[14]

[16]

[18]
investment banking
[19]
and i invited a special guest through
[20]
this channel to help me cover this topic
[22]
it is afzai afzal is a former goldman
[25]
sachs consultant he will help you
[27]
understand what investment banking is
[29]
all about
[30]
we will discuss the key divisions in
[32]
investment banking and also some tips
[34]
what you can do to get into a job
[36]
like goldman sachs or other budget
[38]
bracket banks this way
[39]
after there's a youtube channel called
[41]
afsalhusain i will link it below in the
[43]
video description he makes lots of great
[45]
videos on investment banking and related
[47]
topics i can really recommend you to
[49]
check it out
[50]
but now without further ado let's jump
[52]
in let's learn what working at
[54]
investment banks like goldman sachs
[56]
looks like and what you can do to get
[58]
such a job this way
[59]
hey thank you for tuning in today my
[62]
name is afsal hussein
[63]
and i run a youtube channel called afzal
[66]
hussein
[66]
heinrich will link it in the video
[68]
description below long story short i
[70]
graduated six seven years ago now i went
[72]
to a mid-tier university queen mary in
[75]
london and i studied economics and
[76]
finance
[77]
my goal at uni was to do as many spring
[79]
weeks and internships as possible got my
[81]
internship at goldman sachs within their
[83]
asset management business i did that for
[85]
10 weeks and converted that into a
[86]
full-time offer after i graduated i
[88]
joined goldman's full-time in the asset
[90]
management business as a salesperson
[92]
and i did that for a few years until i
[94]
left to pursue entrepreneurship
[95]
full-time but i don't want to waste too
[96]
much time i want to get straight to
[98]
the value that i can add for you and
[100]
what i want to do in this video is
[102]
explain to you a bit about the
[103]
investment banking division at an
[105]
investment bank the sales and trading
[106]
division at an investment bank and
[108]
asset management and private banking
[110]
because these are the four
[112]
or four of the front office divisions at
[114]
an investment bank so you've got the
[115]
front office
[116]
which are revenue generating higher
[118]
salaries higher bonuses
[120]
client facing and then you've got the
[121]
back office things like human resources
[124]
finance operations so on and so forth
[126]
why i want to focus on the front office
[128]
areas for you today is because i get a
[130]
lot of management consultants a lot of
[132]
consulting interns graduates etc who
[134]
reach out to me
[135]
and ask me how can they break into
[138]
investment banking or how can they break
[140]
into asset management and so i'll touch
[142]
on all of these and then i'll touch on
[143]
some of the similarities in the skill
[145]
sets that you guys will have as
[147]
individuals with a consulting background
[149]
or experience in the world of consulting
[151]
and then i'll touch on some of the
[152]
differences between consulting and
[154]
working for an investment bank so that
[155]
you
[156]
can kind of focus on the key gaps that
[158]
you need to fill
[159]
if you're ever interested in breaking in
[161]
without any further ado let's get
[162]
straight into it the investment banking
[164]
division is basically corporate advisory
[166]
what individuals do in the investment
[167]
banking division is help companies raise
[169]
money
[170]
whether it's through equity issuing
[172]
equity or issuing debt
[174]
they help companies restructure their
[175]
business so they look at the company's
[177]
equity to debt ratio and assess
[179]
if a company can be organized in a
[181]
better way in order to
[182]
function more efficiently and increase
[185]
shareholder value
[186]
and they help companies merge or take
[188]
over so corporate advisory in essence
[190]
focuses on all of these areas when you
[192]
go into the investment banking division
[194]
as a junior
[195]
you are going to be heavily focused on
[197]
building models financial models and
[199]
valuation models on excel and working on
[201]
presentation skills on
[202]
microsoft powerpoint these are the two
[205]
tools that you're going to be using
[206]
for the most part in your first few
[208]
years in the investment banking division
[210]
and so naturally you bring a lot of that
[211]
over from management consulting
[213]
to investment banking because you do a
[215]
lot of that in the world of consulting
[217]
anyways the hours in the investment
[218]
banking division
[219]
are the longest in the industry you
[221]
would get in at like 9 a.m
[223]
and then you would leave in your first
[224]
few years midnight 1am 2am it's very
[228]
very long but as a result you get
[230]
compensated with large bonuses
[231]
at the end of the year and so if that's
[233]
something you're interested in it's
[234]
something worth looking at i've done
[236]
quite a few videos on the work life
[237]
balance salaries all of that those on my
[240]
channel you can check those out in your
[241]
spare time
[242]
then we've got the sales and trading
