shopping for different medicare

supplement plans

now you may be turning 65 and brand new

to medicare or maybe you worked a few

years

past the age of 65 and are now retiring

or you're trying
[17]
to help out a friend or a relative
[18]
whatever the reason i'm here to help you

i know there are a lot of choices out
[22]
there in this video i will want you to
[24]
know

how we shop for the different plans and
[27]
the technology tools that we use to do
[29]
this i'm also going to show you
[31]
how there are other factors and this is
[33]
important
[34]
that you need to be looking at that are
[36]
other than price before i go on it would
[38]

what you probably already know

one of the things you're probably
[58]
looking at are what the different plans
[60]
cover
[61]
you have your plan f plan g plan n
[64]
high deductible plan f high deductible
[66]
plan g plans k and l and so on
[69]
some of the plans have deductibles some
[71]
have co-pays
[72]
but all of the benefits from all the
[75]
plans they're very different
[77]
it is these differences that we discuss
[79]
when we are looking to help our
[80]
customers
[81]
in finding the exact right plan that
[84]
satisfies their needs the best
[86]
this customization it's very important
[90]
for example we routinely have husbands
[92]
and wives on different plans and
[93]
companies
[94]
why the reason we put them on different
[96]
plans is quite simply
[98]
their needs are different you don't want
[100]
to get a plan just because that is what
[102]
your neighbor got
[103]
you want a plan that fits your specific
[106]
needs
[107]
whether we're talking about plan f plan
[109]
g plan
[110]
n i'm sure you've seen in your research
[112]
that each company must have
[114]
the same benefits so the benefit
[116]
structure is the same
[117]
with each company the only difference
[119]
between the companies is
[120]
price but there are a few factors that
[123]
really
[124]
go into this price when we help you we
[126]
don't just look at the initial price the
[128]
companies are offering we are also
[130]
looking at
[131]
what is the rate increase history of the
[133]
company some companies are notorious and
[135]
i'm not going to mention them by name
[137]
here
[137]
but they like to come in with a very low
[139]
initial offering and then raise your
[142]
rate substantially
[143]
you don't want to be taken by that you
[145]
need to know how the company you are
[146]
looking at has increased their premium
[148]
over time
[149]
whether it is the plan g with company a
[152]
or plan n with company b
[154]
we can find out how quickly they go up
[157]
when you are researching you may hear
[159]
that company a is a great company or
[160]
company b is a great company and you
[162]
decide
[162]
to go ahead and get this company only to
[165]
find out later that their rates are
[167]
a lot higher than other companies or
[169]
their rates increase a lot faster than
[171]
other companies
[172]
now i'm going to tell you a little
[173]
secret about medicare supplement
[175]
companies
[176]
they have nothing to do with the
[178]
decisions that are made with your health
[180]
care
[181]
we are so used to looking at our
[183]
insurance companies as the gatekeepers
[185]
of our healthcare
[186]
where they make all the decision well
[188]
with medicare supplements
[190]
the medicare supplement doesn't have any
[192]
say whatsoever on what procedures are
[194]
done
[194]
what doctors you see nothing when you
[196]
have original medicare
[198]
medicare controls all of that your
[200]
medicare supplement company is
[201]
there to follow medicare and simply pay
[204]
the deductibles co-pays co-insurance etc
[206]
that medicare has already paid a
[208]
majority of the bill for
[210]
a quick example and i'll get off my soap
[213]
box and then i'll move on
[214]
there are many agents and usually they
[216]
are captive meaning they are employed by
[219]
the insurance company
[220]
they will tell clients that their
[222]
company is the best because they approve
[224]
the most procedures and they approve
[226]
them fast
[227]
and they pay more claims than anyone
[229]
else medicare supplements
[232]
they have nothing to do with this when a
[234]
doctor orders a test or a procedure
[237]
they're not informing the medicare
[238]
supplement company and asking permission
[240]
or asking
[241]
if they will pay the claim the doctor is
[243]
informing medicare medicare decides what
[245]
is covered and what procedures are
[247]
covered not the medicare supplement
[248]
company
[249]
the medicare supplement is literally
[252]
just along for the ride
[254]
if you get a chemotherapy treatment and
[255]
that is approved by medicare and the
[257]
negotiated bill is five thousand dollars
[259]
and i'm just making up a number here
[261]
medicare is going to pay 80 of that
[263]
claim and if you have a medicare
[264]
supplement where it pays the other 20
[266]
the medicare supplement is going to pay
[268]
that 20 percent
[270]
the medicare supplement company can't
[272]
say no doesn't matter what company you
[274]
have
[275]
because the claim is medicare approved
[277]
the supplement company
[279]
must pay so don't let someone bamboozle
[281]
you into thinking that the medicare
[282]
supplement company you pick
[284]
makes any decisions on what tests
[286]
procedures etc
[288]
that are performed and covered that is
[290]
all controlled by medicare
[292]
i apologize for going off on that little
[294]
tangent if that made sense
[296]

