Number one EPF which is the employers Provident聽聽
[580]
Fund organization they have started investing聽 in nifty ETF's and through and other ETF's.聽聽
[585]
Number two even our government has done a lot of聽 divestment through ETF's like Bharat Bond ETF's聽聽
[591]
and in fact if you are aware of this they have聽 done multiple series of Bharat Bond. so more聽聽
[596]
and more et more and more exposure more and more聽 people are going to invest in ETF's and more and聽聽
[601]
more investment in ETF's this graph is going to聽 go higher and higher right. The second one which聽聽
[606]
I would like to also show you the second graph聽 talks about percentage of ETF AUM to the equity聽聽
[612]
AOM so in simple words if people are investing聽 in equity mutual funds versus people investing in聽聽
[619]
ETF's okay so assume that out of hundred which is聽 the total equity AUM out of hundred just barely聽聽
[627]
one percent was being invested in equity a AUM in聽 ETF way back in 2009 and if you now check in 2019聽聽
[637]
roughly this number is touching 12 percent so out聽 of the total equity AUM 12 goes to ETF AUM. I hope聽聽
[646]
you are understanding that the ETF percentage聽 is going up and up as the years are passing by.聽
[655]
Let's move on and try and understand that assume聽 that I am investing in bank nifty one of the most聽聽
[660]
famous in front of space bank nifty versus if I聽 invest in bank nifty but through bank bee's okay聽聽
[667]
in that case will my returns be exactly same do聽 you think so how do you feel that the nifty bee's聽聽
[673]
might give a little bit less returns as compared聽 to the nifty returns nifty bank nifty returns聽聽
[678]
the second answer is correct your nifty bank nifty聽 bee's will be giving you a little bit less returns聽聽
[685]
as compared to your bank nifty why because certain聽 expenses are involved here don't you think that聽聽
[689]
there'll be some kind of management fee involved聽 and some other expenses also involved? The answer聽聽
[693]
is obviously yes well do we have any data to prove聽 this why not I am just comparing Nippon India聽聽
[698]
ETF bank bees with nifty bank TRI is total Return聽 Index. Well I have explained what is total return聽聽
[705]
index absolutely again in detail in my course on聽 Magic Of Mutual funds so if you want you can have聽聽
[710]
a look at that as well right so coming back to聽 the discussion if you check the one year return聽聽
[715]
for bang these it is minus 37 percent 37.52 I聽 am ignoring the decimal points but nifty bank is聽聽
[722]
minus 36 okay so nifty buy both are a negative but聽 at least nifty bank nifty is a little bit less in聽聽
[728]
negative if I compare three returns now bank nifty聽 is three point two three minus but Nippon India聽聽
[736]
bank bees are minus three point eight two so again聽 a little bit worse and if I talk about a five year聽聽
[741]
return which is a positive return bank nifty has聽 given one point six seven percent and here if I聽聽
[747]
talk about Nippon India bank bees is that it's聽 one point one two percent only so I hope we have聽聽
[751]
understood that everywhere the index is going聽 to perform a shade better than the index piece.聽聽
[759]
Now let's understand mutual funds or ETF's which聽 ones are better so what we have done is that this聽聽
[764]
is money control website and here we've just聽 tried to rearrange or arrange the returns data聽聽
[771]
in a descending manner in simple words the mutual聽 fund with the highest return is right there on聽聽
[776]
number one and the returns go on decreasing right聽 so for example you can see quant small cap fund聽聽
[782]
that is given like 75.17 percentage return in聽 one year this is like an exceptional return of聽聽
[788]
course but if you check from the highest one to聽 the lowest one which is DSP healthcare whatever聽聽
[793]
could fit in into the screen it's still 51.68聽 percent okay so mutual funds have performed pretty聽聽
[800]
well in the last one year okay these are somewhere聽 around top 10 mutual funds which have taken into聽聽
[805]
on the screen. Now let's compare top 10 ETFs again聽 descending order may you can see the returns on聽聽
[812]
the screen Motilal was one NASDAQ Hundred, ETF聽 has given the best returns 37.37 percent and聽聽
[819]
the last one being ICICI prove mid cap select聽 ETF which is 26.10 what is this what does this聽聽
[826]
mean it means that if I am talking about top 10聽 returns for mutual funds versus top 10 ETF returns聽聽
[833]
mutual funds have outperformed ETF's recently you聽 might have heard about Mr. Warren Buffet saying聽聽
[837]
that ETFs are way better than mutual funds i feel聽 he is not wrong but in the US context where the聽聽
[844]
markets are absolutely mature in India where it's聽 it's a maturing market it's a developing market聽聽
[850]
in India still fund managers do have a lot聽 of scope to find out the gems and jewels聽聽
[854]
which can give you better performance as compared聽 to the index as well so if you want to generate聽聽
[859]
that higher that higher return Dil mange more聽 category then mutual funds may give you better聽聽
[866]
returns but yes if you're talking about a聽 kind of safety then ETF's can be better.聽
[874]
Well if you want to know how to buy these聽 it's as simple as buying any stock so you聽聽
[879]
go to your portal just search for nifty bees聽 or any other bees whatever you want to buy聽聽
[885]
place how much quantity you want to buy,聽 place at what price you want to buy and聽聽
[890]
it's as good as like you take a delivery of聽 your stocks you can take even delivery of聽聽
[895]
bees so it will be as good as buying and so if聽 you are buying nifty bees it's as good as taking聽聽
[900]
a position taking a delivery of nifty bees taking聽 a position of nifty without going into the f end聽聽
[907]
of space but if you want to buy nifty bees on聽 the exchange of course you need to have a Demat聽聽
[912]
account and if you don't have a demand account聽 of course link is there in the description box.聽
[919]
Now if you want to understand the taxation aspect聽 of bees then just it's as simple as this if I am聽聽
[924]
talking about a gold ETF or a bond ETF they are聽 taxed same like a debt mutual fund you can just聽聽
[930]
check out what are the rates for short term聽 for long term in one index session benefits聽聽
[933]
also apply okay and if I am talking about nifty聽 bee's the nifty b's are taxed like equity mutual聽聽
[940]
funds again you can check what is the scenario for聽 long term and what is the scenario for short term.聽
[947]
Well this last part is a little bit tricky if you聽 can understand it fantastic okay let's take this聽聽
[952]
example assume I have nifty bee's in my portfolio聽 and these nifty b's have already given me a 15%聽聽
[958]
return okay now what I feel that market might聽 crash how will I protect my position how will my聽聽
[965]
how will I hedge my position is there聽 any perfect hedge for my nifty bee's?聽聽
[969]
Answer is Yes. What I can write a call which聽 called nifty obviously possibility number two聽聽
[976]
I can short the futures which futures nifty聽 futures correct so even if market falls my bees聽聽
[984]
returns will fall a little bit but the position聽 the derivative hedge which I have taken聽聽
[989]
that will give me good returns and all聽 in all my profits will be protected聽聽
[993]
right can I do the same thing for mutual funds聽 can I get an exact hedge? Answer is No. If I聽聽
[999]
have a mutual fund portfolio let's say it's a聽 balanced fund do i have an exact hedge for that聽聽
[1005]
answer is no I don't have an exact edge for聽 it okay so i hope you might have understood聽聽
[1010]
this last part of the video a little bit advanced聽 it was but if you have fantastic if you haven't聽聽
[1014]
it's okay try and read more about hedging and聽 then you might be able to understand this.聽
[1021]
well I hope you have enjoyed this amazing聽 knowledge packed session on bees if you have聽聽
[1028]
don't forget to share this video with your friends聽 till then take care, Jai Hind and bye, bye.