[243]
division this is the
[245]
market aspect or area of the investment
[248]
bank this is where you see traders on
[250]
the trading floor
[251]
glued into the financial markets they
[253]
are basically creating markets for
[255]
clients who want to buy or sell
[256]
financial securities and connecting them
[258]
with other clients
[259]
or individuals who want to buy and sell
[262]
financial securities the traders are on
[263]
the trading floor their sales people on
[265]
the trading floor
[266]
there's researchers on the trading floor
[268]
all of these people are coming up with
[269]
ideas
[270]
executing ideas in order to make a small
[272]
commission
[273]
of the large sums of money that the
[275]
clients are trading so
[276]
if you're interested in getting stuck
[278]
into the financial markets whether that
[280]
be
[280]
as a salesperson or a trader then this
[282]
might be something that you're
[284]
interested in typically you would get in
[285]
really early before the markets open so
[287]
six or seven am and then you would leave
[289]
at like five six seven pm and then
[290]
you've got
[291]
asset management and private banking
[293]
these areas basically
[294]
manage money over a long-term horizon
[296]
for their clients the key difference is
[298]
in private banking or private wealth
[300]
management
[301]
your clients are high net worth
[303]
individuals so rich people celebrities
[305]
footballers etc
[306]
and then in asset management your
[308]
clients are government organizations
[310]
local authorities
[310]
insurance companies pension schemes
[312]
sovereign wealth funds etc etc so
[315]
large corporations versus individuals
[317]
and family offices in asset management
[319]
and private banking you can be a
[320]
salesperson where you're managing client
[322]
relationships or you can be a product
[323]
person an investment professional
[325]
getting the money in and investing it
[326]
into the financial markets there are a
[328]
lot of people who come from management
[329]
consulting that break into asset
[331]
management or investment banking as
[332]
salespeople for example because they
[334]
have those
[335]
qualities that allow them to build
[337]
client relationships they have
[338]
interpersonal skills they're good
[339]
communicators they're good team workers
[341]
so on and so forth
[342]
key skills that are very similar
[343]
powerpoint presentation you use
[345]
a lot in consulting you use a lot in
[347]
banking why because
[349]
a lot of the work that a bank does or a
[351]
consulting firm does is pitch to clients
[353]
on powerpoint if you are
[355]
very good at microsoft powerpoint you
[357]
will be able to work faster more
[359]
efficiently
[359]
and just impress your seniors a lot
[361]
easier and so that's one key similarity
[363]
between the two industries another one
[365]
is excel
[366]
i'm not too sure how much you guys use
[367]
excel in management consulting i'm sure
[369]
you use it quite a bit but it's heavily
[371]
used
[371]
in investment banking division and on
[373]
the trading floor and so if you are good
[375]
on excel then that would be a bonus in
[377]
both worlds you
[378]
go and manage client relationships you
[380]
are pitching your ideas and solutions to
[382]
the clients
[383]
and you're trying to help them right and
[384]
then in the process you take a fee
[386]
for that service however if you want to
[388]
move from management consulting to
[390]
investment banking specifically it's
[392]
important to understand that in
[393]
investment banking you need a good
[395]
understanding
[396]
of accounting principles you need to be
[398]
able to
[399]
look into the inner workings of a
[401]
company by reading its financial
[403]
statements
[404]
and have an understanding of what it all
[406]
means that's what the investment bank
[407]
does
[408]
it takes all of that information puts it
[409]
into the excel models and then it
[411]
predicts or estimates the future
[413]
performance of that company in different
[415]
scenarios in management consulting i'm
[416]
not sure how much of that you do but if
[418]
you're considering breaking into banking
[420]
it's always good to have
[421]
some background knowledge in accounting
[423]
principles and financial statement
[424]
analysis if you want to make the
[426]
transition from management consulting to
[428]
banking
[428]
whether it's in asset management sales
[430]
and trading private banking or the
[431]
investment banking division
[432]
my advice to you three quick tips make
[434]
sure your cover letter is strong make
[436]
sure your cv is strong make sure you
[438]
network
[438]
talk to people in these industries
[440]
whether it's through linkedin or simply
[442]
whatever it is make sure you talk to
[444]
them
[444]
network ask them questions because
[446]
you'll be surprised how much you can
[447]
learn from connecting with people in the
[449]
industry they will help you get further
[451]
than just trying to make the transition
[453]
on your own without reaching out to
[454]
people or connecting with people
[456]