getting back to the prices some
[302]
companies start out low
[304]
and they go up fast we try to avoid
[305]
those some companies actually start high
[308]
and go up fast those are usually the
[310]
companies that are trying to convince
[312]
you that their medicare supplement is
[314]
superior
[314]
because they approve the most procedures
[317]
then there are the companies that
[319]
start low but usually not the lowest but
[322]
near the lowest
[323]
and they go up slow this is generally
[325]
what we're looking for
[326]
generally we are looking for a name
[328]
brand company
[329]
a good company with a high financial
[331]
rating with am best
[332]
the company we are looking for has the
[334]
ability to keep their rates as stable as
[337]
possible
[338]
over time i understand you may be
[339]
thinking that this is a lot of
[341]
information this is a lot of info for me
[343]
to wrap my head around
[344]
it's a lot of info for me to figure out
[346]
i mean how am i going to figure all this
[348]
out
[349]
at this point i have to tell you if you
[351]
haven't considered using a broker
[352]
this might be a good reason for you to
[354]
do that and don't just pick anyone
[356]
make sure the broker you pick has the
[358]
tools needed for the job
[360]
you don't want a broker that is going to
[361]
provide you a plan that is going to pay
[364]
them the most or give them a bonus
[366]
not the plan that is easiest to sell not
[369]
the cheapest plan
[371]
what you want is the plan that is going
[374]
to be the long-term solution
[376]
for your medicare needs before i show
[378]
you how we get all of our data i want to
[380]
take a moment to demonstrate what it's
[381]
like using an independent agent
[383]
versus a captive agent that comes to
[385]
your home or the type of agent that
[387]
works directly at an
[388]
insurance company so i went out to
[391]
walmart and got this highly
[392]
sophisticated demonstration kit i tried
[394]
to get that kit remember when we were
[396]
kids
[397]
it had the wooden blocks the circle the
[399]
square the star and you put those in
[401]
there i couldn't find one of those
[402]
but i found this and quite frankly it
[404]
probably
[406]
goes ahead and is a better example than
[408]
what i was thinking of getting but
[409]
obviously this is the alphabet
[410]
these these literally can represent the
[413]
different plans and different companies
[415]
that you can get and with an with a
[418]
captive agent that only represents one
[421]
company
[422]
you only have access to a few of their
[424]
plans you know maybe four of them up
[425]
here
[426]
all right and the same thing is when you
[429]
are calling an insurance company
[431]
directly they can only talk about
[433]
their plans and their prices they can't
[435]
compare the prices from the other
[436]
companies
[437]
as well so they only got access to a
[439]
little bit and you're you're literally a
[441]
letter we'll just pick one up here
[443]
let's see we got the letter looks like
[445]
the letter c and anyway if you're
[447]
talking to one of these guys
[448]
all right and you're a c which means
[450]
your needs are the letter c
[452]
and you're looking at you're talking to
[455]
a captive agent and they're representing
[456]
these plans through here whatever this
[458]
is afl
[459]
you don't fit in there and they
[461]
literally try to fit you in there so
[462]
what they do
[463]
is they try to sell you and convince you
[466]
remember how i was telling you how they
[468]
try to convince you their plan is better
[469]
than everybody else if they have more
[471]
procedures that they pay for
[473]
so they're trying to convince you and
[474]
sell you not paying attention so much to
[476]
your needs
[477]
right and you don't fit into any of
[479]
these all right same thing happens when
[481]
you call the insurance company directly
[483]
you know you maybe you're a letter
[485]
you're a letter v
[486]
okay you're a v and you're talking to
[488]
the insurance company and
[490]
they really represent plans and prices
[492]
that are good for abs and people are avs
[495]
and c's but you're a v and you don't fit
[496]
in there
[497]
okay you don't fit into any of these
[499]
plans but with an independent agent and
[501]
someone like myself
[503]
i don't have to worry about the benefits
[505]
and everything in the plan first what i
[506]
do
[507]
is i talk to you we have a pleasant
[508]
conversation i want to know what your
[510]
needs are
[511]
all right do you do you see a lot of
[513]
different doctors do you go to the
[514]
doctor a lot maybe you only go to the
[516]
doctor once a year that's gonna start
[517]
telling us what your needs are
[519]
and it's going to start i'm not going to
[520]
look at the letter all right i'm not
[521]
looking at the letter
[522]
here we go didn't look at the letter i
[524]
don't know what i've picked up
[525]
but as we talk it develops
[529]
into which letter that you are there are
[531]
some people they say i see lots of
[532]
doctors chris
[534]
i need a lot of freedom to go see any
[535]
doctor that i want okay
[537]
we file that back we know we're probably
[538]
going to need that type of plan all
[540]
right talk to somebody i go tell me
[541]
about your current insurance and they
[542]
say i have an hmo plan right now really
[545]
if you like that hmo they go chris it's
[546]
a great price and
[548]
all the doctors are in my network and i
[550]
know how to use it so
[551]
the hmo plan is isn't bad for me not
[554]
okay great then i know you might be an
[555]
hmo
[556]
type of person you might be a ppo type
[558]
of person you might not want any
[560]
restrictions whatsoever maybe you want
[562]
something that has
[563]
you know a higher deductible that has
[565]
some co-pays built into it so you have a
[567]
lower premium
[568]
maybe you want something as a low
[570]
deductible with no co-payments in there
[572]
but you have a higher premium of that so
[574]
each person is a different letter and i
[576]
still don't know what the letter this is
[577]
but it doesn't matter
[579]
because that's what my goal is to find
[581]
out which piece of the puzzle you are
[584]
unlike the independent or excuse me
[585]
unlike the captives and the insurance
[587]
companies
[588]
what's important to them is their plan
[590]
and telling you how
[591]
great their plan is and trying to fit
[593]
you into that plan
[595]
i do the opposite here's the letter this
[598]
is who you are we figured it out you're
[599]
the letter
[601]
it's the letter u i don't know if you
[602]
can see that or not but you're
[604]
the letter u i go right here to the
[606]
board i have all these insurance
[607]
companies plans oh your letter u
[609]
i know which company is for the letter u
[611]
and we find that
[614]
and you fit right in there that's what i
[617]
do we customize what your needs are
[620]
and then we find excuse me we don't
[622]
customize your needs we find out exactly
[625]
what your needs are and then we're able
[626]
to find you the exact
[628]
right plan for your needs we don't need
[631]
to try to fit you
[633]
into some other company and there's some
[635]
independent agents out there that
[636]
actually do this
[636]
you're you but they'll try to fit you in
[639]
the ass because they're getting paid
[640]
bonuses or they take them on a great
[641]
trip or whatever

effective date and then if there will

give a household

discount too if they apply we know all

the companies that give the household

discounts

and don't some give you a discount just
[719]
for living with another individual

some two people have to have the um have

to have the

the product in order to get the discount
[726]
but take a look at this this is going to

show us all the plan g rates from all
[730]
the companies
[732]
here are the different companies that
[733]
are available for the plan g we're using

sacramento

as our example only because it's the
[739]
capital california

65 year old female remember the rates in
[743]
california for male and female
[745]
the same non-tobacco plan g with an
[747]
effective date of october first

and here are the companies and their
[751]
prices and this

what we have here is our quote engine

and it tells us

that their ratings their financial
[758]
ratings tells us how long they've been
[761]
in the market
[762]
and obviously it tells us the company
[763]
names and the prices

this is how we're able to search for

everything for you so quickly and get

all of this information

one thing i want to show you as we

scroll down here here's blue shield of

california this is their plan g

extra some of these plans these medicare
[778]
supplement plans and this is one they
[779]
actually have vision
[780]
hearing coverage gym membership some of
[782]
the plans have gym memberships in them
[784]
but this has some extra benefits that
[785]
the others don't mainly the one that
[788]
really sets it apart is hearing aid
[789]
coverage
[790]
if you have hearing aids all right and
[792]
you're talking to
[793]
one of these captive agents or an
[795]
insurance company directly
[797]
and they're not gonna they're not going
[799]
to ask you about hearing aids because
[800]
it's not a basic benefit of medicare
[801]
supplements
[802]
but me when we talk about everything you
[805]
know i ask you to use hearing aids or
[807]
anything like that you say yeah chris i
[808]
have hearing aids and
[809]
well we may want to we might want to
[811]
look at a program
[813]
that covers hearing aids and there's not
[814]
a lot of them out there and it's not
[815]
available in every state
[817]
but that's how we're able to listen to
[819]
exactly what your needs are

and i get to figure out what letter you
[822]
are in that board that i showed you
[824]
earlier
[824]
and fit you right in there if you talk
[827]
to a captive agent
[829]
all right or you call one of the

insurance companies directly

they're not going to be able to fit you

in that board very well like an

independent agent like myself can

bottom here's many many different

about 25 of these companies anyway and

a good idea how the rates are going to

as you get older we see here anthem has

cigna has this rate united healthcare

and you just come on down here

and we'll look at that blue shield extra

where'd it go here it is here's their

extra and it's you know getting a little

bit more expensive as you hit age 70. so

might not be worth it for the hearing

aids if you get older these are all the

things that we're able to look at with

our tools and our technology

and you come all the way back down here

to the bottom again same

that we probably haven't heard of

all right only a couple of years in the

market that's going to re you know it's

going to bring up a flag to us

how how we don't have any inkling we

don't know what their rate increases are

going to be because they've only been in

the

market a couple of years we know these

big companies have been around for a
[988]
while

they usually have pretty stable rates

and

just like when we're looking at the

other one we can scroll on down we can

see all of the companies

this is with the household discounts and

we'll go all the way to the bottom here

you know you're looking at this company

down here at the bottom for 230

a month for like i said the exact same

thing that these guys are

doing it for 94 dollars a month no

difference

and if we again we can look at the age

70 here for female just to get a

snapshot of

what things might look like in the

future

and here we are here are the rates for

an age 70 humana happens to have a

lower price with the household discount

but again this company here

they're right in there they're just a

couple of dollars more so they're

they're going up they're low and they

stay low which is what we're trying to

companies that we are trying to find and

and we want to look at those prices very

cigna does as well but this is like i

was saying this is how we're able to

compare everything for you so quickly

with the exact
